first: 2009 = 2008 for you
second: http://wrxfanatics.com/blog/2008-parts/full-parts-list/ (most of those suspension parts will work. ask first about the front sway bar though sedans are shorter than the wagons (like in your case))
third: do a search. for basic stuff, try high flow air filter or the hybrid intake depicted in this thread (for the love of god do not install a cold air kit), 2.25/2.5" exhaust, lightweight crank pulley, lighter wheels, better tires, and remove some weight. thats all you can do now for staight line performance, however if your bold you can look into open source tuning (tactrix cable + ROM Raider (no maps really available yet for 08-09)) or the N/A accessport thats coming out, the new delta cams coming out, and headers/ high flow cat. past that your looking at port & polish, big valve jobs, full heads, internals, basically as high as you want to go. be warned that you can spend a good $5k just on the engine, and still have much less horsepower than a stock STi.

hope this helps

Thumbs up '09 Impreza Tips Reply

Thank You. I thought 2008=2009 but I never got any confirmation. I will look into that website and the other tips you gave. Do you think the horsepower gains and fuel efficiency are worth the cost? Or am I beating a dead horse?

i intentionally tried to make a short ram intake instead of a hybrid to see what kind of results i got. as it stands right now williaty's observations on older models still applies to the 08-09 as well. i can think of no other reason why i'd still be getting check engine lights at low rpms or at idle other than a large spike in the maf readings. the car is brand new, so it's safe to rule out a bad o2 sensor and i've sealed everything with silicone and even moved the maf around.

my little experiement seems to suggest that the spike at low rpms still exists and as such i'll be converting to a hybrid setup. i think it's important for people to actually go out and try it instead of just assuming.

gains are worth the cost to an extent. bolt ons will produce noticable gains for reasonable costs. if you REALLY want to save money you could even try and find a used exhaust, just make sure it's stainless steel. hybrid intake, exhaust, headers, light weight pully, etc are all worth it. for suspension some stiffer springs and a sway bar are definitely worth it. i have also found that a short throw shifter and new shifter bushings are a worthy investment as well. be patient, do research and shop around a lot.

for a better answer i'd need to know exactly what your goals are. also, fuel efficiency tends not to increase with more mods for me because I love the sound it makes

the best value: sway bars. IIRC, your car has NO rear swaybar. bumping this up to a 19mm one is night and day. seriously, it changes it from "lifting up the back of the car" to "carries speed through the turn"

So true. I just put the OEM WRX bar on my 2.5i last month. Night and day stuff.

Cool

My goals are to increase horsepower, added torque, increase fuel efficiency if possible, and tighten up the suspension for a more stiff and sporty ride. I am already considering sway bars both front and rear, short throw shifter and intake. anybody know anything as far as chips go? do they void the warranty?
thanks.

'chips' dont work, they just make your engine run pig rich. if you want a 'tune' then your options are:
Piggyback (Perfect Power 6, maybe Pro Sequential ECU)
Reflash (the N/A accessport that's coming out in Feb., or maybe the I-speed if they work on our model)
Open Source (buy a tactrix cable, use RomRaider, and tune it yourself or have someone else make a map for you)

I've got the waggon. If I put one in would the cross-bar go across the top of the floor in the rear or under it? I'm having trouble picturing it and wondering if it interferes with anything.

Thanks.

I have a feeling you're thinking of a strut tower brace, a very different component.
A sway bar (or stabilizier bar) mounts in four location, two to the body that allow the bar to bend, and a connection to each sides suspension. The sway bar transfers spring tension from one side to the other, allowing the car to have it's springs and dampers setup to keep the tires on the road (read soft) and still limiting body roll.

I finally took some time to take the milk jug off. If you are wondering what that is, look for the pictures on page 2 of this thread.

It really is just a milk jug. This is no snorkus, in fact I think we should call it the milk jug. It has no channels/ducts or anything that would lead to believe it has a purpose other than noise reduction. That being said...

I took mine off and drove around for a few days. Not cool; you get some crazy noise going up from ~2000rpm through to 3000rpm - 4000rpm depending on engine load. The sound finally levels out in the upper rpms. Its so loud in the cabin that I could hear it distinctly from my cat back exhaust. Thats really saying something. Its not a awesome noise either, I remember doing a Ganz flow intake (straight tube to air box) on my brother's old 2001 RS, that sounded cool. This just sounds weird, and the sounds kinda vibrates too...However, I didn't notice any negative side effects, no bogging or hesitation in the low rpms.

I put that sucker back on after a couple days because I just could not stand it any longer.

there is just no logical scientific reason why it wouldn't suffer from the same problem as the 05-07's. you should do a test with logs.

there is a logical reason to doubt it. some obvious changes have been made to the intake system and possibly some subtle ones. the symptoms i got certainly do support the existence of the same problem in the newer models. there really wasn't anything to lose in testing a short ram intake because it can easily be converted to a hybrid. at the very least i've collected some, hopefully, useful observations that allow us to say more definitively that the problem has carried over rather than just assuming.

i would log if i owned the hardware, but i was under the impression that it wasn't available for the 08+ yet. is that right?

the hardware is available, its just that no n/a owner with an 08/09 has sent the RR guys a image of their rom to disassemble as far as I know. So until they get a rom to take apart, they wont have any def's for the 08/09 n/a ecu's.

Default I did this as well.

After seeing this post I tried this as well and so far so good. I have a 2005 Subaru Outback 2.5i, bought the intake kit listed and installed it a few days ago. only took about 30 minutes. The 05 only has 2 hoses instead of three so I used one more vacuum cap from the set of 3 on the 3rd hole and then clamped it. I also used the hoses that came with the kit and they fit so I did not have to use 3 brass hose barbs and 8 clamps to connect the hoses together. I only had to use 5 clamps and one brass hose barb. The clamps that came with the original intake did not seem as good as the new ones so I used the ones.

$62 for the intake kit.
$2.29 for the vacuum cap
$2.99 for the hose clamps
$1.09 for the small vacuum cap hose clamp
$13.98 for 2 Silicone couplers
$2.99 for the brass hose barb
$85.34 Total for a new intake system.

I'm having trouble posting the pics (I'm new) but when I figure it out I'll put them on.

I already have a K&N air filter in there so that doesn't count. I drive from SB to Mammoth almost every weekend and so far I have been averaging 27.9mpg (5 trips) round trip driving at around 70-75. Hopefully this will add a little MPG to the drive.

The car seems to drive easier and accelerates faster than it did before. The 2.5i had a pause when you punched it where you would hear the car rev up and then it would accelerate. Now it seems much more instantaneous. There is almost no increase in noise either but I like the new sound better than the stock intake sound.

Hopefully the check engine light won't come on and this will be my new set up.....well except for smog checks ;-).

I'll keep everyone posted on what happens.

Yeah it supports the Automatic 08 2.5i. If I had access to a Tactrix 2.0 cable I'd copy my rom and send it in. Sadly no one near me as far as I know has a Tactrix 2.0 cable. Though I'm hearing rumors in 2 or 3 months we'll have an NA Cobb AP or something similar which I might hold out for.

those rumors would be started by me I talked to Sean S. of Rallitek and he and Surgeline Tuning are working on a 2006+ (maybe 05 too) N/A Acessport.

but yeah right now im saving up my money and waiting to see what happens with this raptor supercharger kit. Supposedly, its like 2 hour install, made to be as reliable as possible, and gives around 217 hp and 250 ft-lbs at the crank with very little lag...

if that doesnt work out, my other plans are the tactrix cable/ LC-1 wideband and do a real tune, or maybe those delta cams that are coming out

you're going to hold out for a $600 very limited, off the shelf only image flashing device instead of using a fully customizable, better fit to your specific car, weather, fuel, elevation, etc, user customizable solution with way more and oodles better support community than the AP? All I can ask is, "Why?" it can do DTC reading/clearing, too boot. if you dont mind plugging in spreadsheets to graph data, the tactrix cable w/ RR is really like a MODIS with even more usability.

Because the AP can also be custom tuned for one. For another I can swap maps based on what I'm doing on the fly without dragging my laptop (I don't own a Netbook, I own a full blown bulky 17.1" screen multimedia laptop) in the car since the Tactrix 2.0 cable does not do flashing from a MicroSD card yet last I checked. I'd like to be able to switch maps based on what gas type I'm using for the day (87 daily driving, 91/93 for the track/autox days) and be able to put the car into vallay(sp?) mode when I bring it into a non-dealer shop for work. Plus RR doesn't support my 5spd 2008 2.5i yet. If they add support for my car and the ability to flash with a PocketPC or Android phone before/if the AP comes out I'll most likely hop on that.

You value convenience as much as i value everything being perfect for my car. But i hear you on the laptop thing, i have a fairly large, super heavy laptop.

Does anyone know if this intake should fit on the 2.2L ej22 N/A engine? I have a 97 Impreza Sport and it's hard to find anything in the way of performance parts for it.

Well I sent Tim a photo of my 06 2.5i ECU and still waiting on a reply but idon't see why this wouldn't work on the 2.5i's. the raptor SC kit that is..becaue Ithink the 05's where still drive by wire if I'm not mistaken I could be wrong in this but if this is possible I'll be ordering my kit very shortly. As well as accessport...this should be good with keeping her as close to N/A as ican get with bolt on.
