Conversion Gurus, Double-Check my List? EJ205 -> 98 RS
OK, so I'm about to transplant a '02 EJ205 into my '98 RS.
Here's what I have: Motor (duh) Manifolds (intake/exhaust) UP/DP IC ECU Engine Harness Turbo Radiator Cap WRX X-member (what kinda spacers/how many do I need?) WRX Fuel pump Here's what I want to carry over from my RS: PS pump (I need new lines, right? Where can I get/make those?) Alternator AC compressor Cruise control (will I need to trim the cable?) Radaitor itself (How do I hook up w/ the WRX cap?) Control arms (how am I shimming this?) Here's what I know I still need: Front, rear, bulkhead harness WRX FP controller (what is this?) New Clutch (Exedy Stage 1 sound good? Hold ~200-220 whp?) Help wiring. I know I'm missing some stuff... most of this I already know, but I need the Conversions Gurus' affermation. This is going in in about a month, what else should I find/need to know? Thanks, James |

AND HG
OK, so I'm about to transplant a '02 EJ205 into my '98 RS.
Here's what I have: Here's what I want to carry over from my RS: PS pump- you can either purchase the lines from subaru or get them customly made...I overlooked this and had to purchase them locally from subaru at 20% off and they still cost over 200 and you will also need the power steering reservor. Which is like 70 new as well. Just try to find these off a wrecked car and save yourself some cash Cruise control good luck with this if you did not get a wrx throttle cable you will need to use the cruise control bracket on the throttle body so that everything lines up correctly....so either get the wrx throttle cable or say good by to cruise control. Plus you will probably have to find a new place to mount the cruise control unit because the turbo and DP will be in its way. Radaitor you will just need to go to autozone and get some coolant hose/vacumm line. Also to hook the engine to the radiator the bottom stock hose will fit the top hose will need to be shortened by cutting it. Control arms...I have the legacy xmember so I did not need to do this but I believe you just use some washers. Here's what I know I still need: Front, rear, bulkhead harness-bulkhead harness is the front, rear and everything....it will run you 400+ used and close to 800 I think new. You will need this and over half of it gets cut out and thrown away. WRX FP controller (what is this?) -is a little box with 8 wires that controls the fuel pump speed. Shouls cost you less than 100 again try to source it used. New Clutch (Exedy Stage 1 sound good) Great choice its what I got Help wiring. Have fun. you will also need a new front sway bar for a wrx with the endlinks and make sure you have the brackets for the bushings that attach to the crossmember new spark plugs....if you want.... can't think of to much more off the top of my head...I am sure others will......you will also make several trips out for random hardware and hosing lol. Good luck with your swap hopefully it runs better than mine does right now |

I dont think you need the rear harness. I'm in the same boat as you. Based on the wiring diagrams, it only looks like you need the bulkhead and front harnesses, and the line that goes to the FMU.
Honestly I am about to just buy the harnesses...this is too stressful trying to hunt for these things everyday... What about the boost solenoid, and the MAF sensor and housing? Randy Last edited by Randoramma; 04-20-2005 at 04:32 PM. |

What about the boost solenoid, and the MAF sensor and housing? Randy
forgot those also dont forget the MAF sensor and your 02 sensors....and an egt sensor unless you are going aftermarket uppipe or wanna just use the 2.2k ohm resistor. As for the rear harness the only thing you need from it is the connector/plug that goes into the fuel pump control unit. |

I need the WRX-specific MAF sensor? I can't use the one already on my car?
Are you saying that the O2 sensors need to be WRX specific too? I didn't know there was any factory EGT sensor on the WRX. I was planning on using a gutted stock up-pipe... where does this 2.2k resistor factor in? Thanks for the responses so far, James |

For MAF sensor, hmm, not sure I was just going by what I needed to get, forgot about the 99. I know the WRX has a 5 pin connector, I know 3 of the pins.. (sig. shield. ground. ) but they might give different signal values.
The 02 sensors look different (again this is from an 00 to an 02) The ECU pinnout reads a 4 signal front sensor (and no rear sensor). Both the first signals read the same, but the 00's last two read .2 - 4.9 . This doesn't even match the 02's heater signals of which the 00 lacks. The front O2 is a 4 signal sensor and on 02 its a 2 sensor. Why do you not need EGT for aftermarket or gutted up-pipe? Also no EGT sensor listed on 02 WRX ECU pinnouts? AmericanY Which radiator cap did you get? Stock WRX? |

Randoramma,
I haven't looked at the wiring diagrams yet. I have a buddy who did the same conversion to the same car (another 98 RS) so I'm going to be doing the wiring based on the notes he took during his swap. I'm just trying to get together all the physical parts I need. I wasn't aware there were any EGT sensors at all on a stock WRX. I planned on adding one later w/ gauges, but I didn't know I needed to make any provisions for a stock one. I have the stock radiator cap that sits in between the intake manifold and the stock WRX airbox. Thanks, James |

The egt is in the stock uppipe and goes to the ecu....if you use a gutted/catless uppipe the sensor would get destroyed so ppl put a 2.2k ohm resistor into the plug that would normally connect to the sensor.....in other words since you are using a gutted uppipe you do not need to worry about it.....as for the 02 sensors the plugs on the o2 sensors for the wrx are different than for the rs....you could always cut the plugs and just solder the wires together but I do not know if the rs 02 sensor reads over the same range as the wrx one.

You'll need a WRX front O2. Its actually a wideband O2. I didnt have one, so I had to pick one up at the stealership for $199. I also needed the PS lines (in/out) and reservoir. That set me back another $160.

I have heard that the RS pump either will not bolt up to the ej20 block (aka bracket differences), OR the pump puts the pulley in the wrong place so it doesnt line up with the belt, OR both. Basically I have head you need to use WRX pump. However with enough time, money, and ingenuity anything is possible. I wonder what the differences are in the lines having never seen them both myself? Those suckers are expensive!

u cant use the rs pump with the wrx ej20, u need the wrx pump, and u need to reuse ur RS pump lines, and have a shop weld the rs line thats supposed to goto the rs pump, be welded to wrx lines that goto the wrx pump
thats what i did they disconnect down under the rack |

So you're saying you need to fab lines, and that you can't use unmodified WRX lines nor RS lines? You have to have the RS portion go to the steering rack, and the WRX portion go to the pump? Hmm, fun.

You can either get USDM WRX PS lines which should hook up to the RS rack and the WRX PS pump obviously. Or do what ImprezaRSFan said, which is for the JDM lines which is have the RS lines put on the end of the JDM WRX/STi PS lines (That's what I did too) You can't use the RS PS pump on a EJ20 because the intake with a stock mount turbo goes under the intake manifold and right where the resivour sits on top of the RS PS pump. I suppose if you had a rotate mount turbo you could potentially use teh RS PS pump... /shrugs -Tim |
