Mine makes a pretty audible buzzing sound for the first few seconds when engaging but quiets down. Still blowing cold too. Not sure what's normal for sound.

I just noticed one day I think a year or two ago that it was making an extremely loud buzzing noise unlike it ever had previously. I know the typical compressor sound but this is definitely abnormal.

I wonder if there's a bearing or something that's bad. I worry about bringing it to the dealer and them not really making any effort to diagnose it and just saying "give us $1200 to replace the compressor + $150 for the initial inspection" when it might just be a $7 bearing or something.

I'll replace it if I have to, but I don't want to have to if there's anything else I can do.

edit: it sounds EXACTLY like this

If you have a set of manifold gauges i would check your pressures, otherwise pay a shop for a recharge and leak test. You might just be low on 134a and the hose connections are prone to leak a little

Yeah come to think of it I have heard of things like this being caused by incorrect pressures.

Should basically any mechanic who works on HVAC stuff be able to do that?

The last shop I went to that installed my summer tires on some used wheels I picked up seemed like they knew what they were doing and weren't pushy for extra services or anything so I emailed them and they said $70. Gotta call them back and schedule it.

What is the best cable to connect to the comm port in our cars? I'm wanting to use FreeSSM and havent found a clear answer other than taxtrix 2.0

For now I just want to read and clear the codes. In the future I would like to adjust/reflash some stuff on my car.

Thank you.

Any $10-20 chinese no-name OBDII reader should be able to connect to an app like Torque or ActiveOBD and clear codes just fine. There's no need to buy a high end one just to clear codes.

I'm having an issue with the rubber surround on my windshield that was replaced by safelite a while back. The rubber keeps popping out after any decent length trip on the freeway, leaves a sticky tar-like gunk all over the roof of my car too so that's... lovely. At least it comes off very easily with goo gone. I'm hearing the best solution is 3m super weatherstrip adhesive. Anything else work well, or any other tips about how to apply it and make sure it stick swell?

The location that did it is on the other side of the country, plus I didn't want to have to wait, and it kind of concerned me that they might use whatever cheap adhesive again so I just ended up going with the super weatherstrip stuff. I'm not sure if a local safelite would have done it, but I don't think I have a receipt anymore so I have no idea if they would have been able to look it up or anything. DIY repair was best for me I guess.

Same, not worth it if it’s working fine. Why bother.

Went fine for me, it was probably about as much effort and time as the spark plugs. You just need to make sure you have the right parts: the filter itself and some bushings or gaskets or something, I don't have the part numbers and if I remember correctly they're not listed in the service manual. I think the service manual insists you do something absurd like buy a whole new fuel pump to replace the filter.

I would bet someone else knows the part numbers you need.

I don't remember if anyone mentioned it here but some other people must have gotten the warranty extension on the electric power steering, right? I've never heard about anyone having a single issue with it so it seems weird, and it's quite late to extend it, especially for the earlier 2012+ models, but I guess it's nice to have that regardless.

Got a letter for it for my 2015. It does seem weird that they're just now calling it out, but 10y on the CVT and now the power steering is nice if either one goes out, I guess. Makes me a bit uneasy and has me wondering about the failure rate of both though, moreso the CVT

Just got the power steering one for my 12 too. Yea I’ve never heard of any issues whatsoever . I have heard that a lot of dealers and Subaru of America will fix any cvt issues upto 150k using the pzev warranty too.

Anyone have suggestions for a driver's seat cover? I have ~3" long gashes on both left and right upright bolster on my driver's side cloth seat due to stuff I keep on my belt.

My '13 has 54k miles, it went to the shop for one wheel bearing making noise. Turns out it needed both rear wheel bearings, rear diff was low, rear pads were 4/32" and rotors were covered in crud. At least I didn't take it to the dealer, they told me when I got my free 53k oil change that the diff inspection at 60k "usually cost around $1k" because they find something wrong and offered to help spread the pain by doing it early.

Default Fixed gearbox

Well, I'm one who did have precisely this problem. Drove this vehicle on salty NY roads for 8 years, and a couple years ago the steering started to get harder on one side than the other. It progressively got worse until it took some muscle to turn L but you hardly had to touch the wheel to turn R. There was a service bulletin out about the problem, but it was not under warranty at that time.

I initially balked at the $1600 cost to replace the box and lived with it for a while, but when my son started driving it, I went ahead and had the repair done by a dealer last December.

I was pleased to receive notice of the warranty extension, I submitted the paperwork, and got reimbursement right away! Count this as a case of Subaru doing the right thing!

Default front brake dust shield?

Can anyone confirm that the front brake shields are bolt-on only? Pretty easy to replace if you get the rotor off?
I was quoted $190 for the part and $156 in labor, and when I look online, I see the part is listed for $25. Sounds like the rear are maybe integrated with the hub and that might be what they were quoting instead.

Scale of 1-10, how important is it to have a good dust shield?

That time of year again, snow tires went on a couple days ago. Snowed a little bit tonight but it melted off the road within a couple hours and I didn't have anywhere to go. I'm always kinda excited to go out for the first drive through the first significant snow when I swap tires.

About a month ago we traded in my wife's 2012 Impreza Sport with 31K miles on it. We were offered $9300. Bought a 2021 WRX base/6 speed.

Happy 10th Birthday!!!

My dealership keeps contacting me wanting to buy my car. I'm not interested.
Took this picture today and shared it with the kids. They got jokes but I don't care Love not having a car payment.

Passenger seat belt broke recently. It won't reel back in. A new one cost over $200. Wasn't expecting it to be that much but this has been a wonderful car over the past decade.

At 330,000 km's on the original suspension, I'm going to be replacing front control arm ball joints and bushings before bringing it in for the next alignment. My suspension guy warned me that the rear toe control bolt usually seizes, and it might need to be cut out, because even if I can get it off with heat, the bushing will get melted. Is that really typical for a rust belt car? Just want to be prepared...
