Default Bugeye115's 2004 WRX Track Build

Greetings! I recently picked up a 2004 WRX from a local owner here in Oklahoma. I'm going to use this thread to track my progress and to keep you entertained.

A little history before we get started. My first car was a 1984 Subaru BRAT in yellow with turbo decals from the factory. I drove that car for about a year before the camshaft snapped at the distributor. I went on to pick up a 2011 SWP WRX that year. I ended up upgrading everything except the turbo and internals. Water methanol was the poison of choice.

I went on to sell the WRX in 2016 and picked up my current daily, a 2014 Lexus IS350 F-Sport.

Fast forward to the present day, and I now own a 04 WRX. My main goal is to turn this into a fun weekend track car.

The car is actually in pretty good shape physically, and I drove it home 2.5 hrs from the seller's house. The clutch was slipping, but other than that, no issues.

I decided to pull the engine this past week to change the clutch and tackle any leaks that are present. The previous owner had installed an eBay clutch...

Engine removal went smoothly, and I could tell this engine had been out before. The only issue I ran into was some stripped engine mount bolts. Simple drill bit did the job.

Some advice if the car is going to be a pure track toy since you have a reliable daily already.

Go to a 6mt and 5x114 as soon as possible

If you are buying brakes get Stoptech / AP racing , they will pay for themselves in a few years of track use. Brembo 1001 pads are insanely expensive in good track compounds.

If you are shopping Fortune 500 give Dewey at Six Star Motorsports a call and tell him I sent you. He setup a bunch of class winning subarus in the Gridlife time attack series.

Other than that just have fun and enjoy yourself , you will meet a lot of really cool people.

I appreciate the advice. I have been doing some research on the 6-speed swap and I've seen a lot of transmissions pop up lately. I actually already have a set of Brembo's off an STi that I purchased a while back, couldn't pass up the price.

I'll make sure to do that when I order the coil overs.

Thanks again!

Update #3

Yesterday I was able to replace the front inner CV boots. They had literally leaked grease everywhere so most of the day was spent cleaning the engine bay.

I wasn't experiencing any issues with the CV axles themselves, so hopefully, this is all I'll need to do.

I should be able to start putting the engine back together this week. I'm waiting on a few more gaskets and hoses.

Update #4

Today I refreshed a few parts with some paint. I threw a new coat of black paint on the oil pan.

I didn't want to leave the TGV's bare so I decided to paint them black. I think it will compliment the red intake.

heart of a lion poem

I painted the intake with VHT SP204 Wrinkle Plus. I applied the paint in different steps, each time spraying at a different angle. I wouldn't say it's "wrinkled" but I'm happy with it. The right side runner did start to develop some fuzz... does anyone know why that happened?

free photo upload

Lastly, I cleaned up the oil cooler. The previous owner had let the oil pan and valve covers leak for too long. Oil was all over the bottom of the engine.

I'm still waiting on the OEM 10mm oil pump I ordered. Once that is in I can assemble the front of the engine. Should have this thing back in the car in no time.

Update #5

So I found out the KillerB oil pick up for the EJ20 will not work with the taller STi oil baffle. I would have to purchase the lower-profile KillerB Oil baffle if I wanted to make it all work. I've decided to stick with the stock oil baffle and KillerB pick up for now.

Oil pan, oil cooler, and exhaust manifold installed. Time to move on to the valve covers and intake.

Update #6

I spent yesterday cleaning out the back seat and trunk/spare tire area. There is some surface rust down there, but nothing to be worried about.

I also Installed the Deatchwerks DW200 fuel pump. Very easy Install.

The new OEM flywheel also came in.

I'm still waiting on my OEM oil pump.... apparently it's on back order from Subaru... its the only thing holding my engine build back..

Update #7

I made a lot of progress yesterday. Intake, STi injectors, Tomei Inlet, Invidia catless up-pipe, and VF29 installed.

I'm super psyched to get to this point. The 11mm oil pump will be in this Monday. I should have the front of the engine all back together this week and back in the car next weekend!

Update #8

Engine is back in the car! It's been fun working on the engine but knowing that I'll be able to drive her soon is a great feeling.

New OEM flywheel and SPEC Stage 2+ clutch installed. Took my time to make sure I did it right. I've never done a clutch install so it was kind of nerve racking...

I've been slowly connecting sensors and installing new O2 sensors. I replaced the 16 year old factory fuel lines and fuel filter. I've just been taking my time to make sure everything is done correctly.

Power upgrades but not upgrading the internals = no bueno. Most important things for racing track in order are 1. tires 2. suspension 3. aero 4. power upgrades. Don't join the blown engine club, spend the money upgrading the internals or you'll be spending for them later anyways.

One step at a time my friend. I can still enjoy a nice track day with the current EJ20 and modifications. I'm not going for big HP, just a little extra power. Suspension and tires are coming soon.

Last minute parts order! The OEM radiator that I have has to be the original. It doesn't leak, but I thought it would be a good idea to go ahead and upgrade. The weight difference is insane!

I need a little advice. I originally planned to purchase a set of Fortune Auto coilovers for the WRX. However, I've discovered a set of Cusco Coilovers on Ebay.
No model number, but it seems like a good price to me. Thoughts??
