Default '98 RS is a total loss from hail - now in the market for a WRX, looking for advice

Progressive says repairs are almost double what it's worth! I will get a check for more than I expected, and I think it's time to upgrade.

I can probably afford a '06-'08, probably no more than $16K. I would LOVE another WRB car, but I'm open to dark grey too. Manual trans is a must. No wagons, but I could do the sedan or the 5D hatch.

So, questions:

-- any years/features to absolutely avoid?
-- any years/features specifically desirable?
-- anyone know of anything on a lot somewhere I can see in person? I've been checking online, but I know how the dealers take photos to show the cars in their best light!
-- anything specific to check for mechanically? I've never owned a turbo car, and the WRX has a rep for being used and abused.

I'm in Reading, PA, willing to go maybe 200-250 miles for the right car. I'm on vacation next week, so I could do my driving research then.

I'm heading into work shortly. Hopefully I have a ton of answers and advice when I check back in tomorrow!!!

Mods, if this post is completely against rules or anything, please pull it, and accept my apologies in advance.

Thanks all!

One more thing. Can I cross-post this into the MAIC forum, or is that a no-no?
