Default 2020 Mazda2

Unconventional’ all-new Mazda2 revealed

Proudly “unconventional’ Japanese car maker Mazda has revealed its latest not-the-norm car, the all-new Mazda2 supermini.

Set for market launch in the autumn, the new Mazda2 is the fourth model to get a Mazda SKYACTIV lightweight and high tech makeover; already, the firm is claiming it will “raise the bar” in the supermini sector.

New 2015 MAZDA2
Already now in production at Mazda’s Hofu, Japan car plant, the new Mazda2 is, unlike the current car, based on a Mazda-unique platform. Today’s model shares its underpinnings with the Ford Fiesta. Mazda’s flexible SKYACTIV body and chassis provides the necessary flexibility, although the new car will be bigger than the current model.

It will use 1.5-litre SKYACTIV-P and SKYACTIV-D engines already seen in the Mazda3. It will be fairly punchy then, offering a 100hp variant, although Mazda’s likely to detune it to also offer a 75hp version. As the Mazda3 1.5 100 can top 55mpg and emit 119g/km CO2, expect the Mazda2 to dip below 110g/km and possibly nudge 60mpg. The diesel is likely to return well over 80mpg.

New 2015 MAZDA2
Visually, Mazda has deployed its Kodo language to create a sharp-edged model with flowing feature lines. The rear wheelarches and fastback hatch are neat and the big Mazda grille will give it presence. Seems that 2014 Geneva Motor Show Hazumi concept was pretty telling…

Inside, in common with the Mazda CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3, it boasts a clean look that’s centered around the MZD Connect infotainment system; again, suggesting tech in bigger and more expensive cars will filter into the supermini range.

New 2015 MAZDA2
Mazda is also claiming “class-beating” features from its i-ACTIVSENSE active safety tech, and a “remarkably spacious and refined interior”.

The new Mazda2, the latest in a line that’s clocked up an impressive 2.4 million sales since 1996 (yes, we’re surprised too) will launch in Japan in the autumn; UK prices and launch date are to be confirmed.

My hope is that when they're making cars like this in the future with EV propulsion, they will be RWD because with traction control where it is, there is no justification for FWD when the motor fits anywhere in the car.
