This is a 2004STi that got brought to us and had a long road to success. Brought to us on a flat bed with pretty much only a bucket of bolts to sort through we were able to sort through the issues the previous shop caused while attempted to perform the project. They had assembled the motor, but we weren't sold on their workmanship. After a lengthy talk with the customer expressing our concerns he opted to take the painful step back to square 1 and have the longblock torn back down and inspected for proper assembly. This turned out to be a great decision as we found rod bolts over torqued, low quality bearings, piston rings installed incorrectly, as well as the cylinders being ~.001" out of round to name a few. Certainly not the recipe for a proper build. After going back through the motor and rebuilding it to our ML500+ specification with ACL race bearings we started to address some of the other issues. We ended up rebuilding the cylinder head and the turbocharger while the car was down to ensure the best reliability and results possible. All said and done we had some very surprising results out of a lil ol' VF39 turbo! Solid green lines = ~22-23PSI high boost map, dotted blue lines = Low boost wastegate pressure map. We all know theres absolutely no gain in doing so, but an unaware customer may follow along with your sales pitch. I'd be willing to bet this car also has the maf fully intact with no aftermarket iat wired in. |

For anyone curious however, with a low inertia dyno (like our FX5000-AWD or Mustang MD-150 w/o load from the eddy brake) it is quite important to run it in a higher gear to ensure the vehicle gets loaded in a similar/identical fashion on the street as we were observing on the dyno during tuning. We do not use load from the PAU for testing currently due to the software functionality, it isn't as consistent as testing with inertia only. We have found that testing in this manner provides consistent results inline with your average DynoJet.

You have that backwards actually.... lower gear ration will slow the rate of acceleration. Dynos essentially measure rate of acceleration. Our numbers would be higher with a 4th gear pull.

You can generally reach higher load regions of the various calibration tables loading up the engine in a higher gear. Tuning using WOT pulls in 3rd or 4th gear doesn't always compensate for loads you'll find at WOT in 5th or 6th climbing a hill. I don't know why someone would climb a hill at WOT in 5th or 5th when they could downshift a gear or two and be more efficient, but all kinds of people do all kinds of silly things. Quite honestly it amazes me that any tuner can feel fully confident with a tune knowing they were only given a few hours to try to work magic on something that's expected to make a ton more power AND be reliable. The OEM's spend years coming up with a reliable cal that works for everyone. We all ask these magicians to give us more power and maintain that same reliability with a few hours worth of fiddling with things. Think before you speak or go bro trolling in a different forum so I don't have to get all surly dealing with the ignorance. Sorry, its a "get off my lawn" kind of day. |
