One of my favorite drinking establishments is on the grounds of an airport and shares a building with the FBO. This particular FBO gets a lot of military traffic. Was in there and saw some guys in there that fly certain somethings having a drink in their suits. I hadn't seen that before so I was curious. Nice guys. |

Don't be a chode, what'd they fly? If it was a secret/prohibited, they wouldn't be there in the first place.

So what happens when one of these times a US and Russian plane accidentally collide and someone dies?

What always baffled me about that story is that crews of US spying planes seemed to not have been trained on how to destroy their sensitive equipment.
I mean... what? |

The standard policy back then for destroying onboard electronics was to either pour coffee on it(no lie...) or hit it with an escape axe. I don't think anyone ever envisioned an event where the crew and the aircraft survived a catastrophic event intact and needing to land in a semi-hostile country.

^ that and no one wanted to carry thermite in an aircraft. Or have it on a carrier deck, for that matter.

That’s not true. There were some destruct circuits that didn’t work. They tried to take the crash axe to as much as they could. |

Not a fighter...or a jet. But since we don't have a tiltrotor thread...
Wonder what's so top-secret about the engine intakes? EDIT - Probably not the intakes, but the rotation mechanism. Last edited by banman; 02-06-2018 at 08:33 PM. |

Wouldn't the wings really cut down on lift when the rotors are vertical?

^ lift, no. Down force/ground-effect somewhat.
The prop is a airfoil, moving through air. It creates lift. Doesn't matter if there's empty air, the ground, or a large relatively-flat wing under it. |

But surface drag would be, as the wings in that instance become a surface that is directly perpendicular in the direction of motion, assuming it's only going vertical. Similar to the cross section of the plane when it's moving forward. |
