some friends asked me to take their portrait today. It was last minute. The shoot took place about 90 minutes after they asked in the middle of the day. they are looking for Christmas cards. any advice from the group who take more portraits than I? Thoughts over all? I have about 25 images total

Trying to nail down this astrophotography thing. I'm close. I really need to this camera sent in for the H-Alpha mod so I can get those elusive reds.

Nikon D800, skytracked for 120 seconds, ISO800, Nikkor 14-24mm f2.8 at 14mm @ f2.8, foreground blended. 100 seconds at f8, ISO400. Four images combined.

I really like this shot my wife snapped of my truck after doing a quick donut on a mud flat.

Totally not seasoned but here is my novice opinion. First, they are both SUPER bright. white skin, blond hair, white background is VERY bright. The light is harsh and straight on.

Model 5. shallow DOF, it works great as an artsy photo, but does nothing to focus on all of the models face. The sparkle on the necklace is awesome

Model 4. Large DOF, but you still miss out on the details like the earrings, the hair, etc.

If you want some amazing examples of simple flash setups look at the strobist group on flickr. Some of those people are flat out amazing portrait photographers.

I don't know **** about portraiture, so I can't really give you any critiques.

I do know that focus on the first one, you nailed the eyelashes, but missed on the eye.

yup...all good thoughts. the light was a single beauty dish. I was demoing lights and looking at what set up I want to buy and this set up had a single beauty dish with a diffusion panel.

thanks for the ideas and thoughts. I really appreciate it!

one strobe pony is also pretty good

Both "make" you post the settings and speedlight setup. This also gives an awesome insight into how the picture was taken.

Some from a hike I did. It was overcast most of the day, so I'm shocked these "came out." Some are a little dark, but it was an amazing place.

This one I need to lighten up a little, but didn't have the time without blowing out the sky.

Another I need to lighten a little as the foreground is a little washed out.

The haze was crazy up there and I felt like all my landscape shots were "dirty" *shrugs* some of them came out with more editing than I wanted.

I really like the colors on this one, if I can offer some constructive criticism, at least for my taste, I would recommend framing the shot to include more of the sky and less of the ground, specifically, I would have rotated the camera up until that patch of black dirt in the bottom left was no longer in the frame. It distracts from the focus, which should be the brilliant colors of the sunset, and the fog in the valley.

Or, if you like the horizon placement in the frame, then zoom the shot in till you no longer have that patch in frame to maintain the same horizon location.

The colors on this remind me of a shot I took several years ago on a hot air balloon ride

Actually that is a great tip, I might have to go back and crop it.
