Quick question!
Hey guys,
I just got my car a few weeks ago (2004 wrx), and I am curious how to intake works exactly. My car is in the shop, so I cant really get in there and check it out for myself. I was wondering... So, air follows the big obvious duct into the passenger side fender.. Then from there goes where? I was guessing into the intake silencer, then into the intake? If thats the case, has anyone completely removed the silencer and let it freely grab air from the wheelwell?

Intake scoop>silencer elbow>airbox>inlet tube>turbo>intercooler>intake manifold
(There's a handy illustration around somewhere) The silencer people often remove or modify for sound. You can buy a replacement elbow that makes sure air continues to flow freely from the scoop to the box, or remove it all together. Intake FAQ |

I was basically asking about how it gets into the airbox.
But I was holding back. The real reason for my question is this.. There is a company that makes parts for mini coopers... Called Defenders of Speed (DoS) They make an AWESOME intake. If there is a pre-cut hole in the fender, maybe it would be easy to mod one in there? in the mini's they grab air from the cowl. Which is pressurized at speed. Makes a whistle under WOT. Sounds exactly like a supercharger. Here is the intake on the car: Here is the piece that attaches to the cowl wall: It has a K&N style cone filer in the black piece. |

Read the link I gave you. If you touch the intake on these cars, you need a specific tune for it. The stock intake you have on there is good for well over 350 whp.

I know I would need a tune, but I would love to have that unrestricted airflow without taking in hot air from the engine bay. Even if its not going to do much.
Or let me rephrase that. Even if I can not use it, I would love to see this become a solution for these cars with FBO+ more |

You're not getting hot air though, the scoop is getting air from the front of the hood. And your example is just that, sitting in the engine bay with hot air. Scoop or not for the mini, it will still see hot air from the motor.
And if you want some fancy filter case then make one, that's the only reason it makes sound. |

OP you have a turbo. Putting any type of aftermarket intake on it will open up the turbo sound. You do not need a filter off another car to make a "whistle" sound. Your car already has the equipment to make "whistle" sounds. Why would you want your turboed car to sound like a supercharger anyway?
If that doesn't work then maybe you would like one of these. Super sweet turbo sounds I mean just look at that cost savings! You would be stupid not to buy one. |

First off, let me point out that the cowl area on the mini is not hot. Second, The reason why I like it, is that its on open filter design, but shielded from the heat. anyways, to each his own. I was just curious. Thanks
