Sounds like you blew a hose or created a boost leak. Check all hoses first before you get to crazy.

Alright. I'll check. Should I do a pull and log to see what it could be after I check? But I'll start simple first.

Don't do any pulls until you find out what is wrong. You could do much more damage.

If you are willing to try and tune it we would take a shot at it. I have some experimental stuff from my B9. You would just have to be willing to provide feedback and understand it would be a project that will take some time to perfect.

Pay attention to details on exhaust systems. Some of them are not true 3in systems, others have 2.5in flanges that open into a 3in. Some cobb systems taper down at the muffler, etc, etc.
If your running a stock turbo then looks and sounds may be all you need to worry about. Downpipes are very important to pay attention to. We have actually swapped down pipes around on the same car to test different ones. There can be noticeable differences in spool times between various pipes. Power wise I cannot say for sure without a dyno. The best spooling downpipes we have found are the really large turboxs bellmouth or the invidia divorced pipe. Worse pipe so far has been the ebay knock offs that use blocking plates or ones that are just 3in pipe straight out. |

The downpipes that look like the HKS (blocked wastegate) work great for when you do an external wastegate setup but not so great for internally gated, bellmouth or divorced downpipes are going to work great but that is depending on quality of manufacture , alot of the eBay knock offs I've seen are crap

understanding terminology
I have just purchased my first ever wrx sti and I am very uneducated on most aspect of the car and the terminology. I would appreciate any tips or info any one can share. For instance, what exactly is a cat-back exhaust? I understand the exhaust part, it's the cat back part that has me guessing. Does this mean that when installing the upgraded exhaust that you permanently removing the catalytic converter? Please forgive me, I don't know much yet but I learn quick. Is there anything special i need to know about the car when it comes to driving it in the winter, other than your basic winterization and change out to siped or studded tires? I live in Fairbanks alaska and as most Alaskans know we can easily see 50 below for a week or two at a time. Also I am looking for advice on some basic mods for the car, like air intake, and exhaust, and basic chip programing upgrade packages. And finally the fuel issue, with the car in stock mode and running premium pump gas, do I still need to add an additive and if so what kind.

Looking to get a Grimmspeed EBCS and they require a tune. How do I go about the tune. I currently am using a Cobb AP Stage 2 tune.
Thanks, Dustin |

Tripster,
We can do that for you no problem. Do not try to install it without a tune though the boost control duty cycles will be about 30% over what you need and can cause some serious over boost. |

Hey Seth,
My car is arriving here in early October, and I'm looking into switching in a VF39 with supporting mods. Can you do a tune for me. Mod list is: 04 WRX, 3" Catless Exhaust, VF39, STi pinks, FMIC, Perrin Turbo Inlet w/ Cobb Short Ram. |

Is a wideband needed for a tune? Thinking about picking this up: http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/products/MTXL.php
But would rather spend on other other areas if it's not needed. |

Seth, just did a pull yesterday where I hit 21.5 psi boost in 3rd gear @ 5k rpm. Fuel cut and CEL popped saying external wastegate solenoid a range/performance. Just been running the Cobb AP stage 1 tune. Would getting a specific tune help solve this overboosting problem? Currently running Invidia 3" cattback, and K&N typhoon SR, stock turbo.

You do need a wideband to tune your own car... Having a permanently installed wideband gauge is a good idea for a number of reasons. Being able to see your AFR allows you to see problems such as, boost leaks, vac leaks, fuel system issues, ignition problems, etc. The only problem with wideband gauges is the sensor which has a short lifespan. Most innovative products use a very common wideband sensor that you can get locally however for about $90.

The over boosting issue may be what is referred to as "boost creep". True boost creep is a mechanical issue and cannot be fixed with a tune, however you can be tuned to handle the additional boost as long as its not excessive. Typically with a car like yours and those mods you would benefit from a good custom tune. You may also want to try switching to the Cobb AP stage 2 tune for a quick fix maybe.
Keep in mind there are many possible causes for your over boosting including faulty or failing components or boost control line leaks or breaks. Quote:
