perhaps the other way to ask is - when you wire up the NEX harness to the Metra harness, are you just wiring up the amplified speaker level output from the NEX to the speaker leads on the metra harness (which then goes to the HK amp i guess)? i take it there is no amp turn on wire or anything...almost as if there is no amp at all...

i ask first of all b/c i'm wondering how to wire it up, and secondly if you read the amazon reviews on that metra harness, it appears that people with stock amplifiers have to bypass them - which i dont want to do b/c the HK speakers themselves sound fine - its just the head unit that blows
I just wired it up as if there was no amp, so I assume the amp takes speaker level output from the HU.

For amp turn on, just make sure you connect the blue power antenna wire because the Metra harness loops that back to the pin for amp turn on:

Antenna power is 3rd pin down from the right, and amp turn on is the second pin.

This will help to answer your questions:

http://ae64.com/aftermarket-HU-insta...Impreza-BT.htm

There is a 16 pin and a 20 pin harness. The amp turn on lead is in the 16 pin harness.

That is for cars without nav.

yeah if it all works that's gotta be the case...not sure how else it'd be possible for you to be getting good sound if it were wrong somehow. speaking of which - does the HD radio sound any better in your aftermarket HU or is the low bitrate just the name of the game?

anyway, you are an asset to the community. thank you for posting this. i will definitely be tackling the upgrade at some point. i picked the factory nav upgrade b/c i really wanted keyless but that piece of **** Fujitsu system had me doubting my choice since i placed the order. well now i have the car and i love it; i dont doubt my choice but i sure as hell don't doubt my decision to dujmp that garbage system and move forward with a NEX 8000!

The 5000 NEX doesn't have HD Radio and I never listened to HD on the stock system so I couldn't tell you. Sirius sounds better though but I think it sounds better because the NEX overall sounds better than stock regardless of source.

I had HD radio in my last 2 vehicles. One was aftermarket and other was factory. Yes, when you are in range of an HD station, it does sound better. Depending on your stations, the HD can cut in and out on you. Not a big deal as you just loose access to the extra channels and it goes back to sounding like normal FM.

I got the 5000NEX over the 6000 and I couldn't justify the extra $150 for the HDMI port and HD radio. I personally just listen to Pandora while I am in the car. I will probably get a Sirius tuner soon as well. I can't stand FM radio in my area as there is nothing I want to listen to on any of the stations.

I just had 6000Nex installed with SWC, receive call, Hang up call and voice recognition button doesn't work. Could you please confirm if all the swc buttons suppose to work with nex? Thanks

the swc module needs to be programmed correctly is my understanding of that problem.

you probably have something like this in there to make it work:
http://axxessinterfaces.com/index.ph...roducts_id=197

it needs to be flashed to work with your SWC setup

Voice req button won't work. Bluetooth buttons should. Did you update the unit at time of install?

If you did, yours may have not learned the functions automatically. You may have to go through the teach process.

Yes, all buttons work. You might have to reprogram them.

Would the same parts list in the first post work for a 2011 WRX STI with NAV?

Also, might want to read the directions a little on the ASWC-1. All you have to do to get the bluetooth controls to work is one small addition once the module is recognized. Works perfect. You can even assign custom controls if the HU supports it.

If the ASWC-1 was installed in a vehicle previously:
2) Turn the ignition on, the LED will flash once, then go out.
3) Hold down the reset button for 3 seconds and then release it.
4) Perform action required for your particular vehicle as noted in the vehicle info sheet.
5) After a couple of seconds the LED should stop flashing and not light up for 2 seconds. At this point do not push any buttons.
6) After the 2 seconds there will be a series of 7 Green flashes, some short and some long.
7) The LED will pause for another 2 seconds then flash Red up to 11 times (refer to ASWC-1 ledgend).
8) This is the end of the auto detection stage. If the ASWC-1 detected
the vehicle and the radio successfully the LED will light up solid.
9) For vehicles with OE Bluetooth buttons please press “Hang up” or “Pick up” on your steering wheel control after the LED on the ASWC-1 goes solid. If the OE Bluetooth buttons are able to be used, the LED will go out after 3 seconds.
Your OE Bluetooth buttons are now programmed to your aftermarket radios Bluetooth buttons

(aftermarket radio must have Bluetooth capabilities). Tip: If the LED does not light up solid refer to the troubleshooting section.

Metra makes a dash kit for the 2012+ WRX that worked out perfect for me. I didn't reuse the factory mounts and it fit perfect without trimming. I'll try to take some pics this week.
Anyone get the Bluetooth Hang Up/pickup buttons to work? I have ASWC-1 and is pre-program to mute on NEX-7000. I have 2014 WRX i would like to get that buttons to work with Iphone Siri.

This for 2014 WRX fellow who want OEM dash kit, you can buy it from the dealer see pic

Did you update the firmware on the ASWC? Mine work on the 2015, but I did the firmware beforehand. I haven't programmed mute, but the two phone buttons have been working fine with the 4000NEX so I imagine yours should too.

My harness is from ae64, only 20 pin connector the 16 pin connector is not use.

So those of us with the Harman Kardon Nav, is the HK amp separate from the NAV headunit?

EDIT: Found the answer early on in the thread.

This took way longer than I had anticipated, but here finally is my 'parts needed' guide to install an aftermarket HU in Subarus with the OEM Fujitsu Ten nav (including BRZ, Legacy, and Outback, as well as FR-S, GT86, plus other recent Toyotas which use the same "Toyota-style" harnesses):
ae64.com/aftermarket-HU-install-parts-2012FT.htm
It includes answers to many of the questions that have been asked in this thread (e.g., dealing with OEM h/k amp, retain factory XM antenna, GPS antenna, and more).

Cheers!

(and much kudos to yg17 for his work in putting together this thread)

Is it possible to retain the stock GPS Antenna if doing an aftermarket install?

Hey man, thanks for the detailed post - helped a lot. The amazon links you posted for under "What you'll need", are those the exact ones your bought? When you select the compatibility check options for 2015 wrx in amazon it says it wont fit the car.

Edit: never mind, just read the parts needed to install site.

I just bought the nex 6000 and ordered all the items you listed above except the Sirius tuner since you can always just get Sirius online and stream it from your phone. 60 bux for a tuner wasnt worth it IMO. Anyway, I'll post pictures of the wiring for you guys once I get everything in.

YG17, thanks for this write up it definitely helped a lot.

Great writeup, does anyone use the NEX units with Android? I can't get a straight answer if I can share my screen to the device. I want to buy it so I can use Waze on my road trips.
