Default New to the forum, Hello fellow Subaru owners

My name is Ian, I'm a 27 year old from Vermont. I've pretty much been diggin the Honda scene for most my life, I've owned 6. Just bought my first Subaru. I have cousins and uncles who are really into rally and the Subaru world so I've driven a few and done some pretty extensive repair work on some as well (Clutches on a 91 Loyale and 97 Impreza). I'm trying to like, orient myself properly with this thing lol, it's a 2000 Impreza Outback Sport 5spd w/ the SOHC, Phase 2, EJ22 motor and shes got 142k on the clock. I paid right around $1,500. It was originally from California. So far I've done some minor work:
  • Valve Lash Adjustment
  • Re-Tensioned Alternator and P/S Belt
  • Duralast Gold Spark Plug Wires
  • Painted Wiper Arms
  • Refinished/Painted Steel Wheels
  • Clutch Cable Adjustment
  • Lubricated Clutch Cable and Pedal
  • ACDELCO A/C Tensioner / Idler Pulley
  • Brake System Bleed
  • Rear Drum Brake Adjustment
  • Re-Secured Front Lower Splash Shield
  • Transmission Oil Change (75W-90, 3.7qts.)
  • Oil Change (4.2 Quarts, 10W-40, Castrol GTX High Mileage Synthetic Blend)
  • Duralast Gold Right Front CV Axle-New
  • Rear Wheel Bearings (L and R) by C.A.R.S. of Waterbury
  • Valve Cover Gaskets
  • Duralast Left Front Lower Ball Joint
  • KYB Excel-G Front Struts (L and R)
  • Duralast Left Rear Wheel Cylinder
  • Fuel Injector O-Rings (Inj. #1 and #4)
  • 20" and 18" Duralast Winter Windshield Wipers
  • Winter Tire Changeover by C.A.R.S. of Waterbury
  • Vermont State Inspection by C.A.R.S. of Waterbury
  • DC Sports Stainless Universal Muffler
  • AIRTEK/WELLS Driver’s Front Power Door Lock Actuator
  • Rear Differential Oil Change (75W-90) Lucas
  • BLAZER 13” (24-3W LED) Light Bar
  • Opt7 FluxBeam X LED Headlights
  • BOSCH Knock Sensor
  • Fail-Safe by MotoRad Thermostat and Fel-Pro Gasket
  • I threw on a cheap, Pilot shift knob from autozone to get rid of the horrendous knob that was on there (you shoulda seen this thing, clear blue plastic and chrome, like goose head style, omg anyway)
  • Green LED gauge cluster bulb swap: (See my first how-to here: https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho....php?t=2860047)

Its had the timing belt done @ like 90k and a clutch and flywheel @ 105k. I'm looking good on the headgasket so far, no sludge in the radiator, under oil cap or in coolant overflow tank. Externally, the areas near the headgasket seem dry, are there certain motors that are more prone to failure?

Here is a list of the cars I've owned/own:
  • 01 Honda Prelude 5spd (Current Daily Summer Car)
  • 03 Honda Accord Sedan 5spd
  • 96 Honda Civic Coupe 5spd
  • 91 Acura Legend
  • 98 Toyota Tacoma Extra Cab SR5 V6 5spd
  • 94 Honda Accord Sedan 5spd
  • 94 Acura Integra LS Coupe 5spd

My two dailys:

Well I guess that about does it, Thanks guys

-Ian

Thatís a great car and it will treat you well. I had a 99 that lasted well over 190k until it got hit. The head gasket isnít as big of an issue on the 2.2 motor as they were on the 2.5 in my experience. Just keep oil in it and keep the tires the same size and youíll have it forever. My friend sold his with 240k and we still see it driving around.

Hey my names Zach and I am also new to the forum. I recently purchased a 2014 STi hatchback and I love it! I too previously owned a 5 speed prelude and it was a great car. I recently sold the prelude and it was tough to part with but im ultimately happy with the STi. I wish you the best in your Subaru journey!

Thank you guys for the kind comments and positive thoughts. Just got the car registered here in Vermont yesterday and took it on its maiden voyage today. Man Subaru powertrains are cool, real interesting power delivery and gearbox feel.

Im not sure what to think at this point but I did find maybe 2-3 oz. Of white milky fluid in the engine oil when I drained it. I beleive the car had about 7 or 8k mi. Though on the oil that was in it so idk how bad it is yet but it looks like a next winter or winter after, need for a change of the headgaskets, dang

Default Yeah I'm new too

I just picked up a 2013 Impreza Wagon, I already love it. I have some questions about the CVT though, like how would engine mods affect the CVT and are there any other tips y'all have?

Yup sound like there is a head gasket problem for sure. Don't wait too long though. It will get more painful for the pocket book the longer you wait. I'm looking to be getting another subie after many years of un fun driving. 98 Outback sport. How many miles do you have on yours?
