Default considering an '05 baja

hiya. I'm considering trading in my '04 mazda 6i hatchback for an '05 baja sport. I have a few questions besides the usual "how do you like your car."

the tonneau cover from subie seems to be a bit pricey.. is there a better cheaper option? also, how is the factory subwoofer from subaru.. I wanted to get it installed if I end up getting a baja.. how does it sound? is it compatible with aftermarket decks (which I am guaranteed to get, I wasn't very impressed with the stock system)

Other than that I'm heavily considering this unique car as it serves my outdoor lifestyle (biking, kayaking) and car needs perfectly.. so if you have any tips or anything like that, please share.

thanks..
sean

Sean,
I have some opinions:
I love my baja and will never be getting rid if it in the near or late future. Having that truck bed is so invaluable that it makes life so much easier.

The tonneau cover from soa is really over priced in my mind since it is just a piece of vinyl that is pulled tight (by hand no less) and some cheep plastic. you also have to drill holes in the bed rales to mount it, so that was out for me. I have not seen mutch in the cheeper market. The snugtop is running something like 1300, I am not sure about the ozzbros, but I think it is about 800 (I could be wrong), and the ARE cap is about 1500 (I think). I have the ARE cap with the keyless entry on it and love it. I know that it makes it look more like the outback but having all of the volume makes all the differance for me and being able to lock it as well.

The soa subwoofer I haven't heard in a long time, but though it was a little on the pricer sides for a sub. I have installed the clarion srv303 in the same place and it has more power and you can get it for less than the oem one (as long as you install it yourself, if not, probally about the same or a little more depending on the installers). I love it and it sounds great with my Pioneer DEH-550MP (I think that is the model of the top of my head). The stock system isn't great, but it is good for most stock systems in my opinion. I have not upgraded the speakers at all, but my turbo premium came with the subaru upgraded speakers and everything seems to be really well ballanced.

both of our baja and forester have meet our outdoor lifestyles really well. We like to do some hiking, biking and camping, and oo yes, some 4x4ing. I have gotten my baja in places that most 4x4 owners were saying "how the hell did you get that here". This little trucklet is so versital that it keeps amazing me constantly. I am about to move and most of the work is going to be done by the baja so will have some pics to post of what we get in it.

One tip is get the skid plate from http://www.rallitek.com. It was the best thing I have gotten. It makes the front end so much stiffer and it provides that much more protection agenst anything evil protruding out of the ground that wants to attack your oil pan.

I just got my Regal Blue Pearl 5 speed sport on the 28th... best thing I ever bought

Regarding the bed cover you can get a soft cover (junk I hear, they like to rip at the corners) or you can get a hard lockable fiberglass cover for like $500)

www.scoobytruck.com is a small site, but people on there know where to order the hard cover from.

The Ozzbros can be found a few different places on the net. I ususally order my stuff from these guys below. I live in RI and they are out of CT so shipping is pretty quick.

I've had a few Subbies in the past so I'm not new to them but this is my first one in quite a few years.

I've had my 2003 Baja for about 4 months now and I like it a lot. I got it with about 20,000 1 owner miles on it in mint condition for $14k.

In retrospect I should've spent a few more thousand and gotten a used turbo model though as the power is very lacking on the N/A and I'm used to fast vehicles.

The subwoofer is a total joke, it adds mid bass but no real bass.

Overall it's a great vehicle, excellent build quality, smooth ride yet it still manages to have reasonably sporty handing all things considered and I actually get compliments on it quite often.

Gas mileage isn't as good as I had hoped, 23 MPG mostly highway, but that's the price for AWD. It goes without saying it will be great in snow, and in rain it sticks to the road like glue.

I can heartily reccommend one.

Speed is all in the eye of the beholder.

My non-turbo is probably the fastest thing I've driven in the past few years.

Then again I am coming from a 100 or so HP GL and a 90 or so HP brat.

yeah, if there is one thing my 6 had was a decent amount of speed.. after I got done with it, it was pretty quick.. I'm honestly not concerned that the baja will be too slow, n/a or not. I just have to find a dealer to cut me the right deal now!

is it too late to bump this thread?

i recently went from a 2004 mazda 6s to an 05 baja turbo. the main differences are interior build quality (mazda really dropped the ball on the 6), nimble handling (although i see you have a 6i, which is plenty nimble... the v6 in the 6s is a heavy sumbitch), and low-end power, of which the 6s has practically none under 3000 rpm. i can only imagine how bad it is with your 6i. after easily peeling out and losing traction in rain while driving the 6, the baja is almost its polar opposite. the baja is so much more fun to drive. test drive one, you'll see.
