Upper Coolant Reservoir Leak
Just cleaned off last night, and only drove for 3 miles today and this was the result. I previously thought it was because I had too much coolant in the lower fill/overflow clear tank, but I siphoned out the last bit last night so it is under the "full" line now. Obviously most of the fluid that you can see is on top, and since the bolts do not go into the tank, its certainly not coming from there. The hoses are also clamped and secure, and I do not believe they are the culprit. The cap seems to be pretty secure, and I can loosen it without the neck spinning or seemingly too unstable/damaged. It seems that the top plate is bolted down to the lower section, could there be a seal in there that is going as well? It would appear to me that I need to replace at least the top plate on this reservoir. I assume that means I will need to drain out the coolant enough so that the fluid line is well below? Can I get just the top plate, or will I have to buy the whole thing? And what will make the seal between the two plates?

I don't think you can buy just the top plate. Just get the newer plastic version. That's what I did on my 04. The part # is 21132AA131. It's one piece and much easier to deal with than trying to repair that metal one.

In what situations should that pressure cap be relieving itself and letting coolant out into that escape line?
There is a crack around the neck of that cap area, where the bottom seal of the cap would press against. It's probable that any time the cap relieves pressure the vapor/liquid isn't encouraged to leave out of the escape line, and seeps out of the crack in the neck. I just wish I better understand how and when that cap functioned to relieve pressure, as it happened during my short drive to work today (but I did hit 19psi of boost, so that could be the situation) |

Just wondering exactly which model the "21132AA131" part number you gave came from. edit: Seems like they are the same part number, and the plastic ones just totally replaced the metal one. Not sure if i could even get the metal one if i wanted to. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=952596 Last edited by IceWilly; 10-17-2012 at 10:52 AM. |

^^ That's correct. Sometime in mid 05, they switched to the plastic tank and stopped making the metal. It's a direct replacement for the metal tank. You can no longer buy the metal one new unless some dealer has some really old stock.
