Under $400, hunt Craigslist or Ebay. If you're just doing some light trail riding, then pick one that fits (most sub $400 bikes are going to be very similiar), and go without a suspension fork so you get better components.

If you're really going to ride it, you might want to save up some more cash. Trust me, I've destroyed enough cheap bikes to last me a life time, including the old taco'd rims and blown hubs trick the first time it went over a jump

i have to respectfully disagree with the no suspension fork comment. First, pretty much any mountain bike made in the last 10 years will have at least a so-so suspension fork and second, you will REALLY appreciate the suspension fork. It allows you to do more things with the bike, and do more things comfortably, rather than getting the everloving crap beaten out of you, which will probably turn you off of biking in general. $400 is not an unreasonable amount to budget for a basic hardtail mountain bike. I just looked at the first page of craigslist and found these. PM me if you have questions.

Agree with ^^. It's not like companies make bikes with way better components but no suspension fork in the $300-$400 range. In fact, they don't really do that in any price range any more. Besides, the low end fork (RST or something similar) you'll get on an entry level mtn. bike will still benefit a novice rider more than a rigid fork. Rear suspension on cheaper bikes is another story. A solid hardtail is a better decision than some craptastic full suspension bike that will be heavy and inefficient.

I bought an Iron Horse Warrior 4.0 last year, great beginner bike.
Granted some of the components are a bit weak, this gives you the option to upgrade in the future if you become more serious about the sport.

I plan on upgrading the front and rear shock since I'm now starting to hit bigger jumps and drops. It's a great platform to start off on.

I got mine on sale for $600, it was originally $850 I believe.
Check craigslist though, there are some good deals on there. But it just might be worth it to go the extra mile and drop a few hundred more.

Im toying with selling my Schwinn S-9-six. Its a Full suspension bike with a lockable rear shock. Paid $1000 for it way back when. Id be willing to let it go for your price range if i can find a new bike. Lemme know if your interested.

Well, I disagree with you. Check out the GT Peace 9er, it's in the high $400 range, with disc brakes and 29in wheels. What can you get with a suspension fork for that price?

Not to mention, what does a POS RST fork really get you? They're all undersprung, so you're going to bob on the uphills, they'll bottom out on any jump, and the amount of vibration they actually dampen is minimal compared to a steel shock (even less if the frame is steel too).

Buy some thicker gloves. If you really get in to trail riding, you're gonna want a fork that can take bigger hits anyway, if you stick to fireroads/pavement, you'll be much happier with a rigid fork. That's my two cents.

Yes, that's a good price, but 29ers are a pretty small niche (fad?) in the MTB world and are usually only ridden by avid cyclists who already own a slew of bikes but want to try something different. I doubt many first time buyers/riders are going to go that route.

OK, first, the Peace 9r is nowhere near the high $400s, especially with multi speeds (I won't even get into the illogic of putting a novice rider on a single speed). It's almost $800 and you can get a really serious cross-country hardtail for that kind of dough.
http://www.gtbicycles.com/usa/eng/Pr...ard-Tail/#5803

Second, As nhmtns has stated, both 29ers, and rigid forks are niche bikes for people who want to add to an already robust quiver of bikes. It would be like teaching someone how to drive in an amphibicar. Let him get a good basic bike, find out what he likes and branch off from there.
Trek, Specialized an others make good solid trail bikes in the <$600 range that have disc brakes and decent middle of the road components. If he spent a little more he could even get a good bike with a frame that was worthy of upgrading components.
http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes...ries/4300disc/
http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/...d=107&gold_ses
Yes, they do have Suntour or RST forks that weight 5 pounds and bottom out over big drops, but they are solid and functional, and generally enhance the overall riding experience, rather than detracting from it. Of course a better fork would be better, but my Fox36 costs more than these whole bikes.
I guess if he wants to get into biking he might as well find out now about the fringe groups in the sport, such as the "single-speeders," the "steel-is-real," "rigid forkers," and the "29ers." They are all well and good, but do not represent the mainstream of the sport.
