I'll second using a Thule Big Mouth bike rack. The one downside is that it contacts the frame, but as a result your bike is absolutely secure and will never slip out (barring catastrophic damage or unlikely user error). I've used one for several years to hold my mountain bike and it's held up wonderfully.

I am looking at the Yakima Forklift and wondering if that setup will work... I have sport aero bars and a roof spoiler in the rear. Sounds like I may be happier with new crossbars. Also not sure if the spoiler will be in the way. Anyone else have a good 2-bike setup on their sport imp?
you can mount your crossbars all the way to the front and shorten the distance between your crossbars(making the rear of the forklift higher) so you don't hit you spoiler when you open the hatch.

my set up has about 2 inches clearance from the end of the sprocket rocket to the spoiler.i have the basic spoiler on mine.

Thanks.
Good tip on the rockymounts, I like their crossbar mount/color options. Except that means more decisions haha

Thule has not updated their fit guide to include the 2012 hatchback, so I'm wondering if anybody has tried anything other than the 460's. Specifically I'm interested in the 480 traverse feet that are mentioned above.

can anyone tell me the difference between the Crossbar Set - Fixed (5 Door) and the Crossbar Set - Aero (Sport)? They both cost the same and have the same picture on the accessory page. Thanks!

Look here: https://www.subaruonlineparts.com/in...ath=33_153_158

Fixed attaches to roof (non-Sport), Aero attaches to factory rails (Sport).

Is anyone using Yakima Double Cross towers (circa 1996) with the Sport rails?

Double Cross are the predecessor to Low Rider and Rail Grab

I'm a huge Thule fan and I used to work for them. I recommend them highly. Plus, I find their racks and accessories are just of much higher quality than what the other companies are making. For me it's a no-brainer.

Sorry for the newbie question, but has anyone installed the OEM fixed crossbar on the '12 5-door non-Sport models themselves? Is it fairly easy to install and remove?

Default Question on Yakima or Thule crossbars

N00b here. I'm about to buy a 2012 Impreza Sport Premium so I can haul my 2 kayaks around. I know I could get the factory Aerobar from Subaru, but it doesn't look quite as sturdy as the Yakima Whispbar or Thule Aeroblade.

So the question is, if I want to use the Whispbar or AeroBlade, what kind of towers do I need to attach these crossbars to the factory rails? Right now, neither the Yakima or Thule web site seems to list a fit kit for the 2012 Impreza Sport. Any ideas?

If you have the sport premium (w/ raised rails) you should be able to purchase 'railgrab' or similar attachment with Yak or Thule bars to mount right up. I looked into the Whispbar and you can either go directly between the rails, or mount above if you want to extend the bars beyond the rails. I'm not sure if Thule has updated their site for 2012 Impreza yet. If you get a regular premium impreza without the rails then you would need towers.

Ahh, thanks for the info. I must have missed that on Yakima's site. For the Whispbar, it looks like I need the Whispbar Rail. Has anyone used this with the 2012 Impreza Sport? Just curious how well it works.

Here's the RockyMounts setup I went with:

IMG_0372 by jadams788, on Flickr

MTB back tire hits the spoiler, may have to spin one or both around. There is a small amount of whistling on the highway so I may look into a fairing. Otherwise I really like the setup. Mounting system was pretty slick and seems to fit the "aero" bars well.

1slow,
Can you take front pics of your car and the bikes (not close ups)? I want to see if the bikes are perpendicular to the car and pavement. I have curved bars on mine. Thanks.

I was able to get them fairly straight considering the curve of the bars, depends how much space you need between bikes. With the racks pushed to the outside they were angled a bit. Keep in mind the parking lot slopes slightly down to the right here:

I can confirm that Double Cross towers fit.

I need a favor. Can anyone that has a Sport model Impreza with roof rails measure the distance between the rails at the front of the rail bar and the rear (basically where the 2 crossbars would go)? I wanted to get the Whispbar Rail system for my car, but Yakima has no information in their database on the 2012 Impreza! And apparently the Whispbar Rail comes in about a dozen different lengths, according to the Yakima rep I just spoke to.

Thanks in advance!

Per cars101.com

Only the Sport models have roof rails. Hand measured dimensions (see arrows): Length 35.6", Width, 37" at the rear to 40" at the front

You rock. Thanks for the info. Now I gotta talk to the folks at Yakima about getting the right Whispbars for the 2012 Impreza. Looks like either the Whispbar S53 or S54 would be the one to go for. I'll post here when I find out for sure, in case anyone else is interested in the same system.

Picked up a Thule 450 Crossroad rack with 50" bars, 42" fairing, and a pair of Thule Big Mouth bike racks for the '12 Impreza Sport.

That fairing made a world of difference. Before I installed it, there was a notable hum once you got above 25mph. With it in place, there's no sound at all.

Love the setup; looks great... I too have been trying to decide which way to go: Thule, Yakima, OEM, etc. I too have a Limited Sport Hatch, do you mind my asking what that complete setup ran?

What site did you buy from?

I picked up everything from my local Eastern Mountain Sports that just opened. I paid roughly the same amount there as you can get it from www.orsracksdirect.com. With the bar system, two Big Mouth racks, the fairing and keyed locks, it came to just under $700.

A comparable Yakima setup would probably run a few hundred less, depending on what bike racks you get. I just prefer how the Thule mounts wrap around the factory bar as opposed to the claw setup works on the Yakima.

Let me just suggest that if you have an REI near you, become a member and buy there. You could also shop on-line at REI.com. Being a member gives you a lifetime guarantee on all purchases. I bought my Thule gear from them and when my prior car got totaled, I found that most of the parts were not usable on the 2012 Impreza Sport. REI refunded my full purchase price on the parts I could no longer use despite the fact that they were nearly 7 years old and well used. Parts to fit the rack on the Impreza roof rails actually cost less than the parts I returned so I came out ahead on the deal. They may cost a little more up front, but membership has it's privileges (and they have 20% off sales on Thule and Yakima gear fairly regularly, so it may not cost you much more than other places anyway).
