This is a horrible thing to say but say if Ford/whoever else comes out with some sort of a Wrangler-competitor replacement but with more road handling and ride focus, it would spell all sorts of trouble because Jeep would have to water town their formula to keep up with sales. This means designing all new stuff and then sell it for cheaper, just to compete. Think Jeep Compass with soft-top. Shudders.

We all know Wranglers are mostly road going mall crawlers, but people deal with the so-so handling, subpar fuel economy, jarring rides, just because they can have a cool looking drop down beach cruiser. So if you have a competitor that can make such a thing for low 20s, you can pretty much say good-bye to solid axles and part-time 4WD, then say hello to cheap Murano CrossCabriolets...you know what I mean?

They have tried and failed for years. Some to more or less degrees of success.

Suzuki Samurai/Sidekick
Toyota FJ Cruiser

Etc...

The untiliy offroad market belongs to jeep... .why do you think land rover moved on to pure lux models.

The only other long term success has been the unimog line but that doesn't really compare. Jeep need to release thier truck again.

Where they went wrong.

The 4 door wrangler should have been renamed to the Jeep Cherokee.

Same with the Samurai / Sidekick. Those eventually became the XL-7 / Vitara / Grand Vitara. They moved away from the basic 4X4 and became "luxury utes" in the 90's. Sammys and sidekicks (and the Tracker off shoot) are the rig of choice out here due to the tight trails.

Yup... the Wrangler is the only show in town, with no direct competitors. I grew to hate my 2010 jku because it was so underpowered and had such a crappy interior. I could have lived with it if its cost was cheaper. If only Toyota made an Fj with a soft top or Ford did a throwback Bronco.

I will say, the redesigned interior and new engine and transmission made a big difference. While I never really "loved" my 2010 jku, I couldn't be happier with my 2013 jku.

You seem to really know your stuff when it comes to jeeps... I am curious why you feel this way? Do you feel like the longer wheelbase makes that much of a difference, or is it a tradition thing?

But the wrangler outsells all of them in 1 year vs thier lifetime #'rs.

Didnt say any of the other rigs suck.. I love samurai's & FJ's... but they wont knock down the king.

Becuase when they discontinued the cherokee and brought up the liberty platforms, and compass etc.. all those vehicles were pretty much un-modable for offorad usage.. at least no where comparable to what the cherokee was capable of, so they served as poor replacements.

The Cherokee was always a 4 door equivalent to people who wanted a wrangler but wanted cargo capacity and 4 doors, and 4 real seats.

Now when they started making the 4 doors... they just kept the wrangler nameplate and rolled out what the 8 different models of wranglers? X, Sport Rubicon, Sahara, in 2 and 4 door?

With the upcoming release of the watered down mall crawler vomitous mass that will be wearing the Cherokee nameplate.. they have jeepers crying everywhere.

Had they instead named the 4 door wrangler versions in all their different iterations the "Jeep Cherokee" It would have been seen as a massive upgrade in the jeep community over the previos Cherokee.

They would have FINALLY had a solid frame, and a removable top option (which people have wanted FOREVER), while retaining the solid axles, and offroad capability & upgradeability people wanted from the previous Cherokee.

Just like they should give the upcoming variant of the wrangler truck option the Comanchee nameplate like its predecessor.

The wheelbase only matters in certain situations..

Sadly, you missed some other Wrangler trim levels.

Moab
Freedom
Arctic
Islander
Rubicon 10AE

And probably another dozen more I don't remember...it's like the Mustang and the 911.

Right, and people in the know would always call it a 4 door wrangler anyway.

That's everywhere. A very small percentage of the 4door go offroad.
At least here in UT they are usually built up to look capable.

You can thank these type of people for keeping the Wrangler sales so strong and having the Rubicon continue to exist. You think Jeep could truly sell a vehicle strictly for the off-road crowd?

My 98 cherokees parking brake assembly fell off where it was attached to, I tried to find some bolts that would fit reattach it to what seems like a mounting plate but with no dice. Does anyone know if the mounting plate and the parking brake assembly are one piece or are there actual bolts that will fit. It almost seems like it just rusted off the plate. Any help would be great.

The whole parking brake assembly in the picture IE the metal piece holding the rear cables, equalizer and front cable was either bolted or welded to a bracket attached the unibody, it is now sagging because it fell off whatever it was bolted to or welded to. Does that help? My apologies, its slightly hard to explain.

Understood... is the bracket sill in one piece including the tabs?

Are the nuts still present and in good condition in the unibody?

Even a cell phone picture would be helpful.

The bracket is still in one piece but I think the tabs that you are referring to are still attached the unibody.

I dont have any nuts or bolts if thats what holds this thing on, they must have fallen out somewhere, the ebrake still works just dangles around and rubs on the driveshaft.

Here are two pics, sorry if they suck its pouring here.
