Default The left lane is for passing.

Not cruising, not 'going fast,' and definitely not pulling a trailer. If you are in the left lane, and you are not passing, get over. Regardless of weather or not you have someone behind you. This is a freeway/highway rule that only partially applies on city streets. The rare excemptions are heavy traffic and emergencies. Do it.

i agree. i was behind a truck last night coming from PIR...light traffic, no cars in the lane to the right, yet he needed to be in the left lane doing 65mph. i rode his ass for 3 miles, didn't phase him a bit and i had to pass him in the right lane.

frustrating. I will usually give them a quick flash with the lights before I pass on the right. I make sure to give them a wave if they do get over, then when I am done passing get back over myself.

Which reminds me...

if you were in a black bugeye last friday night around about 4PM on the 10E right before the 17, you are extremely guilty of this. I respect you for doing 5 over the limit... I wish I had that much patience. HOWEVER, do NOT do it in the HOV lane, when you could very easily do it in one of the right hand lanes, where vehicles are passing you, and allow those of us that are impatient to continue on our merry way.

This is why I may have cut you off getting back in the HOV lane once I passed you.

Ah, the HOV lane...remember folks, if it's 'traffic hours,' then consider both the HOV lane and the lane next to it passing lanes. If it is not, then the "HOV lane" is the normal passing lane.

Rob, I agree that person should have gotten over. On the same token though, when you got back in the furthest left lane, were you passing (rhetorical question)?

What's odd to me is how many people will do it once you're outside town. Driving to Flagstoff/Prescott/Sedona it seems like everyone is aware of this "rule". The second you get back into town everyone is back to driving like garbage.

Can I also throw in my personal pet peeve of people (usually on cell phones) changing lanes in front of me at a light only to go 10mph slower than the car they got out from behind. WTF is this about?

Hate to say it , but most people either don't care or don't know. I was at traffic school last year and I was surprised how many people in the class fit in these two catagories... Police can ticket for this, but never do.

Dude... Be glad your not here... Those flucking hippies in the toyota prius's are moving chicanes. You can be going 80mph then they dart out in front of you, cut you off. Once they have road hogged the fast lane, They then slow down to watch the fuel computer and adjust their speed to get 80 miles per gallon. Then set the cruise control to 56.8 mph and roll.

I deal with them a few ways......

On th bike. I can split lanes... So I can sneak by them and scare the ship out of them with some loud ducati sounds... Gets them every time... Pass them sharing their lane. (legal out here)
In the car... I wait for a right lane clearing then pass them. once in front of them I brake check them. (not hard)
Brake check does a few things.
Tells them " hey, ahole get out of that lane. "
Also forces them to use the brakes and knocks them off cruise control. They almost always look in the mirror and get over after that point.

I have watch alot of people do this towards the little toyotas. Its becoming a real problem with those people.
End result I'm sure california will be the 1st to have a hate crime law made to save the pirus drivers.

Yup. There was a car going 1-2MPH faster than him in the the leftmost (non-HOV) lane. I got around her, then moved back over to the right.

"Left lane day dreamers: This problem is an epidemic here in the valley. There’s a rule out there that says something like, slower traffic keep right. Should you ever find yourself pacing the car next to you, move the f*$% over as you will still be able to maintain the speed previous to changing lanes. If everyone minded this simple concept the left lane would always be open to make a pass when necessary. This will make the highways and streets more efficient and maximize the use of all lanes. "

http://www.ridindirtyinphoenix.com

This guy's got the right idea, but not everyone will conform. Most people think they're going fast enough to claim the left lane, or in traffic it'll move faster - which it does because its the furthest from all the horrible merging going on in the right lane, but the prob will never get solved unless they write tickets. That would remove 90% of the soccer moms ect.

I heard they are removing the hybrids right to use the hov lane as a prius cruising at 80mph is not actually anymore efficient than a regular car... It's only usin ght egas engine on highways - the electric only works in stop start driving - so they're thinking of reversing the rule to force hybrids into the stop start traffic...

Hope that doesn't mean V8 SUV's can use the HOV lane though to keep the tanks moving

Please note...

The HOV lane is for HOV traffic. It is not meant for passing; during any hours. i.e. - some states have double yellows except for a few spots seperating their HOV lanes, and furthest most left lanes.

This thread is retarded. If I only got in the left lane to "pass" I would constantly be in and out of lanes passing everyone as I tend to go 5-10mph faster than traffic.

While I agree the dip****s pulling trailers, semis, and slow ass hybrids should not be in the fast lane, I think the idea of everyone keep to the right and only move left to pass is ignorant. All that would do is cause accidents from non-stop lane changing....

no brock u are wrong that is how the Europeans drive and that is the rule on the autobahn. americans and canadians are the only ones not use that technique. now im not saying that it would be perfect, but it would help the flow of traffic.

Actually, the HOV lanes in Phoenix are designated by road signs to be HOV or 'normal' during specific times of the day.

If you are passing a vehicle, and know you will be passing another in ~15 seconds or less, then I agree that you should stay over. Otherwise, get out of the left lane. Regardless of the speed at which a person drives or the type of car they are in, they do not own the road.

I would say the opposite is true. If there is no designated lane for passing, then people could just pass anywhere with cars zig-zagging in and out of lanes...this would cause accidents. Designating a passing lane lets people know both where to pass and where they should expect to be passed.

Absolutely true! And the **** driving goes all the way down I-10 to Tucson. Head east of Tucson to NM, or north of Phoenix to Flag, rational passing-lane-aware driving returns. But everywhere in between you get the 'tards just driving in the left. If I'm ever convicted of road rage, it will involve this issue.

This is what I am saying. Not saying stay in the left lane all the time, but if you are running faster than the cars to your right, stay in the left until all cars are passed then merge over.

Obviously, this is the point of some of the posts in this thread. Others not so much. If there is a line of cars going considerably slower Ill be damned if I am just gonna tuck into that pack of traffic. When the lanes clear out (i.e. I have passed everyone) then I will. I guess it depends on your definition of "cruising" and "passing"
