Default Experience with Ground Control Coils?

I know a guy at Ground Control that hooked me up with a set of there new coils fot the STI. I am putting them on a stock 04 STI, and I was just wondering is anyone else running on them or am I the guinnee pig?

Is it their coilover conversion kit, or direct replacement springs?

It's the coil conversion kit.

A few vendor sites are saying that some grinding might be necessary to fit the conversion kit to the stock wrx or sti shock. Im interested in whether that is the case...

They've been available for a while and many people here have installed them. I plan on doing the install tomorrow.

While on the topic, do the Ground Control kits usually come with a wrench for the spring perch? I'm not seeing one. =)

So far not enjoying GC; checked all of the bolts 3 times, duct-taped between the strut & threaded collar, but am having rather significant "thunking" over decent-sized bumps.

What a dumbass... tightening the top strut bolt some more seems to have done the trick. =) Now to continue working in this Seattle mini-monsoon...

FYI the Ground Controls are working fine. Makes me a little nervous having all that slack between the spring & strut top when the suspension isn't compressed, but still works okay. Also it saves roughly 20 pounds of unsprung weight.

The slack in the assembly won't be an issue. Remember, the stock inserts are designed for a much longer spring. Every conversion kit will have this issue unless you run shorter dampers or a tender assembly.

A spanner is only necessary for preloaded assemblies.

No grinding should be needed.

Yeah I noticed during the install that it's quite easy to adjust with your hands. A little bit of a pain doing the hex bolt with the stock perches still there since I didn't cut them off.

If the slack bothers you, you can get some tender springs from Ground Control for that. You'll also need the appropriate sized spring couplers.

Yes, tender springs can also make for a more comfortable ride.

Thanks, didn't know about those before but found this:

Looks like helper springs might be perfect.

yup and i would wager they sold you sprigns that are way too stiff too

GCs were a bad idea when they first came out with the subaru kit ~1999 and are still a bad idea

linear springs with stock struts is just not a good idea

Aren't the stock STi springs linear rate (224f/194r)?

Yeah, but they have a much higher dampening ability than the gc or wrx struts do, so it probably doesnt matter that much. I like linear springs for racing because I like a linear response in my steering inputs, but nonlinear springs are definitely more comfortable and streetable, especially on struts that dont have adjustable dampening.

Yes, we have the GC setup with helper springs on stock 05 STi struts. The struts are valved perfectly for the 325/300 spring rate and the helper springs prevent any spring slack.

They are "coilovers" which means adjustable sleeves. You can do whatever you want.
