There's a Nexus One thread, a Droid thread, a G1 thread, etc etc...
What if I want to post something or ask a question about Android that is not related to any one phone in particular? I'm posting it here.

Other Android related threads:
The Droid thread - http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1867362

AT&T finally to get off it's ass and start selling Android devices:

Online search and advertising giant Google marked its official entry into the wireless handset market on Tuesday with the introduction of the Nexus One smart phone that is intended to rival the Apple iPhone. Produced by HTC of Taiwan, the Nexus One will operate on Google's open platform Android system for mobile phones and will be sold directly to customers via the Google web site. (Currently, 59 carriers worldwide offer handsets that operate on the Android platform.) Boasting a 3.7-inch touch screen, a 5-megapixel camera that takes video and still photos, and voice recognition capabilities that permit users to compose and send text messages by voice command, Nexus One will retail for $529 unlocked or for $179 when purchased with a two-year calling plan from T-Mobile USA. The unlocked phone will also run on AT&T's "EDGE" GSM wireless network if the owner possesses an AT&T SIM card. Google expects to market Nexus One through Verizon Wireless and through Vodafone in Europe later this year and hopes to sell the device through additional carriers in the U.S. and worldwide in the near future. Applauding the phone's debut, a spokesman for Google described Nexus One as "an exemplar of what is possible with Android on mobile phones."

Meanwhile, AT&T on Wednesday confirmed its plan to sell wireless smart phones that operate on the Google-sponsored Android platform. Experts say AT&T's decision to market Android handsets in addition to the Apple iPhone testifies to the growing influence of Google in the U.S. smart phone market. A spokesman for AT&T-the last major carrier in the U.S. to add Android devices to its product lineup-acknowledged that his company "hung back and watched the market very carefully" but decided ultimately to market Android-powered devices "when we saw the demand was there." Beginning in the second half of this year, AT&T will sell five new Android handsets that are produced by Motorola, HTC, and other manufacturers. Observing that "AT&T needs another leg to stand on beyond the iPhone," one telecom analyst explained that the Android devices will give AT&T "a well-rounded portfolio."

Also this is pretty... umm... cool? The Motorola Backflip

agreed. The skyrocket = the epic 4g for sprint is what I gather. Makes sense.

also, i found the white, apparently its just the skyrocket in white. Which is fine, as that is the one I'd get anyway.

Because it is the HSPA+ version that supports Tmobile and ATT...and not verizon's LTE.

HSPA+ networks, while incredibly fast are not REALLY 4G, even though providers will tell you otherwise.

Don't worry though, that is the real deal Galaxy Nexus GSM.

Technically speaking LTE isn't 4g either. And HSPA+ in reality is often just a MB/s or two slower than LTE currently is. If you're already on a unlimited data plan that your happy with I wouldn't switch to Verizon for the LTE GN unless the 32GB storage is an issue.

Also: ****ing Verizon, I'm really just a hairs breadth away from leaving them.

how does Sprint's WiMax compare to hspa+? from what I understand it is slower, but they have LTE plans in the future????

Their "any mobile, anytime" calling and unlimited data is very appealing. I have att unlimited currently, but they charge me too much for calling.

~10Mb/s down 1Mb/s up. The upstream is a disappointing hard limit.

but uploading really isn't an issue unless you're sharing files? right? I'm ignorant to these things.

^^ Which means its essentially an Epic, but the AT&T spin is exactly what he said - its bigger than their GSII variant and has 4G.

Sprints GS2 isn't the same as the Skyrocket (Sprint's has the superior Samsung Exynos/Mali). The Skyrocket is similar to Tmobile"s GS2.

My GSII has H+. I think that's about as good as AT&T can get. Pulls data about as fast as my work computer, so that's saying something.

Also, I need an app that will let me scribble notes on my tablet, convert them to text, and give me some way to somehow get them back to my notebook. Company meeting notes of **** that I need to do. I can't seem to get Evernote with Skript to install. (don't have access to work Wifi). It's a thought though. My Script sucks balls though. I can't even underline text with it.

Alright... I'm just starting to pay attention to phones again, as I get a new one in about a month. Price is no object, I'm replacing my OG Droid, and while I like the looks of the RAZR, it seems folks here are all about the Galaxy Nexus. What's the upside of the GN that makes it preferable, and can either or both be used as wifi hotspots? (I tether for home internet and wireless would be preferable). Data and voice are unlimited on a business plan, so that's irrelevant; I kind of like the docking station/lapdock things, but they are not a must-have.

Thoughts?

TIA

the whole Nexus thing, running ICS out of the box, better screen resolution...

Razr has very nice form factor and would likely serve you fine as a phone. The Nexus should be the most frequent updates and doesn't have any manufacturer skin inbetween itself and the Android OS.

The RAZR's screen is borderline pathetic. Other than that, it's a kickass phone. But it's still a Motorola.

So any of you Verizon guys get this.

Some Verizon Wireless Customers Receiving $100 Off Future Galaxy Nexus (No Mailer Required)

Quote:
We told you guys about the $100-off any 4G smartphone mailer that Verizon Wireless was sending out to customers a few days ago. Well, now we've been receiving quite a few reports of some lucky Verizon Wireless customers who were able to snag - and reserve - that $100-off promotion for their future Galaxy Nexus purchase and get this***8230; no mailer required! I know, it sounds crazy and we've been trying to get in touch with our Verizon contact to get all the details but we've been hearing that it could have something to do with getting customers off their old 3G phone and into a 4G one. All it takes is a simple call and you could be grabbing a Galaxy Nexus this holiday season for only $200. Not too bad at all.

Still no word on exactly what regions this promotion is available in with one rep saying only the northeast and midwest but it wont hurt to call and ask Verizon for yourself. A few minutes of your time could save you $100. Good luck!

almost my thoughts exactly, I would add it just feel cumbersome. I have pretty big hands, and I can use it with one hand, but it's tough. people with smaller hands, or women in general, will have to use 2 hands the whole time. I find that to be something I dislike in a phone.

Google's response to Siri is codenamed Majel, could be released by end of year

I wrote about Google's response to Apple's Siri voice assistant several months ago and over the last couple weeks I received further details about the secret project. For starters it is codenamed Majel, which comes from Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, better known as the voice of the Federation Computer from Star Trek.

Majel is an evolution of Google's Voice Actions that is currently available on most Android phones with the addition of natural language processing. Where Voice Actions required you to issue specific commands like "send text to***8230;" or "navigate to***8230;", Majel will allow you to perform actions in your natural language similar to how Siri functions.

Speaking of actions, it sounds like only Google search queries will be included with the initial release, that could come as soon as this year. I say this year because I've heard that engineers at Google X are working around the clock on finishing the first release and the NYTimes previously reported that one product would be released by Google X this year.

December if nearly half over, so a January or February release might be more realistic. Other more advanced features like controlling phone actions and applications with natural language commands are expected to come later.

Google's Matias Duarte had previously given hints about the future of Android's voice actions in an interview with Slashgear. Matias said, "Our approach is more like Star Trek, right, starship Enterprise; every piece of computing surface, everything is voice-aware. It's not that there's a personality, it doesn't have a name, it's just Computer."

I had previously speculated that Google's approach might actually include some kind of animated avatar, but it appears I was way off on that one. However, we still expect greatly enhanced computer voices that sound more human and fluid, thanks to Google's acquisition of Phonetic Arts, which occurred at the tail end of 2010.
