We've got a basic folding crate for our boxer mix, but he's pretty much destroyed it. Long ago, he learned how to pull the side in and escape, so I had to put zip ties on all the latch points. Now he's become adept at taking those off, so they only last a couple days. Plus he's popped the welds on more than one bar.

Looking for heavy gauge, drop pin construction. Only one I found was 54", which is a lot bigger than I need for a 55lb dog.
My dog destroyed her metal folding crate, we had a bunch of the same issues and solutions, but she always found a way out. So, we got one of those plastic travel crates and reinforced the door with some reusable zipties I found and she hasn't gotten out since. Bit cheaper of an option than the really heavy duty crates.

$300 is really reasonable for something strong. I've done a few custom dog cages in the backs of suv's for people that used it for hunting and dog shows. Had about $200 in material alone plus a day of work. I've seen the impact dog crates in person and they are really solid.

I did one of those too. He basically put so much pressure on the door that it basically folded in half and was across the room. Dead serious. We nicknamed the dog yard "Doggy Supermax". I had to install 6' privacy fencing (so he can't see what's going on and therefore get excited) with a couple 10' sections (facing the road) because he can jump over the 6' sections. Catahoulas are no joke.

Lest you think I'm exaggerating here's a pretty typical post from another Catahoula "owner"

Quote:
Consider installing an invisable fence along the existing fence line. My Catahoula is stubborn -but he understands the beeping of a shock collar very well. I used to feel bad using a shock collar, but hey - it saves his life by keeping him inside the yard.

BTW - I feel your pain. I lost the carpet, 3 interior doors, window sills, a love seat and a lamp to my guy. I love him so much, though.

And my dog trainer just gave up on him. Most aren't familiar enough with Catahoulas to help much.

Don't do the barbed wire - she'll use it to hike herself up with it. Catahoulas don't seem to feel pain when they're set on something. She'll get hurt over and over again to get across that fence.

ETA - A run is a great idea if you can afford it and have room for it. BUT - you have to put a roof on it (as Catahoulas can climb chain like fence). AND - you'll have to surround the inside perimeter of it with buried concrete blocks or big sidewalk pavers because she'll dig her way out.

An invisible fence would never work on a determined catahoula out in the open, but I think it'll work great with the fence. In the open, they'd just run straight at - take the shock - and keep going. But with a fence - it takes time to climb and that should be a good deterrant. I'm starting to think it'd work for me! Right now, he ***8216;s only free to run with me with him and a training collar in place.

My lab pit mix is the same, she pushed the first door enough to bend the bars that connect it to the kennel and it was off, then we did the reinforcement with the zipties with a new door and it's been good. I really understand your pain! Mine can't even keep a toy intact for more than 30 seconds.

It's unbelievable. I buy him toys made out of fire hose. They typically last a week. That said he's also the sweetest, most good natured dog I've ever had. Catahoulas are such weird dogs. Imagine the power and bone structure of a pit bull, stretched vertically to the proportions of a greyhound. They are incredibly powerful, but also incredibly fast and dexterous. When he runs he spends more time in the air than on the ground.

The brand Impact is probably the best.
The Impact crates look indestructible, albeit a bit industrial for the living room. Also waiting a month or more to get one wasn't going to work.

But in true OT fashion, I ignored the recommendations given and went with the crate I linked, which is highest rated on Amazon, with the negative reviews falling into "poor instructions" (don't need 'em), hinge/latch weld popped (which I can easily fix w/ my welder), and wheels fell off (not planning to put the wheels on it).

I ordered from Chewy, and it should be here this afternoon.

I probably didn't need the large...when he lays down he takes up like 1/4 of it.

Took a video of my 20 minute trip. He got anxious and started to mouth at the corner of the door and cage, but no serious pawing or biting. I think the bars are far enough apart he doesn't try to bite across two of them (at least not yet).

Potato webcam capture:

I may need to get a clip for the latch...he's a crafty bastard, trying to manipulate the latch with his tongue.

Well, just took the dog to the vet and walked out with a $400 bill. Guess I'm keeping this damn thing at this point.

She's cute and damn smart. She is getting the potty training down and doing great in the crate during the day. Need to work on the nipping part though.

I have a collapsible version of this one that I got from Carry My Dog a few years ago. Very happy with it. Super expensive but cheaper than replacing car interior when traveling. Also nice that its collapsible if I'm traveling with her and can't leave her loose in someone's house when we have to leave. Don't see the collapsible one on their site anymore but maybe they can still make one for you?

http://www.carrymydog.com/heavy-duty...?variantId=551

Edit: Just saw you got one Fliz. Good luck. That's some ingenuity right there...

If he's anything like mine he'll just turn it into cloth confetti anyway.

Yes. We gave him blankets and beds when we first got him last year. He just got better at tearing them up, in and out of the crate.

I may add a plywood floor.

Today I got a nice soft crate to replace the giant metal monstrosity that has darkened my dining room for the last two years.

Need recommendations on dog shampoo. The puppers seems to itch a little bit and want to see if there is a good shampoo that can help.

Anything else causing the itching?

Oils in the food can help. Ultra-Oil is my new favorite right now, rotating that in w/ Iceland pure.

Top shampoo: Reliq. Stuff is amazing, and great at cleaning.
Earthbath has always been a good one for me for many years.

4 months of Mocha. Her first visit to the vet vs getting her last shot Saturday (5lbs vs 34):

After the vet, she hung out with a pair of dogs whose combined weight must have been half of hers. Thankfully, she didn't eat either of them and played very nicely despite her dwarfing them. She also decided to steal one of their beds.

If I fits, I sits.

Her black 'mask' she had as a puppy has totally faded and she looks very zaguate (street dog), which she is, but she's quite well behaved besides jumping up on the counters now that she can reach.

Not sure. Gave her a bath when I first got her but she probably needs a good scrub as I’m not sure how well or poor she was taken care before she was abandoned. Going to grab her a new harness too since she still has the one that was on her when I found her. Speaking about abandoning dogs, hear this story from my friends daughter yesterday.

She had a classmate who is from Russia (8 year old girl). The Russian family apparently picked up and moved rather presumably back to Russia in quick fashion. The girl called my friends daughter to say goodbye and my friends daughter asked what they were going to do with their dog. The girls reaponse was “my family set her free.” As in dropped her off somewhere, probably a trail head or mountain area.

Who the **** does this ****?

Supposedly San Diego has a decent sized problem with people ditching their pets on hiking trails. Blows my mind considering sand Diego shelters are no kill shelters.
