It's interesting that Nissan was way ahead of the market when they did their factory restorations on the Z.

In a nutshell, I think rare cars should be left alone, but cars like base mustangs and Z cars can be improved in performance without hurting value. Some people want the cars as they remember them... not as they actually were. People remember Z cars being indestructible and fast as hell.

They were really not that fast, but the memory paints a rosy picture. Some buyers today want that dream z rather than as they really came.... the day of the Datsun restomod has arrived.!

I could not be happier... I have said it before... Where ever the 911 market goes, and the 2002 market goes, the Z market will follow....
That was a good read re: modifications vs stock. I completely agree with pretty much everything you said. I think a lot of the plans I have for my upcoming Z are mods that won't subtract value from the car but actually enhance the driving experience and capture the "spirit" of the Z.

I think I mentioned it before but the Z I bought has 15 X 7's on it. What tire is everyone running on theirs? A friend of mine that has a 71' Porsche and an e30 BMW with 15x7s recommended the Dunlop DZ102's in a 205/55r15. Any other suggestions? I plan to do mostly spring through warm fall driving and will use the winter to work on her.

When I was considering 15's my options were DZ102, Yoko S-Drives, or BFG Comps. As per here: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests...y.jsp?ttid=192

I thought I landed on the Direzza's, but pricing on the BFG's seems lower than they used to be. I was bigger on noise and ride comfort though, which is why I preferred the DZ.

Actually mhoward has the DZ's on his miata and when I asked him mid 2016 he had good things to say. Maybe he will chime in.

FYI for size I was considering 195/50R15 or 205/60R15. OEM tire size was 175/70R14 so you may want to compare outer circumference to prevent your speedo from being too far off. Also as you approach and go beyond 200 width you start needing to be a little concerned with rubbing if you have the stock front valence, but given your pictures I don't think this is a problem for you.

The DZ's on the Miata have been pretty good to date. Of course they wear like a summer performance tire, but it's has decent wet handling and great sidewall strength.

I'd recommend them.

Thanks for the input, sounds like the DZ102's are the way to go. Tire Rack has what I need for about 95 per tire but I think I will shop around and see if I can find them cheaper elsewhere.

Why the larger profile with the front spoiler? I'm pretty sure the front spoiler is either plastic or fiberglass but since I don't have it in my possession yet, I can't check.

Stock bodywork comes into the wheel well more which is the restriction, that larger spoiler simply allows for a bigger tire... you certainly don't have to go larger if you don't want to.

Ohhh ok, that makes sense. I would go with the 60 profile but I can't seem to find a decent performance tire. I've only been able to find all seasons for them and I'd rather have something stickier.

What is a reasonable price for an unrestored 240z these days? Just started browsing and prices seem a little all over the board.

With rust you can still find one under 10k, maybe even as little as five or 6K

Without rust and in decent shape you’re looking at anywhere from $10-$20,000

Are we talking easy rust repairs, floor pans or fender replacement, or are you talking about more serious repairs requiring replacing rear quarters?

Ugh, having a hell of a time getting this thing shipped out of Mammoth.

Direct Auto Express quoted me about $1,100 to get it here. I signed up with them, they assigned a driver and then the driver cancelled the order because it was too far away. DAE said that it sometimes happens and I should expect another carrier to get it over the next few days.

About a week went by with no other carrier accepting it so I put it on uShip yesterday. Initial bids were around 1500 plus a 100 dollar service charge. I talked to a buddy who has a e30 shipped through 4 corners transport and they can do it for about 1100 as well. I cancelled uShip and DAE hoping that 4 corners can get a carrier to get it. He seemed pretty confident their carrier could come get it.

Waiting is the hardest part now

horseless carriage did mine. Service was good except somewhere along the line someones pants button put a scratch in the pass side door. They gave me a few hundred bucks to settle it though, i won' be getting it fixed i imagine.

service was great though and i think the scratch was just bad luck

How far out in the country was yours? The intital one I used wanted me to get the car to Modesto at one point which was like 4 hours away. Do they not understand the concept of shipping a car?

I'll check out Horseless Carraige if the current one doesn't pan out.

I think you're going to have trouble finding somebody to go all the way up the mountain to Mammoth. That's a long way off the beaten path to pick up just one car.

900 miles. For about 1k or so. So, seemingly more expensive than your option.

Also I had it insured before it went on their truck.

I think you are right, uShip's bids (not their initial website quote of ~1,000 dollars) are going to be accurate. I'm hoping there is a driver in LA with a pickup in Reno or Bishop and they can grab mine on the way.

I have a feeling I may have to fly out, drive it to my brothers in SLC (~8-10 hrs) and then get it shipped the rest of the way. The only problem with that is the fact that I will spend $500 on airfare/fuel and still have to pay 900 to get it home. At that point, I may as well just keep driving.

I really want to do that actually, but it does need some work and I'm not sure how reliable the car is yet. I've been assured it would make it but you never know. I would need to change the clutch/ maybe a few seals while I'm in there and get some tires put on her before I start the journey. Might want to do new cap/rotor/plugs/wires as well.

I'll be home for ChriZtmas!

If I were to go that route, what are some tools I should pick up on the way? I'm figuring a decent socket set with common sizes but are there any specific tools I must have for working on these cars on the side of the road?

I used Horseless Carriage as well... I think I recommended it to Ice Willy. I was disgusted to hear about the stratch. Mine was handled with white gloves with no issues. North Carolina to Texas for 1300 bucks.
