Driving feel of Evo x vs Sti
Hey guys, I’m looking to upgrade from my 18 Wrx to either a 2011-2014 Evo or a 2019+ Sti over the summer. I’ve never driven an evo and was looking for the opinions of some of you that have driven both on which you like better. I’ve had the opportunity to drive a 2020 Sti and it felt good. Just curious on what yours guys takes on the Evo’s handling, drivability, etc.

The seats don’t adjust up or down and the steering wheel doesn’t either. Makes it hard to find a comfortable position. They are also super slim. But the biggest downside was the gearing ratio. At 65 mph it was at like 3200-3500 rpms and just loud and buzzy. But if you want to make easy power - great platform. |

my buddy who has an evo is super jealous of the STI, the primary maintenance is easier such as plugs...but the clutch is the worst thing I have ever done...poor design imo...

I don't personally have any experience with an EVO, but a subie guy I follow on you tube (smeedia) was looking to buy one for a project and found that they were quite expensive for how old they are. He wound up buying an 05 bug eye that turned into a bit of a money pit, but that's another story.
Just saying, unless you've found one, you might want to go look at prices. Might help negate the question. Cheers! |

It's been a while since I've driven an Evox, but I crossed shopped one with my STI. The Evo is a good car, and the one I'd get if I were building a track car, but it wasn't worth it as a daily.
Subaru may get bashed for its interiors, but the Evo feels like a 16 year old kid with dad's credit card decided to hop up a 1998 Hyundai. It's one of the chinciest interiors on any car made within the last 10 years. The seats are good though, but thigh bolsters are very high for getting in/out. Actual driving feel isn't THAT different from the STi. The evo very much has that old school rubber band turbo feel (as does the STI, but not the VA WRX). The EVO is a bit more neutral handling in stock form. Evo doesn't sound as good as the STI (if you like the UEL header and boxer sound like I do). |

Interesting to hear about the seats, every review I’m reading praises them. I’m pretty use to a high rpm cruising 5 spd like my old bugeye but I don’t dare to look at the 6spd auto evo’s lol |

Smeedia youtube channel is great, what shame all the issues he has run into with the STI he recently purchased. |

I literally bought it brand new and sold it three months later (the evo). The interior is laughable quality, the buzzes and rattles worse than my old WRX or STI, and the trunk space is worse than a small hatchback. Rear seats don’t fold down and there is no practicality. Also have fun if the previous owner didnt maintain the thing that controls the yaw control.

It’s not just the seats, it’s the combination of the seats and steering wheel. The huge lack of adjustability makes it hard to find a comfortable driving position unless you happen to be the perfect driver for that car.

I had a MR Touring. Interior was miles above my 02 WRX. Seats were great but not good for bigger people. Super fun to drive at speed, super loud and darty at highway speeds. Loved the transmission, engine, power, response (full boost at 2300rpm on stage two) and to this day it's the best AWD system I've ever driven. Amazing in any weather, best vehicle I've ever driven in snow. Phenomenal handling stock, even better with sway bars.
It was miles above my 02 WRX, but that's not really saying much. I ended up trading it in for the Audi, which is significantly quieter, comfortable, with adjustable suspension/gas pedal/steering wheel (all for response and comfort, the gas pedal does not move). So for highway cruising, my guess is the STI is better, just in steering if nothing else. Noise levels are probably similar. Seats are personal preference. Gas mileage is probably a toss up. Evo X probably handles better. Just drive both and see what you like more. |
