Default Legal/Illegal Street Racing

I'm doing research on Illegal and Legal street racing(street night @ NED) for my Anthropology class and i need some perspectives of other racers for the paper. If some of you guys could give some quick answers to these questions, it'd be a huge help.

1: Why do you street race? If you don't then why also.

2: If you race at the track (NED), what keeps you coming back?

3: Have you ever been busted racing? If so, did it deter you from racing on the street and think more towards racing at the track?

4: How much do you spend annually on modifying your car? (estimate)

Thanks a lot. If you chose to answer, all names will be changed in the final paper and if you'd like me to use a particular alias, i'm open to suggestions.

1.I dont because I dont abide my standards by FATF like some people who street race....

2. So many people die everyday because of wreckless driving just because they want to see if there aluminum wing and ground FX makes them go 200MPH...

1: Why do you street race? If you don't then why also.

I street race for the rush. The adrenalin of a highway launch, and the possability of getting caught. I do not go to orginized street races but running from a light or on the highway is just plain fun.

2: If you race at the track (NED), what keeps you coming back?

I have raced at NED a few times but does not have th same inopertune flair that street racing has.

3: Have you ever been busted racing? If so, did it deter you from racing on the street and think more towards racing at the track?

If you are smart you will not get busted. Open highways or streets... No traffic weaving here.

4: How much do you spend annually on modifying your car? (estimate)

Supra: way too much (15K)
WRX: 4K

1: Why do you street race? If you don't then why also.
I don't street race. It's stupid. No reason to push my car only 80%, when I can go to the track and push it 100% without worry of hitting an innocent person. When I say track, I mean REAL racing, like autocross or track day, none of that drag strip crap.
2: If you race at the track (NED), what keeps you coming back?
Never been to NED, and will never go there (unless on my motorcycle). Otherwise, I like to race because 1> It teaches me how to control my car under many different situations 2> It gives a great rush of moving fast in the car, and 3> Competition never hurt anyone.
3: Have you ever been busted racing? If so, did it deter you from racing on the street and think more towards racing at the track?
Nope. Since I've really never done more than a 0-40mph from a stop light, there's not much to bust me on
4: How much do you spend annually on modifying your car? (estimate)
I spend about $3,000 on my Impreza over the two years I had it. This was the first car (of 4) that I've actually modified.

Thanks a lot. If you chose to answer, all names will be changed in the final paper and if you'd like me to use a particular alias, i'm open to suggestions.

I don't street race but i like to burn (try to) an obnoxious driver once in a while. Guess my ego gets the better of me.
I think I don't street race because I have a street car, not a race car. Driving a street car as if every second counts isn't kind.

2: If you race at the track (NED), what keeps you coming back?

I don't. Drag racing feels like its too brutal on my baby.

3: Have you ever been busted racing? If so, did it deter you from racing on the street and think more towards racing at the track?

No. n/a

4: How much do you spend annually on modifying your car? (estimate)

About $1,000 for the last 6 months and still going steady so about $2,000 annually. This is the first car i've modified.

1: Why do you street race? If you don't then why also.

no I do not. Do I drive above posted limits? yes, but that is different than racing. When you are racing, you're more likely to push the car and yourself past comfort zones (making you more likely to make mistakes), tire capabilities, and driver capapbilities. Why I don't street race is simple, it is moronic, life is not like the movies where everything just simply works out. In my line of work, EMS, I see what morons cause when either street racing or just simply driving like a jerk, and though it is job security and a little bit of Darwinism mixed in there, it isn't fair to the people that they invariably hurt as well. Most often it's the innocents that get the most serious injuries and or killed.

2: If you race at the track (NED), what keeps you coming back?

I don't go to "tracks" per se, I have been to NED, but that was more of a tester to see about the car's straight line performance, I do on the other hand compete in series of auto-x, rally-x, and ice racing. The adrenalin rush and skill required keep me coming back. Any idiot can drive fast, but it takes skill, pinache, and a little bit of luck to do it well and look good while doing it.

3: Have you ever been busted racing? If so, did it deter you from racing on the street and think more towards racing at the track?

see no 1

4: How much do you spend annually on modifying your car? (estimate)

If I could afford it, much more, but I would say about 500-700 (if I'm lucky)- though that figure has dropped, but I also have only had the car for a year- hey Jack- wanna adopt me??

when i was a kid many moons ago, i used to try to keep up with the fastest driver on the road, through the craziest maneuvers. i don't do that anymore. i still yield to an occasional temptation to clock someone and hit some fairly idiotic speeds on highways (never on local roads) but i give it up if the other guy starts doing stupid stuff. why did i do it? probably to prove i'm crazier/have a bigger schlong than the other guy. why not anymore? i KNOW i have a bigger schlong and don't have to prove anything

2: If you race at the track (NED), what keeps you coming back?
i don't go to NED, never will. i somewhat want my transmission, differential, clutch, etc. to stay with me for a while. plus it's not much of a thrill, this straightline acceleration thing, especially not in a wrx.

3: Have you ever been busted racing? If so, did it deter you from racing on the street and think more towards racing at the track?
nope, never been busted. plain dumb luck.

4: How much do you spend annually on modifying your car?
i've spent maybe 4K so far, may spend another 1K next year on tires, brake pads, rotors, etc. as they wear out.

Thanks a lot. If you chose to answer, all names will be changed in the final paper and if you'd like me to use a particular alias, i'm open to suggestions.

no, I don't feel the need/want to possibly endanger myself/passengers/bystandards. I cannot handle the possible liabilities that comes with racing in the street. The liabilities will prevent me from living the life I want and hobbies I love pursuing, like driving.

Quote:

2: If you race at the track (NED), what keeps you coming back?
I prefer not to drag race. I think acceleration/good launch is a part of racing, but not racing or driving as a whole. The thrill of speed, tires screech, smells of rubber/clutch/oil, adrenaline are all the exciting factors in driving fast. I just love the revelation of getting closer to perfecting a turn, a downshift, a lap.

Never busted racing. Racing on the street has never been a consideration. I have too much at stake in life to risk.

yes-the thrill of being there and/or racing. no tracks are 20min away from me.

its fun there to but the rush isnt as huge. also its far for me to go consistently.

STi-Nane: I think by asking these questions here that you're answers are gonna be skewed. Primarily, because of the demographics. (ie Most of the members here, NESIC, are anti-streetracing.)

I would suggest having a mod moving it over to OT, because:

1) That's where street racing posts belong.

2) You'll reach an audience where there is more of a street racing scene and will probably get more interesting/honest responses.

$0 - I haven't lost a race for money once, so the winnings pay for the mods. It works out really well. It's good to be smart.

1. In the past, I'd try to take someone from a light on occasion, just for fun. I'd let him go before the speed became too ludicrous. A few years ago I quit doing even that when I escaped being busted by the skin of my teeth. More on that in a later answer.

2. Depends what track you mean. If you mean autocross or road course, I do it mostly for that adrenalin rush of driving really really way too fast for the street, and getting it WITHOUT driving on the street. Right up there is to improve my own driving skills.

3. I came this close: --><-- to being busted once. Late at night, a friend and I were going somewhere, friend was behind me but pulls up next to me at a light to get in front. We were feeling feisty, so when the light turned green, we both took off, and when I hit the speed limit I let my friend by. That's when we saw the blue lights behind us. The cop went RIGHT PAST US!!! My theory is that both of our cars had intakes, but quiet exhausts. All he saw was this Saturn and Jetta, which couldn't possibly have made so much noise... Anyway, I decided that I'd just used more than my fair share of luck, and quit street racing right then and there.

4. Now that my car is in a good state of tune, I don't spend much of anything on modifying it further. I do go through the regular consumables, though - including Mobil 1, race tires, brake pads...

Thanks for all the feedback guys. This is gonna make a huge impact on this paper. I think i have all I need to make a 7 page paper. And if you wondering, this paper isn't going to promote street racing, but rather show track racing as a safe and smart alternative. I'm psyched so many of you had negative comments on street racing, i'm really gonna be able to use that. On the flip side, positive comments are useful too because I can use them to show the underlying reasons why people race to begin with.

I'm so glad i'm a subie owner because I can't imagine the responses i would have gotten had i posted this on a honda or acura board. (or in OT for that matter) I wanted to post in NESIC because i wanted the track racer/anti-racer point of view. The paper is an ethnography of a ritual/event, and the event i chose was legal street racing. I chose this because it's a topic relevant to my life (aka. easier to write) and it would be a means to show an alternative to street racing.

Thanks a ton guys!!!

I street race every day of my life on my commute to and from work. Sadly, I also lose every street race I participate in because I usually don't even know that I'm involved in a street race. Since my daily driver is in the process of being transformed into a rally car and has numbers and the SCCA ClubRally decal pack on it (so rice) I get challenged at stoplights and on the highway about a half dozen times per day.

I usually travel higher than posted limits but, due to the conspicuousness of my car, refrain from driving recklessly unless I'm surrounded by cones.

2: If you race at the track (NED), what keeps you coming back?

I've only spectated at NED but what keeps me coming back to autocrosses, rallycrosses, track days and ice races is the fun factor of expanding on my skillset and taking the car up to its full potential under controlled conditions.

3: Have you ever been busted racing? If so, did it deter you from racing on the street and think more towards racing at the track?

No.

4: How much do you spend annually on modifying your car? (estimate)

I will probably have about $15k dropped into my Impreza this year.

Well, you did kind of put the blood in the water on that one. You didnt have to put the ClubRally decals on your car just yet. You must've expected this.

Just being a sarcastic punk. Seriously, though, I put the decals on the car out of necessity after realizing just how crappy my ghetto paintjob was. There were quite a few spots in the paint where Bondo pinholes and cracks were visible because of my poor prepwork and I used the conveniently huge decals to cover quite a few of those spots.

Yeah, that's it, yeah!

Dude, like Fast and the Furious was like the phattest movie ever dude.
I know guy who has a S2000 with like a hundred grand under the hood.

Altezzas, slamming, 19" wheels, surfboard wings, neon lighting, stickers, fart cans, chrome plating wheels, painted interiors, bronze tinting, etc.........

Man I envy the life of a street racer........

For the record, is driving beyond triple digits on a highway classify one as being a streetracer? Just wondering.......
