Question AV Sport - Open Class Rally Car

This car is the one that is leading the US rally championship ..... seems to have enough and reliable power. Reading at the web site I found that it uses:
- APS intercooler ( from the pictures it seems like a TMIC )
- Unichip Engine Managment ( any antilag feature ? )
- Steel internals
- gas flowed head
- 40 mm "open class" air restrictor

and mentions a "ball bearing turbo" ..... does anyone know what turbo they are using.

The results seem to be very good:

360bhp / 400 ft/lbs torque

obviously the major upgrade this rally car has is it's driver David Higgins.

I'd be curious also to discover which turbo they use

Nope .....

I would like to know what kind of turbo can give u 360hp with such a nice torque figure, and still have enough low end power to be used in rallying ..... and also to stand antilag .....

I dont think theres a turbo out there that handles antilag for more than a race

I am fairly confident that there is no antilag on the AVS cars. and as stated above, do not base your part decisions on a reace team. the race team has a much larger budget than you do and probably does a complete teardown and partial rebuild of the motor/turbo every race or every other race. winning race motors are usually built to last one event...

The car runs a Pectel ems with antilag and has a custom FMIC.

This is the car i was checking out when it was here in phx.

From what i understand it's a 2.0 with something done to heads
i can't remeber but it has some 2.5 liter stuff on it.

When i saw it still had the cobb tmic and a ihi turbo.

i asked them about the tmic and fmic and they said the only
reason they would switch it to a fmic is for pulling the tranny
makes it easier and faster, but he said since they put the new 6 speed in they had no more broken gears problems.

But that was after they went thru 5 trannys including upgraded
gears for some later

As the engine supplier to the AV Sport team, I may be able to share some insight:

1) Due to regulations regarding engine displacement versus restrictor size, the car no longer uses the 2.5L engine we supplied to them last year. This year's engine is based on a EJ20 block of unspecified displacement.

2) The engine does not receive a rebuild after every race. While we're more than willing to do this, it's not practical with the schedule they run nor is it necessary. We recently did a simple tear-down inspection of the engine last week after this first half of the season simply to make sure all was well after a few sessions of overheating from front-end damage and all was in perfect condition. Due to the fact that EVERY rally counts this year, we've focused heavily on reliability and not simply outright, unreliable power. A DNF is much worse than 2nd place.

3) The turbo used is currently confidential but it has not suffered a failure yet this year. We went ahead and changed it but that was more of a safety measure than anything else.

4) As stated, the car is now running a Pectel system to allow for Anti-Lag and a few other features. We didn't have a problem with the Unichip, however it's not a pure-bred rally computer and if you want to compete with the top teams, you need a more motorsports-specific solution.

Glad to see some of you noticing how the AV Sport car has one the last three SCCA Pro Rally events besting all the factory teams. It's a very well organized team run with alot of heart, not alot of money. They really do appreciate any and all support you guys/girls can show them at the events.

Regards,
Trey Cobb.

Nice to hear from Trey .....

Yep it is really impressive to have won the first three events considering that there are 3 work teams (Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Subaru).
The AV Sport WRX is US prepared while obviously the oficial SUBARU WRX is UK prepared.

Still would be nice to know what type of intercooler they are actually using and even nicer to have a photo of the engine bay ..... btw the SOA Open Class WRX's use a FMIC.

wondering if this has to do with the undisclosed displacment

not much cooler than standing about 25 feet from it going by and having him lift the on the throttle... bang bang bang

uhmmmm so it sounds soooo different ?????

2.2L don't sound that different, unless they are using equal length extractors .....
