Default New to MD, what do I need to know?

Recently moved to Columbia MD area coming from NJ. I'm planning to place an order soon for a 2018 WRX premium with performance package. Heritage Subaru quoted me 29,450 plus tax and tags. If an ambassador has an extra coupon that'd be sweet!

I had some general questions about the area, laws, etc:

I understand inspection is every 2 years, only checks emissions, gas cap, and check engine lights. I assume new cars have 5 years until the first required inspection, like NJ? I couldn't find the info anywhere.

Recommendations for window tint places? I believe window tint is legal at 35%, which I'm fine with. Ive received a couple tickets in NJ for this at $55 a pop. (I have 35% on my current impreza, but all tint is illegal on front side windows)

Recommendations for good shops? Hope to wait until the warranty is over for mods, but who knows lol.

Recommendations for nice curvy driving roads around MD? I work 10min away so I don't get to see much.

Any good local meets around Columbia MD?

Any other things I should be aware of that vary state to state? I'm still not used to pumping my own gas! lol

Thanks!

Welcome.

I know from past experience... You get a quicker reply on the Maryland Subaru Club Facebook group when asking for an Ambassador coupon. Literally took me a few minutes to get a reply from multiple people offering me one when we bought my wife's Legacy.

There is a bi-weekly Nasioc meet in Howard County. There is a thread about that. People from MD Subaru Club meet weekly at the Sonic in Ellicotty City on Tuesdays.

You will still need to get the emissions inspection two years from now, regardless if it is new or not.

In MD you can have tint on your front windows. I would be very surprised if you ever got hassled with 35% on. However, it won't pass a MD inspection (different from emissions) with 35% when you go to register your car in MD. Unless you are able to find a shop that will let that slide.

35% is legal in Maryland (of course front windshield can't be tinted). I have 20% on my '15 WRX and had 20% on my '07 WRX and never got harassed for it.

Technically (someone can correct me) they can not just pull you over for dark window tint. They have to get you for something else (speeding, tag light out, improper lane change, ect) first then they can give you a tint ticket to go along with it. I might be wrong and it might have changed but that's what I remember.

Yeah you are better off not being on Facebook. I just use it to keep up with family/friends that I don't talk to/see often. So much bitching on there. I just keep scrolling lol

+1 - I'd get it inspected first and then get the 20% (or 35%) tint.

When I bought my truck with 35%, I had it certified by the State Troopers at the Glen Burnie MVA. It's separate from the inspection process and has to be done by them. Or has there been a change in the past few years?

That price seems high. Did you call other dealers and Heritage was the cheapest? When I bought my car Heritage wouldn't deal on 18 STis AND, and wouldn't let me test drive without credit check. Call Annapolis, Jones, Auto Nation and the one in Glen Burnie.

They don't inspection until you sell only test Emissions every few years not every year.

D&L tinting is suppose to be the best but I've heard stories. I go to Rim Source Motorsports in Baltimore City. Cheaper than D&L and they stand by their product.

That's easy IAG!

All the places I know are up here in Baltimore. Police don't look the other way like canyon runs in Cali. Watch out. If you wanna have a fun drive buy a bike. I'll ask around and get back to you if I hear from anything good down yo way

Sorry, let me clarify, if you go to a tint shop and ask for 35%, you should specify that you want 35% total. I got my windows tinted with 35%, then later on went to sell the car and it failed inspection. I don't know if it was because from the factory the windows already have a very very slight tint on them or if the tint shop I went to screwed me over. I was at an MVA and watched the trooper measure it with a light meter and it was showing 30%, which caused it to fail inspection...that being said now I have 20% on my car and have never been hassled. I think a trooper can pull you over for dark tint specifically if they really want to, I just think it's rare and they will usually tack that on with speeding, moving violation, exhaust noise, etc.

You think $815 under invoice is high? I'm waiting to get a quote from hueberger but not sure if that guy is overwhelmed, haven't heard anything.
Herb Gordon wouldn't even match it, got the impression he didn't believe me on the price lol.
I can ask a couple others.

Good info!

I had a young officer pull me over in NJ for "blacked out" windows. 35%?!
Got a tint ticket only.
The other few Ive received were a result of police checkpoints. One officer admitted that's all checkpoint was checking each car for, as his limo tint ford explorer is parked on the side of the road! Thought that was funny.

Maybe I got my numbers or models mixed up. I was first looking at a CVT WRX Premium and I could've sworn the car was under $30k out the door. Maybe the car was a Limited.. I think all the other information I gave you wasn't BS

Herb Gordon! That's the one in Glen Bernie right? They were the highest number when I called around.

Edit: You from Northern NJ? Do guys up there still shut down the FDR and 87 to race?

Wilkins Subaru is in Glen Burnie.

$815 under invoice isn't bad. Some of the dealers around here won't go below invoice since they know someone will come in and pay that so they won't haggle a ton.

I'd still get quotes from Annapolis Subaru, Wilkins Subaru and Bel Air Subaru (Jones).

The performance package adds about $2k. Premium with no options is probably under 30 OTD.

Most recently was living in south jersey, near cherry hill, so I wouldn't know.

In case anyone is curious, heuberger quoted me:
Total Price Including ($489) Dealer Handling and ($27.20) Colorado State Filing fee $29,429.20
shipping is $900-$950

Again, Premium WRX MT with performance package 32,205 MSRP, Invoice Price - $30,285

Tell me about it! I had a hard time at first pitting dealerships against each other as Wilkins Jones and Heritage wouldn't come off MSRP on 2018 STis. And that's exactly what they said... someone will come in, want a 18 bad enough to pay full price.

You sell those monitors yet? I'm willing to pay asking. No hard feelings I hope. I gotta get a trading station going. Right now I sit in my living room, use my laptop to trade, tablet for research and the TV's on CNBC or Bloomberg.

I bet you that's it. I was looking for cars with no options. I go by money off. I never know what invoice price is real. Where can you find an invoice price that you know is true?

This makes me feel I got a good deal. Thank you for posting. I bought a Ram 2500 for work back in 2014. I got about 15% off MSRP. I tried that with Subaru and got laughed at

Btw its the Heritage in Catonsville, I just realized there's 2. Heading there tomorrow to hopefully place an order. But Idk which color....

WRB ... too common but best color
Pure red... Looks good but I'm gonna stick out like a sore thumb
LBP ... I need to see this in person, I'm still not sure how I feel about it.
Silver... a little boring for a rex
white ... Looks good, but also so many white cars on the road, idk.

I might be a little late but.. I was originally going to buy a red one but ended up with the white. The white has a metallic on it that looks great! I'm so happy with white.

Thanks for that link! Those numbers make it look like I got a great deal..

Nope. You can get stop for tint. Equipment related violations is enough to get stopped (brake lights, headlights, tag lights, cracked windshield, tires, brakes, exhaust, suspension etc are all ero in). There are fines for equipment issues too.

Emissions
They'll snail mail you when you're due for an emission inspection; you don't need to keep track yourself. When you get the notice, you will have several months to get it done. Many locations to choose from. They will plug a scanner into your OBDII port and check to make sure everything is right. They also look under your car with a mirror to make sure you haven't removed or modified your cats.

Window tint:
I recommend Absolute performance window tinting in Sykesville: this is the best of the best in my opinion if you are willing to pay. They do tints for a lot of businesses in the Baltimore area. Even the city paid them to tint and wrap their buses. I've gotten two recent cars tinted here (1 being the STI) with the highest quality, most expensive tint (Llumar FormulaOne Pinnacle) and the work has been flawless. Not a single microscopic bubble anywhere. I would recommend getting the tints done in the winter time where you can get pretty good discounts. You can get side windows and back window tinted but windshield is not allowed. If you are going for totally legal 35%, then you need to specify to them that you want that because the factory windows are slightly tinted. They'll probably use a tool to make sure the total percentage comes out to 35%.

Other things:
- My STI and previous car were tinted at true 35% window tint, meaning the actual percentage is actually lower than that if a cop used a tool to measure. I've been driving in the area for the past decade and never got a ticket for tint even with loud exhausts and that silly wing. I've also had my family's cars tinted at true 35% and they have never been pulled over for tint. That being said, if you do get pulled over, I suggest you roll down all your windows, especially at night.

- Ah yes, Speeding:
- If you get pulled over for speeding <30 mph over the speed limit you can either plead guilty and have points automatically assigned, thereby raising your insurance rates or you can go to court. If you find yourself in this position, I highly recommend you go to court: Maryland frequently gives out something called probation before judgement for simple speeding citations. This means no points on your record but you will probably have to pay the fine and court costs.
- If you get pulled over for speeding >30 mph the speed limit, you are going to face automatic 5 points on your license if you plead guilty, as well as astronomical rises in insurance rates or getting kicked off your insurance coverage. You also will need to take a very inconvenient driver's improvement course otherwise you're license will be suspended. If you find yourself in this position, HIRE A LAWYER and go to court. The court will lower the convicted speed or even give you probation before judgement (yes this really does happen).
If you have other previous serious driving infractions on your record like DUI or reckless driving, PBJ is much much less likely to happen.

Also, if you are driving in Virginia, don't speed.
