It took me about 2 hours, and I had about a 40 pound camera pack (I brought all my camera junk) - just be slow and steady and take breaks and you'll make it fine. The thought of hiking in the dark made me anxious and nervous too, but it's so beautiful and the sounds and sights of the Mt. Bachelor road and lift crews remind you that you're not far from civilization. Just do it - but wait for a clear night and have plenty of warmth for your feet and hands. It's super easy that it's just uphill from the parking lot - so you really can't get lost. Instead of being freaked out, I felt like I was on a different planet and it was really beautiful - particularly when I got above the big trees and into the snow and wind-blasted/stunted pines. Have a good headlamp and a back-up flashlight with fresh batteries.

My biggest piece of advice is to scout the trailhead the day before and find where the snowshoe trail has already been laid out. Otherwise, you'll be floundering in the deep snow in the dark and won't make it far.

Had to take xmas pictures for the family now that we have a 4 month old... 800 shots to get like 6 or 8 decent prints. Infants are not exactly photogenic.

Here's another shot from my series on the last page. This photo shows the South Sister (composite volcano) on the right, and the shadow of Tumalo Mountain (a shield volcano, and the mountain I was standing on) on the left. I like this shot because it shows the profiles of both types of volcanoes in one picture side by side.

Oh I have snow shoed up already. During the day and from the south side which goes through some flats. Was about 6 miles round trip. Followed some mountain lion tracks on the way up. I didn't get to full summit it as the clouds were coming in thick. I blazed my own trail straight through the woods. I was maybe 100 yards from the top. I'll have to go back at a more favorable time of day. I have a good headlamp and some winter gear and shoe rentals are only 15 bucks for 24 hours, with poles too. I'm looking forward to some summer sunrise shots.

Thanks for the advice tho. And once again awesome shots, me jelly.

Ah, ok. So it's the same, just a bit darker Things feel so much different going up in the dark than coming down in the light.

With the way the snow was the other day though, you wouldn't want to blaze your own trail. The snow was so powdery that when I was off-trail, I was sinking about a foot with each step, which was aerobically challenging, to say the least (pretty sure my heartrate was about 150 bpm).

Yeah when I went up it was pretty hard pack. The steep stuff was hard to gain traction on without sliding.

I have a green color version of these MSR Lighting Ascents - the traction doesn't get much better. Aluminum tube shoes are better for flat travel but these excel at slope traction and they're really lightweight.

This was a picture I took when I was 15 years old. I was on a vacation with my family in Hawaii and we took a tour of these (Japanese?) gardens. I had this standard point and shoot camera and thought this would be a picture I needed to take before I left. It's still one of my favorite pictures ever.

That's exactly what I rented. It was hard pack with a soft slush layer on top. The climbing bar is very helpful

i'm basically never a stickler for plumbness, but two things conspired on this one to make me bring it up: 1) it's an arch shot and 2) the closer it is to being perfect the more it bothers me!
