Default Video: Google's Self-Driving Car Performs Like a Precise Maniac

Quote:
Google's self-driving car project is ambitious at heart--working with DARPA, Google is aiming to cut the number of traffic-related fatalities by as much as half, saving fuel along the way. But the badassery of the project has been kept largely under wraps until now: This video comes from a demonstration at a TED conference, and we can see that Google's robot drivers have the cold, steel heart of a rally driver.

The video shows a self-driven car powering through a test course, screaming around tight curves with total precision--not the hesitant, leisurely drive the video operator expected. It's not clear if the course was pre-mapped into the car's navigation or if it was using its sensors to pilot in real-time, but either way it's both impressive and intense.

You would think they would do this in a abandoned parking lot with nothing around. There were concrete barriers all over... I'd be flipping out in that car.

Wow... lots of questions in my mind, but that's still crazy cool. We've come a long way since Dr. Hammond's SUVs-on-tracks from Jurassic Park.

That's in Long Beach, I wanna see the Google cars run the Long Beach Indy Car track route

That parking lot is a couple stories up, had things gone all wrong, those guys would have been in the first Google self FLYING vehicles.

When trying to describe autoXers in the future, I will ensure I reference them as "Precise maniacs".

Yeah, I'm still not noticing it.

BTW: 1G lateral instantaneous. Pretty much any street vehicle can do that. It's having the balance and grip to continue doing it for an entire 360° skidpad run that's tricky.
