Default Acceleration, not speed, behind BMW diesel launch in U.S.

Quote:
German luxury carmaker BMW is rolling out in 2013 a new range of sporty new diesel sedans in the United States, aiming to attract drivers looking for vehicles that allow them to savor speed while relishing fuel efficiency. The new range of sporty diesel sedans will complement the carmaker’s sole diesel vehicle in the US market, the X5 xDrive 35d sports utility vehicle. BMW hopes the new range of diesel vehicles will move more consumers to prefer them. Diesel-powered vehicles offer around 25-percent better fuel consumption than conventional cars, but German carmakers like Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz have been having a hard time making them popular in the US, due to a poor image, higher fuel prices compared to gasoline, and a dotted filling station infrastructure.

In an interview with Reuters, Ludwig Willisch, president of BMW of North America, remarked that the X5 diesel is selling “like hot cakes,” thus helping them ascertain that there would be strong customer acceptance as long as they have the right product. He also divulged BMW’s next step after rolling out the new diesel sedans in the US -- launching a four-cylinder diesel in the 3 Series, as well as a six-cylinder diesel in the 5 Series this year.
According to Willisch, around a quarter of the 56,800 X5 SUVs that BMW sold in 2013 were powered by a diesel engine, making the SUV the No. 2 diesel vehicle in the US. The cheaper Volkswagen Jetta TDI holds the spot as the top-selling vehicle in the country. Willisch was head of the group's sales activities in Europe, where diesel penetration surged from just over 20 percent in 1997 to 56 percent in 2012, thanks partly to a more beneficial tax treatment in many European countries.

Pretty much this. Diesels can be loads of fun. The more coming to market in the US, the better. Now if we can just do something about the outrageous disparity between gas and diesel prices right now.

It looks like the person that wrote the article forgot that BMW had been selling the 335d for at least 2 model years (MY2010, MY2011). It took BMW this long to realize that entering the market with a very expensive 3 series Diesel was not the best of ideas.
They should have started with the 318d, 320d or maybe 325d from day one.

Diesels can tune extra HP and torque without engine damage as very strong components. Turbo boost makes lots of power. Think many will be happy stock as run strong.
BTW the BMW X5 D is best SUV out there as drives like a sporty car.

I think gas prices will have to go up again and stay up for these to be viable, unfortunately. The price difference is too great to ignore.

That statistic sounds bogus to me. First of all, 2013 isn't over yet and there's no way that more diesel X5s are sold than VW Golfs and Passats. There are also three domestic diesel trucks that are quite popular too.

Honestly, I don't completely understand the point of the performance oriented diesel for the USDM at this point. Diesel is unfortunately such a niche market here that people primarily buy them for MPG, towing, and reliability (in that order?) For example, if I wanted to spend 50 grand on a 3 series that's fast, I'd buy a 335i. The performance is substantially better and the mileage isn't really that far off from the 335d.
