God, I love these cars. I wish I knew something about fixing them up, I'd totally buy one.

My gf and I have one right now, sitting in the garage.
1971 240z. L24 engine, but with the 280z (I think 1980) 5 speed tranny with 4 ford disc brakes, electric fan, aftermarket electric fuel pump, original dual-carbs. It's green, 30k miles on the engine (swapped from another 240z) which is built for 10:1 compression, the car has 107k miles on it otherwise. It's got a few problems though, wheel berrings, transmission mounts, rear-brakes, etc. |

You have good tastes FiveDoor.
240z or bust. They get progressively heavier with more crap piled on (and fugly bumpers) with the later models. Auto = DoNotWant I went partial retard and bought a 73 240z as my first car when I moved to California for a job (dream car and I had the cash). I paid what that guy is asking for the orange auto, but mine has a bit of work put into it (mild cam, headers, SU carbs, electronic ignition, 280z transmission, and a few other odds and ends). The only problem is that a monkey with a roll of electrical tape did the wiring, and it sucks, bad. That and the rear diff imploded after a few months I plan to step it up to full retard early next year and turn it into a streetable trackday car. I'm sticking with the L24 for now... with mild suspension work the car is capable of things well past my driving level, so no need for an LSx As it looks now: |

First the Early 260Zs are actually good cars, but weigh more than the 240Z they replaced, the 74.5 ones really need help. The good news is they are the cheapest S30 body and you can always put in an L28 or a hi-po L24 and be in great shap. In 1979 the line went to a true GT car, which is why is went from Z to ZX. There was a cry from many to make the car a Luxury tourer and or a higher end GT to compete with the others in the same class. This logic stuck all the way to the 350Z when Nissan tried to get back to it's roots. |

this is a project that's been going on forever....belongs to an old customer of mine. He's got a Viper GTS, a Cobra and this 240z...he's had hit more than 30 years I believe.

To my surprise there are actually some 240Z's available around these parts (mainland europe).
Serious question: Other than the Toyota 6's (non-existant here) and big US V8's (likewise), has anyone ever attempted to drop in anything else? Decent BMW engines are all over the place here.. How feasable would it be to drop in, say, a straight-6 from a 530? |

I spent most of 2002 daily-driving a borrowed 4-speed 280Z while my Miata was off the road for the Great $14,000 Oil Change. What a great car. It had lots of torque, lovely feel from the non-assisted steering, classic 1970's brown metallic with those aluminum slotted Appliance mags. Loud as crap since it had a custom exhaust featuring the OEM muffler off a Dakota R/T, a little stiff with Ground Control suspension, great brakes (Hawk pads, i.i.r.c.) and clean cosmetics, including the headlight covers.
Riding in that car, listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd on the CD player, and helping me and the Z-car's owner rebuild the Miata were formative experiences for my son. He gets his learner's permit next week. He likes my Miata and has driven it for a couple sessions at Talladega Gran Prix (lapping in about 1:30, not bad for a 14-year-old getting into 3rd gear for the first time ever) but says the Miata is more my thing than his - he'd love an FC RX7 or a Datsun Z. We've been up to Eddie Raddatz's shop a couple times, but not recently. Quote:
mh_WRX, were those photos at Roebling? Re: dropping a BMW I-6 into a Datsun Z - wouldn't that be like winning a gold medal, and then having it bronzed? Last edited by Bill_Rockoff; 11-04-2008 at 11:20 AM. |

A buddy of mine is in the middle of doing a 280z swap into a 240z. It going to be sick as hell.

This car looks good no matter what. Leave it stock and its a classic little sports car. Beef it up just a bit and it screams race car. Deck it out like that grey one and it's full-on, pants-creaming auto-porn. I'm gonna have to own one of these some day. It will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine. |
