Broke something installing Perrin Shift Stop and I'm fuming
I'm so pissed right now
So I'm installing the Perrin Shift Stop on my almost brand new 2018 WRX I do the main part, where you put the actual piece that says PERRIN on, without too much problem - great. So I move onto the part where you add the 2 little washers. As I start to unscrew the bolt for this step, I'm met with a LOT of resistance, but I continue and then I hear a SNAP. I look down and realize that the part that screw runs through snapped. See below pic for reference. Like I said, I'm so f'ing pissed off right now. I can only imagine this will cost a fortune to replace, and for all I know it wasn't even a problem to begin with - like installing those tiny little washers would have made like 0 noticeable difference. This may sound like a really stupid question, but is it OK to drive with this little thing broken? And does anyone know what part that is so I can try and get it replaced? Should I just take it into a Subaru dealer? Please help before I lose my GD mind over this little thing. Seriously - nothing infuriates me more than something that is SUPPOSED to be simple, and then turns into more of a problem.

so the flats on the bolt head are what lock it into place - looks like what happened is it wasn't coming loose, so it started turning in the "slot" the bolt head is in until it broke. If you can rotate it back, it should close up the crack. You could try removing the bolt, and fixing the crack - you could try removing the bolt and use an adhesive like JB weld to fix it, then bolt it together and hold the bolt head in place (I'd put a wrench around the region where the slot is to try to prevent it from opening up, then tighten it down)
Getting the bolt out now might be difficult - rotate it back so that you close the gap, then try using pliers or a box wrench to hold the part that captures the bolt head together. I'd hit the nut with a little penetrating oil, too. On the other hand, it looks to be so tight now, that the gap is gone (the point of using the washers) so maybe you can leave it be? Do you have the factory short shifter? If not, you can always find someone whom has upgraded and has their stock shifter that is willing to part with it... I can't imagine that having that piece cracked matters, as long as the bolt is secure... |

I do have a OEM short throw shifter installed (from the factory) - it seems like the damaged piece is part of the STS. That said I have been driving on it and it doesn't seem to have any effect whatsoever. I left the shifter hood off so I could see how it responds while driving, and it doesn't seem to have any role or response to the normal machinations of shifting or driving.

it looks like you should have just spun on the nut and slid the bolt out?
