Default What to swap into a 97 2.5gt

So right now I actually have two 97 2.5gt's. One is totaled because the whole car is tweaked but the engine and drive train are just fine only has 60k on it. The other car I basically bought just for the body, it has 160k on it but still runs just fine.

I would like to turbo the car but understand that the stock block will not hold anything above 5-7 lbs.

So far I think it looks best if I keep the stock DOHC heads so the wiring is a lot easier, but as far as the block goes I'm still up in the air.

My options seem to be:
EJ20T out of a WRX- not enough displacement

EJ22T getting better and seems like a better block overall from what ppl say also probably cheaper because it would be a little older.

EJ25T out of an STI- probably the most expensive option but I would love to still have 2.5L of displacement not to mention 350hp seems feasible with some head work.

What do you guys think? I dont mind spending some decent money if its worth it. I am also not new to turbos/performance work, I am just new to subarus. I am sick of FWD ha ha.

Thanks,
-Mike

The swap that will end up being cheaper down the road would be an STI or WRX swap instead of a hybrid motor...It would be more reliable, and if you got a Version 8, it would be almost 350 (I've seen anywhere from 325-350 CHP) horses right out of the box. The only thing with any of the STI swaps would be the wiring. It's alot of work, but it is really worth it.

Whatever swap you end up doing is going to need alot of wiring. And don't let the 2.0 Displacement get to you. The JDM Version 8 (with the Twin Scroll Turbo) will suprise you on how it runs.

Mike

I think you will like a WRX motor, then do the usual upgrade path. A ver7 or 8 sti motor would be cool and the US STI has the fly by wire throttle to think about

At this point I allready have the DOHC wiring in my car because thats how it came stock. Would there be much wiring at all with the STI swap? I dont think I would need to do a harness conversion at all if I have a good fuel management system.

I will not be using a stock turbo, up pipe, down pipe, or any of that. And I will definatly be using a stand alone fuel management system, anyone use the AEM EMS on subarus?

About how much are some of the STI blocks going for? No tranny no harness or any of that. All I need is a good strong block with good internals.

Oh and my eventual whp goal is 400. I understand that will be pushing it with stock internals.

I've allready done that in a civic with a 1.8L integra engine, it shouldnt be that hard with a subaru.

The engine you have in the car is completely different, even the wiring. If you want to do a reliable swap you'll take the time to put in the proper harness so the engine can run off of the factory ECM. Subaru's are totally different than Honda's in the wiring department. Each year they changed something and most of the ECM's are totally different.

I'll post some pics of exactly what is involved in the wiring department. I am doing the exact same thing to a 99 Legacy GT Sedan right now. We've done a 1990 Legacy, two 2002 WRX's, a 2003 TS, and We're getting ready to do a 1986 Subaru GL Wagon

yay! for member numbers

1 a usdm ej20 will be the easiest and due to the aftermarket support it by far the best way to go
2 it will provide plenty of HP
3 you will probblay spend close to $20k to get a 400 whp legacy

For those of you that have done swaps like this, how different are the sensors from my 2.5 block to the EJ257 block. I dont care about anything in the heads or IM just on the block itself.
