Lost Wheel Lock Key
Ive lost my aftermarket wheel lock key. I had to get one of the 3 wheel locks drilled off by subaru to remove the flat tire. Is there any way to get the other 3 off without having to pay a shop $120+ to get the other 3 drilled? any ideas?

You'll have to sacrifice a socket to get it out yourself.
Find a socket that is just a tad smaller than locknut itself. Jam that socket over the locknut by hammering it in. Once the socket has been hammered onto the locknut, you then can use a ratcher or breaker bar to loosen the nut off. Good luck! What kind of lock nut is it? Is it a McGard lock nut? The Subaru lock nuts are also McGard lock nuts. If you've sent in your registration papers, then all you need to do is call them and pay for a new key to be sent out to you. It should take about 2 weeks. LaterZ! Darren!! |

Ok tire on marine charged me $20 for all 4 & it took them around 5 minutes. I can't believe subaru had to drill it off < that is probaly their term for a 2 minute impact gun removal followed by a 58 minute coffee break before signing off on a job well done. Ok ok maybe part was for the tire swap as well but since that is not clear I'll just jump to conclusions.

Just get a 12 point 19mm socket from crappy tire or something then hammer it on there and spin it off.

I always thought that something like this would work for basic McGuard wheel locks:
I've seen them for sale at Sears and Canadian Tire. That's why I don't believe in wheel locks. Depending on clearance, you could try clamping on a set of vise grips on to the socket. If the nuts were torqued properly, it shouldn't be too tight. |

the easiest way to remove them is to use the slightly smaller socket and hammer... and why did you go to subaru for a flat tire? i wouldn't expect a dealership to know how to remove a wheel lock properly but a good tire shop sure would have... |

thanks guys, i will try OK tires and see what they can do. If all goes wrong, i will try the small socket.
The tire popped while i was on my way to check if they have a spare key at Subaru. |

Anyway, back on topic - good luck getting them off. Oh, and next time, the dealerships won't have a spare key - you have to go directly to the manufacture for that. LaterZ! Darren!! |

Sorry to hear that. But last time I lost mine and asked my friend used to work at Volco to get me another one, but I have to get a new Set of wheel locks.
Not sure the brand u have, but my friend told me there are only 20 different patterns of lock for each brand. |

this is so easy to do
i had a similar thing happen to me. i broke my key. Get yourself one of those sockets with a reverse thread inside and impact it and they will come right off. Then to remove the nut from the socket, squish it in a vice, the nut will shatter, and off to the next nut. Very easy and safe to do. similar to the top left one EDIT: on a side note.. i dont get why shops still use smaller sized sockets and hammers and drilling and stuff like that. I remember they all told me the same thing when i had this problem. Also they couldnt guarantee the rim wouldnt be damaged after either. This socket is very cheap and easy to find, im amazing they still uses just old school tools, or maybe say they do, then take it into the back and just remove it with these.. i dont no Last edited by Spy; 09-17-2007 at 06:09 PM. |

^^^ Good to know! I didn't know that they had a tool for this. I guess they also use this for rounded-out nuts too.
Where did you grap this tool? LaterZ! Darren!! |

im not sure about local shops, i just borrow one from my old highschool automotive teacher. But they can be bought for cheap of the net.
first one i found, im sure there will be more on ebay or anywhere else http://www.shop.com/Mechanics_M980_1...18277-p!.shtml they have a reverse thread on the inside. The socket starts out wide, and gets more narrow further inside the socket to tighten up on the lug nut. Generaly one of these sockets will work with most lug nuts. It work perfect with my oem subaru locking nuts that were complete smooth on the outside. (those mcgaurd ones with the pattern on the top) |
