AMS GT-R World Challenge Build! Complete Tear Down and Track Car Build, 100s of Pics!
A majority of our business here at AMS is building completely prepared race cars for our customers. We campaign our own very successful race team and based on those efforts/merrits we are able to provide very capable and proven race cars to our customers.
A while back we had a couple of customers work with us to build two very nice EVO track cars: A blue EVO IX which had a very extensive build: http://www.amsperformance.com/blue_demon.php and A silver EVO X that got much of the same treatment: http://www.amsperformance.com/s_bullet.php Well these two are at it again and this time they want to build a GT-R. Just like the two EVO's prior they went and bought a BRAND NEW GT-R from the dealer and sent it over to us to work our magic. This car came to us with a whopping 74 miles on it. Today we began the tear down process on this car. The slated parts lists has some mild but effective power upgrades but just AMAZING suspension, brake and chassis work! We plan on doing a custom exhaust to the car to optimize weight savings along with some trans cooling and a Custom AMS tuned Cobb AP to increase the power. That is where the easy stuff ends. Along with that a very comprehensive Roll cage and suspension and brake setup will go into the car. The best of the best will be used on this build. Look for some REALLY unique and professional grade components to make their way into this car. We really hope to break some new ground in the GT-R world with this build and bring some great suspension, weight reduction and chassis ideas to the GT-R community. Stay Tuned! Here are some pictures of how the car looked after it was unloaded from the transport:

Some updated Pictures for Everyone. Eric Jones has been busy with the tear down of this soon to be track GT-R.
Again this is going to be a TRACK ONLY project so the first step to take is to completely remove the interior so that a VERY comprehensive roll cage can go in its place. Safety is the one thing not to play around with. On to the tear down!! First step is to get a baseline on weight. So we tossed the big girl on the scales...3908! Now that we have our stock weight....its time for a tear down!! To build the cage the proper way we have to remove all interior pieces including the dash Last edited by AMS; 02-23-2011 at 11:59 AM. |

And now the Dash comes OUT! The doors are being replaced in lieu of some lighter carbon fiber counterparts. At 68 lbs each we stand to shed some serious LB'S! Last edited by AMS; 02-23-2011 at 12:00 PM. |

Now to remove the dash bar for roll cage fabrication and installation. Our once perfectly stock GT-R is now starting to look like its half way done on the assembly line I will keep you posted as the build progresses. So far things are moving very quickly! Rear glass is out along with the front glass for cage prep Getting ready for transmission removal! Rear sub-frame is out for trans removal Hovercraft mode! Ready to ship to Shepherd trans for some upgrades Last edited by AMS; 02-23-2011 at 12:02 PM. |

Some more updates!
We are starting to move at a quicker pace on this track GT-R and I wanted to share with you some new pictures: The interior is now down just about as far as we can go Nothing but the best in the way of suspension for this track GT-R, JRZ to the rescue! Test fitting some sample wheels and tires along with the Password JDM Carbon fiber front fenders for a little more front tire room. Now we have Justin our suspension expert working on installing the JRZ Triple adjustable coilovers with remote reservoirs. Last edited by AMS; 02-23-2011 at 12:03 PM. |

Justin and the Fab shop have been making some serious ground on our customer track car GT-R
The Carbon Kevlar Recaro Hans Equipped Seat has arrived The beginnings of a custom seat bracket from Justin. Justin went ahead and cut down the tunnel side seat mount to make it even with the rest of the rails. You can see how much smaller it is now and how low it will sit Sean is busy taking out material near the rear shock towers to allow for easier damper adjustment. This also will enable us to save some weight in bracing and to eliminate the cast aluminum seat back. Justin found a way to take out a good chunk of weight by making his own steering column using some new and existing pieces. Total weight savings for this was 7lbs! With the full cage going in soon the roof bracing on the car is not needed and just excess weight. Here we can see Sean cutting out the roof bracing.
Everything adds up! with this latest round of chassis lightening we were able to shed 21 lbs/9.5 Kg's More to come!!! Last edited by AMS; 02-23-2011 at 12:04 PM. |

Justin has been burning the midnight oil on the cage for this car. Really taking his time to make sure how tight it is to the chassis. When its all said and done it will rival the best of them

More updates!
Justin has been hard at work building this cage and its coming out GREAT! Below are more progress pictures of the cage. Keep in mind the cage has not been placed in its final spot so its sitting much lower in the car then it should. When finished it sits VERY tight to the car. More track car updates!
One of the requests our customer asked for was a high volume fuel cell that would retain the weight distribution of the factory cell...a tall order indeed. However we love a challenge. Here we see Justin cutting out the floorboard of the GT-R to make room for our new carbon fiber saddle fuel cell we are making. It should be pretty wild when we are all done All Cut away and ready to start mocking up a design Here we have a very rough mock-up of our idea. From here the engineers will use our CMM arm and measure the area to see what our space limitations are and build the highest volume cell with the area we have to work with. While Justin and the engineers do their thing its time for Eric Jones to get cracking on installing our new billet bolt on turbo upgrades. This particular car is getting a variation of our SR750 package but will be tuned on low boost. He wants a well rounded but very reliable car and pushing the stock turbo's is not something he wants to do, nor do we recommend. Last edited by AMS; 02-23-2011 at 12:08 PM. |

Big ol CBRD Radiator installed....really looks massive from this picture. That's because it is! And THAT my friends is how you strip an engine bay! When Eric does something he does it all the way hahaha The engine is out and turbo's removed. Time for Eric to toss on the AMS billet Turbo upgrade Stay tuned for more updates as they happen Last edited by AMS; 02-23-2011 at 12:08 PM. |

Sorry for the lack of updates guys. This cage is insane!
When building a cage for any car in wheel to wheel racing you really have to leave no stone unturned. Thanks to Justin here at AMS we are doing just that! Last edited by AMS; 02-23-2011 at 12:10 PM. |

Some more updates on the World Challenge GT build.
Now that cage is pretty much sorted we can move on to other aspects of the build. Fuel safe was able to build us a custom 30 gallon fuel cell based on our CAD drawings that we sent in to them. Today they shipped us the shell for some test fitting. This cell when complete will house two high volume pumps to feed the updated power plant. We also got our hands on some very unique suspension pieces for the GT-R. As you can see they offer a much wider range of adjustment compared to their stock counterparts. Here we have a before shot with the factory components installed And now some after shots with the new suspension hardware. Last edited by AMS; 02-23-2011 at 12:12 PM. |
