Default Bought a car in OR. Lost the title or whatever it is. Need to register in WA

So I'm new to buying used cars in Americaland.
I bought a car in December.
I haven't got the title paperwork.
Is there an online utility that will give owner details from VIN or plate number?
Then I can call him up, get a new one shipped out.
Yes, I know I'm a jackass.

you could try contacting the DOL's & DMVs.. youd probably have to walk in there and carefully explain your situation..

I actually went into the local office.
They treated me like I was some sort of idiot. Can you believe that?
They said, "Erm, try calling ORegon or something?"
All I need is the guy's details.
:-(

In my neck of the woods (Virginia), if I lost the title to my car, I can go into the DMV and get a duplicate title, because I have already titled the car in Virginia in my name.

Sounds like you never registered or titled the car in your name before you lost the paperwork? If that is the case, it is not on record that you own the car. You need to go to the DMV in the last state the car was titled/registered (Oregon?) and talk to them, they will most likely require you to get in contact with the previous owner to verify the transaction.

The guy you bought it from could report it stolen, keep your money, and get the car back. That's what I would do.

Thank you, I'd really appreciate that.
Thanks to anyone else offering help too.
I just want to make sure my wife isn't thrown into jail because of a car I bought her. "Merry Christmas honey!"
Thanks again.

And just to confirm, the car has never been registered to me. Oops...
