Question Rear seat removal in '02 - '03 wagon - help!

Not sure if I should post this here or in the general community...

For those with a 2002 - 2003 Wagon (WRX for sure and likely 2.5TS and OBS):

What does it entail to remove the back-rest portion of the rear seats? I've removed the seat/bench portion, which was just two bolts and out they popped. But the 1/3 and 2/3 fold down portions look like they're connected a bit more firmly, with possible removal of some of the plastic molding and the bar they rotate on being necessary.

Also, I didn't know if the bar those seat-backs appear to pivot on would need to be removed, and if so, if it has any sort of bracing function across that portion of the wagon, as it appears to possibly go all the way across and into the wheel wells.

Any help appreciated.

Edit:
P.S. I did search. All I was able to find was info on removing the sedan's rear seat.

Let me see if I can remember. Did you remove the four bolts on the seat backs (under the felt in the center)? Once you do that, you put one seat down and pivot it so you can take the back out (there are no nuts or bolts on the sides). It shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to remove them both.

also there is a pin on the bar that dissapears into the plastic trim you have to fold down the seat to the correct angle to get it out.. I undid all the brackets on the floor (from the trunk) and lifted it off the bolts that are welded into the floor in the center.. once you do that it will flex forward a little.. i was afraid it was all going to fall apart, but it never did.. and its solid now that i got it back in.. so you just push it fwd a little and mess with the angle to get the pin to line up right and then it should jus slide out.. now that i think about it you might not have to flex it at all.. if you line it up right and just slide it to one side...

good luck its a pita..

It's quite easy I'm sure... It should be just like my '97 OBS that I pulled out to recover. I haven't pulled the rears out of my WRX wagon yet.

I can help you Dan... heck I'll be messing in the garage tonight if you want to stop over... we can take a look at it.

Thanks Jon. I'll take a look at it when I get home and if it looks like more than I can handle or am comfortatable with, I'll pop by. I'll try tinkering the way Sea Dragon Rex and elsanto described. If I'm/we're successful and it's not storming tomorrow night, I'd like to make it by the show. Mine can be the ghetto-looking one w/o back seats.

bump...I'm stuck at the bar part. Can't figure out how to get the bar off. I can't see a spot where it slides off. Can someone post a more detailed explanation? Or a link to one?

Thanks.

Edit: Nevermind. I figured it out. All you have to do if unbolt the two bolts on each seat near the middle. It's underneath part of the seat cover. Once you undo those bolts, the seat falls right out.

Default 2002 sedan variant for rear seat removal

The 2002 sedan I own came with an armrest/pass-through hole in the middle of the rear seat backrest, but otherwise it is a solid span from one door to the other. So, first off, while you have only three wire loop hooks like other models, there is a 4th bolt just to the right of the center one (aka there are two 12-mm bolts to remove at the center), at the bottom of the back rest.
Once you are done with that, work the side seat bealts outboard of the side bolsters, and pull the center belt for some slack. Holding the backrest with both hands from under, pull it up. After about 20mm (3/4") of travel, you will feel a notch/stop, keep pulling up gently, this is the "hooked" end of the upward seat-holding bracket. You can use the hook at the top of the armrest hole to pull upwards as well, but remember to stow the armrest back in once the whole backrest disengages.
Slide the seat backrest out to the driver's side to minimize the tugging of the center seatbelt. For those who still own this greatest Bugeye .
