Default Knocks at idle.(06 WRX)

Hi everyone,

I bought my 06 wrx two weeks ago.

I've felt the occasional knock at idle. I put 93 gas on her.

Is this normal?

thanks

It's a subie and they make funny noises even when they are running fine. Don't sweat it.

the CEL would go off if it was knocking. Car feels mad shakey and should. now get the car moving, wrx's shouldn't be idled.

Subarus' don't make funny noises, just a different kind of noise. WRXs' shouldn't be idled?? I never heard that WRXs or any car short of a full race car should not be idled.

How new are you to cars? Every vehicle I have ever driven has a slight shake at idle occasionally. Combustion isn't perfect, the ECU is constantly adjusting to keep the engine at the same rpms.

Drive a high end car and you'll change your outlook...I used to work next to a BMW dealer and I would consitantly hear someone trying to start a car thats already running (that grinding sound) because they couldnt tell the motor was running...

.....

You wont have knock at idle even on the worst gas, well within reason. Generally you cant feel knock considering it usually happens at high rpm and high speed. Audible detention sounds to me like a BB in a coffee can, its MUCH easier to hear then feel. And even then you can be experiencing knock without hearing it. Plus the car can see knock before you can and will warn you with a CEL, it will also try to pull timing so you'll have severely reduced power....

What your experiencing is referred too as the "Subaru Shake". Let me guess it will feel smooth and every 5-20 seconds you feel a wobble that shakes the car?

Although I'm not completely sure what the imbalance is, its perfectly normal in our cars. 2.0 and 2.5....

If you read the litature on the Impreza subaru will make it sound like this boxer design is absolutely perfect and balanced and you could never tell its running. When in reality its noisey and not very smooth. Nothing to worry about though, you'll have 150k miles on it and it will still be doing the same thing...

Thanks for the insight CynicX. I feel better knowing that I'm not alone in this and that it doesn't have anything to do with the performance or reliability of the engine. Has Subaru said anything to address this before?

From what I know people that have mentioned something to the dealer were told its normal...

When I got mine I noticed the shake and noise and although I read on here time and time again that its normal I still had to goto the dealer and check. Except when I went I didnt show them my car I wanted to check another new car they had on the lot. And sure enough it sounded EXACTLY the same....

Go try it out, the salesperson will probably be glad to put your mind to rest...

Also always run 93 octane.....

No it won't, because not hearing the motor is different than feeling slight variations in combustion. The subaru's most likely are easier to feel because of different motor mounts and the block is so small there isn't much metal to absorb the vibration.

I will admit that vibration in the Subys is more noticable. I can feel the individual igntions through my shifter if I am paying attention. I kind of like it that way though.

Whooo. My 2000 Forester IS SMOOTH. I often times must look at the tachometer to see if its running. I've found it is the smoothest after a hightway run of several miles.

i guess it depends how much its knocking...

i never saw a CEL when my engine would knock when it was stock, but it was knocking because i was using MOBIL gas! when i switched gas, to CHEVRON, 76, and SHELL, it never happened again...
