Just saw a review for the USA legacy and I noticed it comes with the third eyesight camera behind the mirror. Just like the one in the Japanese models that were in the article for testing lane centering. I wonder if that means those will get an update for lane centering and the updating speed range/ turning range for the system (where as the current turns off lane keep assist at turns).

It seems easy enough to be able to buy the upgrade for current models and get a software update to the car maybe? All the screens diagrams are the same and same screen size so it would hopefully be a upgrade for$800 or so for anyone who wants it ? That's my hope anyway!

Probably not upgradeable due to integration of software with various sensors/actuators in the car.

Subaru don't upgrade within model year. They make you upgrade cars. It's the appeal of giving up your current ride. Classic tactic.

Well, they make small cosmetic changes to exteriors and often change radios and colors on interiors. But I agree, never really anything major.

Yea one can hope. It's insteresting that the Canadian model can come with dual climate control and a heated steering wheel, that's in the sport tech which is comparable to the USA limited

Hey guys, I’m coming from the Audi world and looking to jump into a 2018 Impreza sport sedan. My Audi is a 6-speed and I’m kinda over driving manual in traffic so I was looking for something reliable, automatic, and AWD with some nice features. My only concern is with the CVT on this car. I’ve seen some nightmares with other manufacturers but not too much about Subaru. I see they extended the warranty out to 10 years/100k miles so that tells me maybe they know they’re a problem. Anyone care to weigh in on the CVT reliability? I’m looking to buy this car and drive it till the wheels come off. Thank you!

2017 and up introduced us to the 2nd generation of this CVT with revised ratios and a few other things. The warranty extension covered both 2106 (old) and 2017 (new). I think Subaru is being proactively cautious with the new one, in that they are hedging their bets that *if* something should go wrong (with 2017 being the 1st year, sometimes it does), they won't get sued through recalls because (lack of) warranty (using and understanding their track record with high mileage CVTs). By being proactive in this regard, if nothing goes wrong, it's no real loss at all. If it does, "it's under warranty, and we stand behind it." A bit of a PR stroke of genius if you ask me.

No one has said anything has gone wrong with them yet (I have one, my 1st CVT ever, but 8th Subaru) and I have had zero complaints coming from a MT owner (also have BRZ and S2000). I've had lots of rentals with CVTs and this one is a joy to drive, especially with the flappy paddles. Shifts relatively quick, and even better, VERY smoothly, no jerking action... which is great if loaded up in a quick corner... it holds its balance and composure.

The only thing you may not like is lack of power compared to your Audis. My previous car was a Chevy SS sedan. This car does a good job in city traffic and even getting on highways. But passing (overtaking in a passing zone of a one lane road) *quickly* is not its forte. If the car you're passing speeds up (which technically is illegal in all 50 states)? Just have to back off.

Has anyone here owned both the 2016 and 2017 models? I am thinking of getting a 2016 to save some bucks if it is not much different than the 2017. Any major differences?

There is almost nothing the same on both besides the brand and name. Drive both see what you want more.

I would get the 2017 over the 2016 any day. New platform, better drive ability

What he said. I have a 2014 Crosstrek and 2017 Impreza. The Crosstrek is horrid in comparison, just on design and space alone.

If you're trying to save money by getting a used Impreza, you'd still be better off getting a 2017 Impreza. At least the interior isn't almost a decade old (2011 Impreza premiered in April 2010).

Where are you located? I can't find a buyer for my BRZ, so, I may sell my '17 Impreza Sport. (WRB/CVT/33k miles).

don't own but my sis has an 18 sport, great lookin car that handles well but very doggy IMO + never would i own a CVT, thats just me. they are not in the same class of Audi or even VW but they are also a lot cheaper especially if your looking for AWD + as a plus non turbo cars go longer before needing a carbon cleaning, sorry but the 6 yr bumper to bumper warranty is hard to beat + a good time to trade as soon as its almost gone because repairs on todays cars are very costly. nothing made today is without issues but some worse than others, do you feel lucky!!! the more junk aka features the more chance for failure + todays cars that run thru the fancy touchscreen are worse as it is a costly replacement as it controls many things, good luck + happy motoring!

I had a 16 impreza and I have an 18 impreza. I will say the 16 was definitely a nice car, no real complaints about the car itself. The 18 is worlds better though. Both are CVT and the 16 CVT in my opinion was fine, I have no complaints about it. Granted the 16 was a base trim and the 18 is a limited, trim aside they are both great cars. I had no issues with the 16. I will say it doesn't feel as solid as the 18, if you shut the doors of both you'll see what I mean. The 18 needs a more solid shut to latch, the 16 would sound like your slamming it and will break the window. Ride quality was greatly improved, wind noise reduced too.

I own one and I have noticed not only a lack of DIY videos and maintenance help but also finding part numbers. That is, it seems like the 2016 has the 2012-2015 maintenance schedule but the frame of the 2017+.

Case in point. I did the gear diff today and all the 2012-15's videos say I can use a 1/2 inch ratchet head to undo the rear diff. Nope. I had to use a 10mm hex. Barely got that sucker in the fill. Had to hammer it in.

I have had to purchase parts from the dealer to ensure I get what I need as most online retailers seem to skip 2016. Kinda makes me wonder if I am the sole 2016 impreza owner in the world at times.

Cool Customer Service; Dealership vs. SOA

I ask "What does your shipment of 5-doors have to do with my cargo cover? You already said you didn't want to pull one from another car." And like magic, look at that, he found one I can go and pick up tonight!
We had a similar situation, though ours was the 2nd key. 2 weeks we went without one. We had driven an hour+ to get the particular car/$ we wanted, though there was a local dealer. We offered/requested to go to the local dealer, but the selling dealer refused. After a week of being unresponsive, I called Subaru of America. The Customer service rep sounded like a nice young lady, but just parroted the same message from the dealer. The survey reflected all. Loved the other parts of buying the impreza. SOA sent a bunch of goodies/$ to apologize.

Default Improved handling

So adding 245/40/17 Rival tires with a 17x8.5 +44 offset wheel basically weighted the steering wheel just right that it doesn't feel too light anymore. It also feels steadier and much less floaty. Yes I know, wide tires with a stiff sidewall tends to do that. But it really benefits the Impreza considering the OEM 205 wide tire with soft sidewalls + the electric steering was too soft and floaty, and was easily upset... imo, anyway.
Thanks for the info. Lots of love for the quick steering. Was completely fine when it was predominantly my wife driving it. Recent changes have made it my DD, and what I call the twitchy roll has become annoying. I still have my upgraded kart boy end links from my '02 bugeye WRX that I was going to swap in only to find that the sway bar is no longer a traditional modifiable setup. It will probably take some doing to get my wife to agree to upgrading the wheels. I spent $6k on parts and a year installing them at 10 yrs and 150k. Loved the tighter handling but hated getting 10% back when the car was rear ended. Turnin and others don't seem to be doing any upgrades for the new models.

If you have any thoughts on budget mods to tighten the suspension it would be hugely appreciated.

Default Performance

Performance: Let's not mince words, here; the 2017 Impreza is slow. Coming from a WRX, almost painfully so. I knew that going in. I figured I would eventually get used to it (before my first WRX, the most powerful car I ever owned was a 150 hp Neon ACR), and I'm getting there, albeit slowly (see what I did, there ). I just recently turned over 1000 miles on the odometer, and am finally comfortable exploring the upper reaches of the rev range. And you know what? This is the only normally aspirated Subaru 4 cylinder I've ever driven besides the BRZ that doesn't fall on it's face at high rpms. It's no Honda D16 VTEC, but there is a perceptible bump in torque around 3500 rpm when the car "comes on the cam," and it pulls eagerly (if not strongly) to redline from there. The quality of the power delivery is nice; if only the quantity of available power was greater. Handling-wise, I'm still coming to grips with the new car's potential. Compared to the WRX, it feels as though there's a lot more initial suspension movement when you initiate a turn. The suspension seems to firm up quickly after the first ~1/2" of travel, though, and the car has decent grip once it takes a set. This initial movement, when combined with the very quick steering rack ratio, made the car feel jittery to me at first. Over time, I've started to adapt by slowing down my steering inputs. The car seems far less nervous to me, now. Damping is on the conservative side, but only slightly so. Balance is surprisingly neutral, assuming you don't oversaturate the front tires at turn-in by being ham-fisted with the steering wheel.
Thank you for your observations on performance in particular. My '02 WRX Bugeye was rear ended/totaled, and while I like the'17 Premium, I've not come to grips with the "jittery" ride. I'm okay with it being slower (so am I these days), but not so much the handling. I'm not finding much of anything anywhere on upgrades. I did a bunch on my '02 when everything was starting to wear out at 12 yrs and 150k. Looking for something to slip in without alarming my wife. Any ideas?

I've never been able to confirm what's different, but the Sport trim has "tuned" suspension, plus brake vectoring. It handles very well. Aftermarket wheels and summer tires make a difference.

You could get strut mount tower bars from STI, Cusco or Nameless Performance. STI makes a crossmember stiffener too. SPC rear lower control arms for adjusting camber if you lower it with BC Racing, Blitz or Cusco coilovers. I do not suggest lowering springs, which I'm currently on, temporarily.

I'm coming from experience with: highly modified 13 BRZ and 11 WRX, lightly modified 08 Forester XT, stock 05 STI, stock 01 Impreza 2.5 RS coupe.

I have to wonder how much, on the Sport. (I know, stupid question).

I would put these tires that came OEM on the Sport up against the DWS in the same size. Personally, I find them that good. As in, these are the 1st tires that I've ever had as OEM on any Subaru (I've had 9), and the barometer is nowhere near "hate them need to get rid of them ASAP" as with almost every other Subaru. 42k miles on them too. Just as good in the winter (although with 42k miles this year, that may be near an end) as the DWSs too - and 42k on DWS means you're already partially way though the 2nd set, I could never get 30k miles on them.

100%! I finally had to replace my stock tires a couple of months ago. They were so worn that water was dangerous. It kind of snuck up on me because it had been in two accidents last year and I only drove it half the year, so I drove my Crosstrek or Envoy.

Anyway, I replaced the tires with Continental ExtremeContact Sport summer tires. I like them because they are grippy and had them on my BRZ. I haven't been able to break traction yet. I should go to a parking lot they use for autox and see what it takes... And, no, I won't just autox.

All that so say that I would've been fine replacing the worn OEM tires with new OEM ones if I had to. Subie #7, so I too understand the woes of OEM Subaru tires (unless you get the BRZ tS). Crosstrek tires got upgraded to high end Michelin a/s.

Unfortunately, the Sport wheels are fairly garbage and prone to bending easily. If you do Facebook, there's a 17 Impreza owners page that has a few members with mangled OEM Sport wheels that Subaru refuses to warranty. They're the softest heavy wheels I've ever experienced. I replaced them with flow cast Konig Rennform wheels that are much lighter and feel stronger. They took fairly good beatings throughout a lot of construction across the continent. And they're about to take more when I drive out of Alaska down to the west coast then head east in two weeks for the final time.

Yeah. I'm heading down this road too dealing with the service department. They haven't been able to get rid of the vibration (Mass/RI potholes) through a few balances and they keep saying probably a belt broken in tires (i.e. not under warranty). I know it's the wheels (and they say they're fine).

This winter a set of wheels with snows, and then in the summer, good tires. Thing is, I really like the looks of the OEM sport wheels on this car.
