I have a Typhoon that I bought before I "knew better" (before I discovered these WRX sites). I didn't install it, because of the unbelieveably negative posts about CAI's in general.

While I can understand how a bad design could mess up the A/F ratio, and that a turbo would heat up air whether it came in cold or warm, I couldn't believe that K&N could be so wrong, what with their long history in the performance industry. So, I wrote to them, and got a very clear reply about their design and development effort. Basically, they didn't go wild on filter size or pipe diameter, and kept the MAF in the same position as the stocker.

I still have some concerns about water ingestion (seems the puddle would have to be REALLY deep), and the cost/ performance benefit isn't real good, compared to some other mods. But, it's smog-legal, it's well made, and K&N's will filter as good or better than anything out there, so I'll probably install it. If it leans out the A/F ratio a little, that might not be so bad, considering how rich these cars run.

I would be interested to see more opinions from people with this PARTICULAR intake, as most of the ones I've read talk about the other, more popular brands out there, ones that don't have the same design features as the K&N.

I was the one that asked about the A/F and got the non-reply from Vivid.

I really would like to know if it has the same issues as all the other CAI...so much so that if you want to get a dyno run done while recording A/F I will kick in a couple bucks toward it. Seriously! This is something I want to know. Hit me up on pm if you are interested.

I've had one on my 02 Wagon for a while now. Also put it on before I "knew better". A lot of negative posts on CAIs have to do with the inner diameter of the intake. The MAF is calibrated for a specific diameter and if you mess with this dimension, the computer is assuming you have x when you actually have y, thus screwing up the A/F ratio. On a whim I measured the stock box and then the K&N, without getting an inside micrometer out and using just digital calipers, I saw that they're the same size. Something like 65.95mm our there about. Some negative posts were regarding intakes that had a diameter of 70mm or something else other than stock, which makes sense.

So, as far as the diamter question is concerened, K&N is the same as stock. Now as far as flow and turbulence goes, who knows.

I haven't had a problem, and I'm expecting my Cobb AccessPort any day now and plan on keeping it on to see how it all pans out.

If I knew all this before, I'd just to the silencer removal and leave the stock box, for what it's worth.

Default My STi Typhoon review

I figured I would add some comments about this intake I just installed on my Sti. First off let me start by saying I had a drop in k&N and removed the silencer. wow, makes more noise, ok didn't expect much, managed a 13.32 with the rest of the car stock.

Installed the K&N Typhoon Intake for the Sti. Here are my thoughts and some comments....
1. The car does pull harder (no dyno to prove this so i guess it doesn't count ) most noticable in 2nd and 3rd, haven gotten to run 4th all the way through yet, I don't like going that fast at night.
2. The car sounds much better, more engine sound, more turbo sound, more bov sound, all in all, all intake noises were amplified. Some may like this, others won't.
3. IT IS LOUD! suprised the s*it out of me when i first drove it. Didn't expect it to make so much noise, But I like it, as previosly noted, it sounds good.
4. The product was great, the clamps, intake, filter, etc... very good quality, detailed instructions, I might have done a few things different if i were making the kit myself but nothing worth saying anything about.
5. Looks great under the hood, matches intake manifold perfectly.
6. Overall I am very happy with the kit, again no dyno to prove the power but it has increased, you can feel it. Boost has not changed, same as before. Just figured i would comment on this and even tho i know i am entering into the no intake works zone, I feel, this one does.

After my drive, i got out to make sure nothing fell off, laid my hand on the red piping, the piping was cold. We will see as the days go on with this intake, may see the track this weekend, I'll let everyone know if i go and what happens. Otherwise....
Two thumbs up to K&N for making another great product.

I find most short rams prove to give the same results on the STi. I bought a GPMoto short ram and would report the exact same characteristics. I noticed quite a bit more pull up top. I have a catless TBE and it just felt like it was running out of breath. Since the intake it feels like it pulls stronger for longer.

I am creeping boost worse now on my unported 39, but I was expecting that.

I am not detecting any detonation and after several hundred miles the ECU does not feel like it pulled timing at all so I'm assuming the ECU is not detecting knock either....which surprises me being how sensitive the stock ECU is. Anyways...I have come to the conclusion that short rams on STi's are a worthwhile investment.

I got mine cheaper but I have some connections, I paid $195, shipped for the K&N. May be cheaper options but It's well worth what I have into it. no cel no problems so far as day 2 comes to an end.

Does anyone have experience with a worthwhile intake that does not add considerable noise ? Or....do you thing that creating some sort of seal at the fender wall would help/work ?

Other then stock, good luck.

Too add to my review...The intake works great with an Invidia downpipe as well . Just put one of those on last night. So Intake, Downpipe, Stock exhaust. I think thats it till i get some sort of engine management. The intake does make a difference and now that i have a downpipe, the car pulls much harder than stock. Does not seam to choke out like it did stock. Even the intake alone helped that.

I just installed mine on a 02 wrx and it was great. I didnt notcie any gains but ill wait till the ecu learns but it does make a nice sound. the instructions were great, its amazing how much hard work they put into it. I got the short ram typhoon intake and the silver matches my intake manifold perfectly. it seemed to smooth things out also. im at cobb stage 2. AWESOME BUY.

mine is the kind where you can convert it to cold air and short ram. i leave it as a shorty, it really seems to perform better. i think when i made this thread i had it as a cai.

Sounds like you guys are talking about the CAI and not the short ram typhoon correct? The short ram typhoon, the one specifically for the STi has gotten nice reviews here in the 2.5L forum.

Question for you guys:

Do people usually remove the snorkel when installing a Typhoon?

you dun have to, and i didn't remove that. (i got delete elbow, and i dun wanna waste my money, so i just leave it there. may be it is good to let it redirect some more cold air to the intake.

Great review.

Also keep in mind people the K&N is not just a short elbow like the GP-moto

I removed the snorkel when i did mine. I was going to leave it there but without having a way to direct the air from the snorkel through where the silencer used to be and then back into the engine bay (where the filter is) I just removed the whole stock intake sytem. From what i see with the snorkel removed it should give fresh cold air under the hood where the snorkel used to be.
