So last week I found out that my local hardware store carries Kabar knives. I had been eyeing the TDI series of knives for a while now. This is an old timey hardware store and they guy knows me pretty well so he cut me a deal for both of these:
The top is a Hinderer Hellfire, I like this one much better than the smaller one. They are a little Mall Ninja-ish but they were designed with a purpose and made in the USA. One thing I didn't know is that the TDI series of knives are designed by a guy who owns/operates Tactical Defense Institute which is only like 30 minutes away from me. Anywho, the edge of the Hellfire was absolute junk: I spent a few hours with my Lansky system and ended up with this: A complete reprofile polished to a mirror edge. It's a little much for a defensive knife but I had never sharpened a concave edge before. The sheaths that came with them are pretty but I had been looking for an excuse to build a kydex press so I did and made these: Now they ride much lower on the belt and are significantly more comfortable. I was kind of surprised how easy it was to make an acceptable sheath, the top one was the first piece of kydex I had ever pressed and turned out much better than anticipated. I had to make a few tweaks here and there but still, solid results. If I get good enough I may start making sheaths and holsters for a little side money. |

Sorry, completely forgot I had mentioned the Gerber.
It's the tan variant, with the sheath and thigh straps. This: http://www.survivalcampingstore.com/...mfinfantry.jpg |

FFxMD Crux showed up over the weekend. Much prefer the size/feel to the Falcon, which I quickly turned around for as much as I paid for it. Flipper action is nice, but overall there are some things that I would have liked to have on the knife like some jimping along the spine and finger guard, especially since the blade has the finger choil. The clip is garbage, but it looks like Pop's has one that should fit so I'll do that sometime.
Size-wise the blade and its cutting length is right around that of the PM2, but the handle itself is more slender and shorter. Definitely not as grippy as the G10 scales on the PM2, but then I suppose this isn't a 'work' knife. |

Nope. I rarely comment there. The clip and lack of jumping are just obvious complaints.

Been enjoying some pocket time with the Kizer Ursa Minor. Great office carry. Blade looks a little aggressive but the rest looks neat and distinguished. Haha. |

Hey folks, I could use some sharpening tips...
I have a 1000 grit, and it's either a 6000 or 8000 grit block. I also use a leather strop with some green compound for finishing. In the beginning, I could get some great, hair shaving sharpness after stropping. Now it seems to take much longer to get that edge, and it's inconsistent. What I've found is that the stones seem to concave over time, and I don't think I'm getting the best possible edge. I'm sure I'm not. I also have one of those stones made to level other stones. But it takes quite a bit of effort to get back to flat and true with those. Is there a better way? Or just think of stones as disposable? Perhaps it's technique? Too much pressure? What's too much? |

Wish I could help but I couldn’t sharpen with a stone like that to save my life.
I am a big fan of the guided systems |

I do have a spyderco setup that I'm not a huge fan of. Better results by hand on the stones. Your setup looks great but far more expensive than the maybe $50 or so I spent on two stones

Browsing Mass General in Asheville several months ago I remember them having a multitool... I didn't buy it at the time but I'm trying to find it now but can't remember the model, maybe OT can help me remember...
I think it was a Kershaw but it might have been a Gerber... or maybe it was an SOG? It had an assisted-open mechanism, but the pliers were the thing that sprung open, not the blade. It was a kind of weird setup but I liked it, but of course I can't find it now... |

I've been carrying my Kershaw Cryo for 3 years now. I love the size, flipper, etc, but damn it's some soft steel, doesn't hold an edge well at all. So, on a budget, whats a similar flipper/sized knife with a better blade?

Depends on what you mean by budget haha. If you like kershaw speed assist I would say some good options are the kershaw Link and my personal recommendation would be the Kershaw Dividend. The steels are still a little soft but you could always go a little more expensive ($80 I think) with the m390 versions which would be great. Other than those options I think the best next step is something like a S30V steel option from Spyderco which is going to run at least $100 new. |

D2 steel is great. That reminds me the Ontario Rat1-2 is a good budget blade, and comes in D2. I have only had it with black coatings but I have heard it can be prone to patina and rust if not taken care of. The leek is a great knife if you can get past the way it looks! I have never liked Ken Onion designs but he is a very popular designer so obviously some people like his stuff! |
