Default Killer B FEELER - Rotated Upper Turbo Coolant Tank Thingy....

So here is the thought process behind a "Mini" Engine Coolant Filler Tank (commonly referred to as the Upper/Turbo Coolant Reservoir)***8230;

The purpose of the OEM Engine Coolant Filler Tank (here forth known as the "ECFT") is a high point fill. What is a high point fill? Good question! Bear with me as I ramble a bit***8230; On most cars the radiator filler cap is the highest point in the cooling loop. This allows the coolant to be added and/or replaced while allowing air to escape the system at the same time. Without a high point that can be opened, or vented, air can be trapped compromising the effectiveness of the cooling system. A quick thread search will show LOTS of "I just changed my radiator and now my car overheats" threads that are a perfect example of what can happen if air is trapped in the cooling system. The turbocharged Subaru is a bit of an oddball in that the radiator filler neck is not the high point of the cooling system; the turbo charger sits higher than the radiator filler neck. So, to address this situation Subaru uses the ECFT. The ECFT allows the cooling system to be filled and air to escape similar to a traditional system.

For guys running a rotated turbo setup the turbo inlet and/or inlet piping interferes with the ECFT. This means the tank either needs to be relocated or removed. While some have been successful in removing the ECFT, this is not the preferred method as its success is hit or miss at best. The other option is relocating the OEM tank to another location. Firewall, strut towers, and various other areas in the engine bay have been used via fabrication of brackets and other less glamorous methods. While this can work, the relocation requires longer lines that may themselves trap air if the routing is not well thought out, the final location may not be high enough to be as effective as the OEM location and it requires the additional use of fabrication tool and materials, which many of us do not have.

Back to the original point of the post, the thought of manufacturing a "Mini' ECFT that would utilize the OEM high point location, mounting points, Subaru filler cap, and most importantly, provide clearance for the big rotated turbo setups. All while looking like it belonged there, not as an afterthought.

At this point a concept design has been made and I'm on the fence as far as what kind of market demand there may, or may not, be. So here I am, calling out any and all opinions on the matter, from you, the Subaru community that we make these parts for in the first place. So please feel free to share any thoughts, likes, dislikes, ideas, etc., etc***8230;

Thanks!
Chris

UPDATE:

Here's a prototype to give you an idea of the size. A couple tweaks to make, but this is basically it...

Since I'm not rotated, pricing would be a key issue for me. Also, would it come with new lines?

FYI, 2 factory replacement pieces exist, from Forge and Moroso.

The Forge one is huge and has lackluster reviews. The Mosoro one is an over flow tank not a ECTF... althought we WILL be coming out with a competitive product to the Moroso piece, but better

The Moroso is a ECTF. I have one.

Im interested in seeing the KBM offerings for both items, though. Even though yesterday I swore I am never modifying a car again.

Oh yeah. I forgot about that one. That's still too big though. Plus it doesn't use a Suby cap. Many (including Moroso) don't know that the cap is specific to the ECTF. It's not just a radiator cap. Look in your FSM

Yeah that's bad. The ECFT needs to have a lower pressure rating than the radiator cap so system pressure will equalize. As your system sits right now, you're sending coolant to the overflow prematurely

Keep the comments coming guys!!!

That definitely explained some issues. Glad I tackled that, come here OE cap. But, you mean a 1.3 on the ECFT and 1.5 on the overflow won't do?

OK, good to know. Our tank would be NPT threaded so you can install whatever fittings you needed (barb, AN adapters, etc...).

We're not a custom fab shop, so I can't help you on that one We do book engineering time, but even at that our next open slot is out over 6 months

I would purchase one right now. I'm in process of switching over all my hose to AN fittings and need a solution for this tank. I'm running a rotated Cosworth Manifold and would like a location that mounts behind the Cosworth intake manifold. I really hate the Moroso tank, bottle style containers are usually too tall for where I would like to mount them, plus they don't usually have an option for AN fittings (unless its Carbing then the fittings are too small). The only other option is a Crawford Performance tank, but again it does not come with AN fittings as an option. The Crawford tank has the best shape out of the bunch, but still lacks features that people with more custom engine bay layouts desire.

I tell you what, build me a custom tank that's 4.5" OD by 5" tall with complete AN fitting connections that mounts behind the Cosworth tank somewhere on the transmission and I would pay you INSTANTLY!

Sorry for the excitement, but there is not another company out there that produces such an item for our market.

Any idea of how this will be designed? I could probably change my layout pending your design.

I try to get some models posted.

BTW, this will use a SUBARU cap. The cap designed for the ECFT so the system will function as intended. The filler neck will be CNC milled from solid billet aluminum since no one else makes a Subaru ECTS filler neck

Same location/mounting as OEM, just better

Define 'good looking'. This is subjective am I an engineer so I have no 'feelings', or as my wife puts it, "I'm dead inside"... but if you guys have any kind of concesus on shape (round or rectangular), the masses just might get their way

The ports will all be NPT so using a barb (OEM), AN or other fittings is dependant on what adapter you put in there

See above

What I've got so far is rectangular in shape. It allows the most compact design and simplifies manufacturing a bit.

Thanks for the opportunity for us to lend ideas to the design. I'm going with a different mounting location besides stock since I have a flipped Cosworth manifold. Thanks again!

so it woud likely mount to the intake manifold or to the block somehow? i'd prefer the later and as would some other rotated folks that perhaps have flipped manifolds or shaved manifolds or are we in the minority. if it was tied into the block somehow, then everyone could be included.

i'd appreciate a cleaner option that using my stock one on my 08 wrx. even if i couldn't use it in it's intended location but could adapt to install where my OEM one is now for a cleaner look, that'd be great. i dont think i have room in the stock location anyway so perhaps just having your product as a replacement would be nice. i would love a clean looking cylinder to play off the cosworth AOS. this seems like a popular AOS and mounting for rotated guys so i can't be the only one.

here is the visual - awesome to here about all the new projects, chris! good ideas!
