GC Kit and droop
Ok so I have my GC kit sitting at home waiting to go in and I'm reading about droop and GC's in the other thread. The setup I was going to run (mainly auto-x in ST) is:
koni inserts wagon housings TIC bump extenders in front 380 8" front springs 340 8" rear springs GC front camber plates group n rear tophats I would like to keep ride heights about where they are now (RCE wagon springs). I remember the rear is 13.5-13.75", can't remember the front off the top of my head. Will I have problems with the spring coming loose under full droop with this setup? If so, do i need helper springs at all 4 corners or just in the rear? If I am going to use helper springs, do I need to switch to a 7" spring or can my heights be accomplished with an 8" spring? Finally, if I am going to add helpers, are springs for different companies interchangable (Can I use hypercoil helpers with the Eibach main springs I have)? I'm just trying to get this as sorted as I can before I throw it on the car. Thanks.

I would use 7" springs with helpers at all 4 corners. You can use springs from different manufacturers as long as they are the same diameter. The hyperco helpers suck though, they are really flimsy. I use hyperco mains with swift helpers.

Many people including myself run 7" or 8" springs (depending on rates) with GC and no helper springs. Yes it will come loose if you are at full droop but I personally have never hit full droop and cause the spring to be unseated.
In the fronts if you zip tie the spring to the top spring seat, you won't have an issue since even at full droop, the spring seat will stay with the spring and seperate from the top hat. It's the rears that you would be more concerned with depending on your rear top hat choice. Last edited by ritky; 02-12-2010 at 12:39 PM. |

Why not just use helper springs instead of trusting a plastic zip tie to keep your spring in place?

Assuming you get the car to 3-wheel you still don't need to worry. The gas pressure in Konis is very low. Once the spring gets to full extension only gravity is pulling the spring further off the upper perch. 80% of the time its not going to be a problem. I bought helpers when I initially put a GC/Koni on my car. In the end I didn't bother using them. I ran the car competitively in STX for several seasons and never had the lack of helpers cause a problem.
Besides, when you consider the stack height of the helpers + the adapters is about 0.5", that's an additional 0.5" of compression stroke you're losing when you drop the lower perch down to maintain your current ride height. |

7" is good. I run 7" in the front and 6" in the back. Helpers in the front. I don't mind lifting a wheels sometimes in the rear. But if you are worried, just run a helper.
Yeah, it would take me jumping my car to unseat my springs. also, roads where I live are no where near a bumpy as the road in that video. That's just some east coast rolling country road. Out here in CA we have not the smoothest roads, but nothing like that. I rarely get over 2" of movement. So, no worries. Just zip tie the upper cone perch to the spring, and don't worry. |

Alright thanks guys. I'm gonna stick with what I have for now and then if needed, add helpers later.
