Hey i have been following this thread and others like it for some time now but have had trouble finding answers to the one question i keep asking myself. Is there any advantage of building a hybrid ej257/207 over building a full ej257? I figured the cost of building a 257 would be higher since the 2.5l may be more desirable amoungst tuners.
The reason i ask is because like most people on NASIOC i love my subi and plan on making it a track car when i graduate an Engineer. As of now i have an ej255 (same bottom end architecture as the ej257). Right now im looking for the most affordable and reliable head/block combo. My goal is to eventually make 475-525WHP using either a gt30 or gt35 to compete in regional autox and time attack events. |

The reason for this cost. If you have a popped 205 with good heads, the price of a new 2.5 shortblock is only marginally more than a 2.0. So this is a pretty cost effective upgrade

Thanks for the reply buddy, so basically its only worth doing a hybrid if you already have the 2.0 heads since going out and buying them would pretty much require spending the extra $400 to mimic the 2.5l chamber and thats not including a P&P or any other machine work that may be required... I was kinda hoping the 2.0L would be lighter or have better metallurgy but i guess thats where aftermarket support comes in ... |

I don't remember seeing it mentioned, but do you offer this for ej20g and ej20k heads? Also, is it detrimental to strength of the combustion chamber, will it weaken the areas around the valve seats or plug holes?

I love my hybrid set up, and a question I have is the pertaining to the scavenging ability of the 2.0L heads w/ported block matching the EJ257. The 2.0L cams seem like they won't do an adequate job of scavenging the exhaust gases from the combustion chamber. Leaving a lethal combination for those that start to run bigger turbo set ups. Some use a header set up allow more flow for this. However, I don't know if it's the correct logic, but on top of matching the heads relative B25 combustion chamber, wouldn't a set of cams and a good valve angle job to work in concert with the chamber being opened up be more beneficial for engine health/efficiency and ...well power too?

I'm running Sti cams in mine for that eaxact reason...they are designed to work with that cylinder head design. |

I thought so...I think that STi cams or something comparable should be the next project above anything else...if anything for longevity of the engine.
I realize what I asked should be common sense, but I see it overlooked 3 out of every 5 builds that I see. :/ |

There is no weakening with this program because we don't touch the area around the spark plug port and the valve seats. Most of the material that is taken off is on the outer edge of the chamber. Thanks -- Ed |

Do you guys also do a basic head rebuild with new guides, seals when you do this? I'm looking to ship my ej205 heads to you but the exhaust seals are on their way out.

We can use the same program on the EJ207 heads but it would open the bores up to match the 257. We don't have a program for the 22T.

I had this exact thing done to mine when I sent my heads out, but I don't want to advertise for an other vendor in EQ's thread, so I wont say where here. For all I know EQ can do this as well. all that needs to be done is the side widened a little and then blended back into the chamber, plus a little deshouding behind the valves doesn't hurt. My combustion chamber final size was on 51cc so I didn't loose much in my compression ratio either. |

Please feel free to tell him where he can get that done as we don't do anything for the 22T bore size.
Thanks -- Ed |

I had mine done at ASF Machine, and would recommend them to anyone. Joe is great to work with and really did a beautiful job, I regret not taking pics when I got the heads back from him.
Here is one of the heads after a quick tear down after a few hours of run time. Not shiny new, but I did give em a quick cleaning http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w...54858129_n.jpg you can also get an idea of what needs to be done in Fuji K's I want to build a 2.x engine |
