Consider yourself lucky. My MIL is here for the next month, might extend for XMas.

Yoga pants.

Though I felt more sorry for the guy that was with his wife who was maybe two hundred pounds passed possibly looking good in yoga pants.

I think it's little bit of a curse of growing up in a southern town where you just always at least acknowledged other people are existing near the same place you are presently existing so you say "how are you doing" or "'morning" and whatever else. This is bare minimum, you said something. Here in the "big city" no one says anything and would probably much rather you die than have to acknowledge you exist. Where I feel my problem is, is because of this I'm seen as extraordinary friendly due to my conditioned compulsion to acknowledge people so more than I'd like, because I open the door of conversation, get cornered into conversations I really wanted no part in. But it is nice to hear a little piece of people's story even if they become far too friendly seeking me out for conversation.

Eh, all of that really balances each other out so it's not really a gripe. I'd say my biggest gripe with office life is when people just don't leave your area. "I need to type up this email before I forget what was even going on and go get lunch" :the person that can't take the hint starts another topic: "... I... need to... leave". This is the same reason I don't mind going to other peoples place for events, when I'm done I can just leave. It would be weird, I'm told, if I have people over and suddenly leave.

When I was younger friends and the ex-wife would complain that when we went out for dinner when I was done with the night, conversation, whatever I would just get up and leave. I never noticed it until it was pointed out with many clear examples. I sort of get their gripes but on the other hand I enjoy not sitting in a restaurant wishing to leave. Now I still have to make a conscious effort to not do this but also explain that I would very much like to not sit any longer in this place and would like to leave. Going out to dinner with a group of Mrs. Lag's flighty friends is enjoyable... until I hit that point my brain says "leave" and I'm just there... then the half hour it takes for them to figure out the bill... if I trusted them more I'd pay and tell them it'll balance out in the long run. I t wouldn't... I'd be out time, sanity and cash at that point.

Thank
I go through the same thing sometimes. Friday a guy walked through our little office and I just said an innocent "Hey dude, how goes it?". I got a "well....I think I might be leaving my wife...."

Shheeiiiittt. That turned into an awkward 20 min conversation.

Just forge ahead as if it didn't happen.

"Yeah I hear that, TGIF! See ya later!"

Then power walk.

I'm like lag though, I can't not acknowledge someone. It seems rude to just not say anything to people you work with.

But you initiated it

Also, cubicles can be disassembled. Always carry a torx set in your desk.

It's also possible to knock out panels. Handy if a friend or enemy occupies the next cube.

Smile and nod. Maybe a quick “hey” as you walk by if it’s someone you know won’t irritate the crap out of you.

You get the acknowledgement out without looking like a complete DB.

This is how I live my work life. I have crap to do and don’t have time for small talk.

No f'ing way, don't need someone finding me that easily, let them deal with our DMV if they want to find out where my randomly-assigned plate is registered.

I'm not a big talker, plus some of the guys in the club are a bit short on hearing and/or memory.

I’m at a Colorado Symphony concert. Woman behind us is talking incessantly at intermission. Several annoying things about her:

- strong New York accent
- mispronounces composers: deBYOOsee, mohzahrt, etc.

I’m here with my wife, both of us classical musicians, and we are cracking up half in horror.

There's one guy that talks endlessly, it feels, about his own stuff and when he finally is ready to leave I make him stay and talk about whatever pops into my head in hopes HE gets the feeling of needing to avoid me to avoid being trapped in my endless nonsense rants. It's working.

Talking incessantly I can see.

Why is an accent annoying though?
How are you supposed to pronounce their names?

Foreign names in English with an accent.
