Default Unsatisfied with exhaust note

I bought a GR STi with Cobb cat back exhaust installed and I don't really like the note. It's quiet, no drone, very conservative, which is nice because I'm not a kid anymore, but doesn't have that "Subaru sound". Still has unequal length headers, catless downpipe.

What's your favorite, most "Subaru sounding"/"Boxer motor friendly note" exhaust?

I am aware this is a really dumb sounding question, but I don't know how else to ask.

You know what I mean, right?

YouTube isnít the best for exhaust not because it really depends on whatís recording the audio. The boxer rumble is really dependent on your headers, unequal length is what gives it that quality. I have an invidia turbo back on my sti and Iím really happy with how it sounds. Not too loud and no drone but really deep and aggressive.

I'm used to my HKS Hi Power so I don't personally think they make a crazy rumble but all my Subie boys say I rumble good.

The car who's rumble I liked the most had a Magnaflow

Stromung makes the best and most "Subaru" sounding exhaust on earth, second only to the Scooby Sports exhaust of yesteryear.

I'm not sure they make a GR exhaust though.

It doesn't matter what our favorite exhaust sound is, it matters what YOUR favorite exhaust sound is.

Many things make up the final sound, which includes the combination of exhaust pipes ( size, brand, cat or catless ) from the turbo back as well as what type of headers ( OEM, brand, type ) you are using.

Start with Youtube samples.
Go to Subaru meets and see what other have.
Ask if they could give you a short ride so you can hear the sound both inside and outside the car.

If you go by what someone says here and buy what they suggest, you most likely will be unhappy with what you bought and be out all that money you just spent for something you never actually wanted.

I always liked HKS for its sound. Might want to look into that, also be careful in California as now days the sound ordiance violation will send you to the ref

I've got a Cobb turbo back on my 18 STi and I dig it, though one that I REALLY like is the AWE Tuning Track Edition exhaust. It's flat out mean. Problem is, my STi is my daily driver, so I need something a little more tame since my daily commute to and from the office is right on about 80 miles.

I dig my Invidia Q300 catback with Invidia catless downpipe. It's loud. No way around it. But it sounds good. Not loud like an Apexi N1 or Buddy Club, but still pretty loud. The note is great and turns heads around town. Probably annoyed, but I enjoy it anyway. I've wanted one of these cars ever since I heard the exhaust note.

I have no idea what they sound like on our cars, but my HKS Hi Power on my DC5 (K20A2) was about the best exhaust money could buy for those cars. Coupled that with a catless race header and it was insanely loud. Too loud. And the Hi Power is pretty midrange in terms of volume. The piping is also coated, if that matters to you. The Apexi Noir is the quietest performance muffler that I am aware of, in terms of JDM parts.

I remember when Invidia was a questionable brand only available on Ebay. They are now known as quality products. HKS, however, is pretty much the very first JDM tuning company, starting their company on Hakosuka and Kenmeri GT-R parts. I would look into them. That or the Apexi Noir.

HAHA i bet, don't forget on the 04-05 there was no insulation, just aluminum outside panels and plastic inner pcs. So in my 2004 STi you hear and feel everything. Hell, a stereo was a option for the 04 STi. Still think the 04-07 STi were the models that were more true towered what a STI really meant. Now they have STis with heated seats. WTF is that?

The most "subaru" sound you can get is out of a 2.0l engine. My favorite is probably my gymkhana exhaust but thats overkill for most people.

If you want the rumble, but don't want the car crazy loud, the Invidia N1 (non-race model!) might be a good route to go.

I have ETS EL headers on my car, but it still has the rumble. Part of the reasoning is the resonator in the midpipe. Headers are just part of the equation
