SOA Reports July 2022 Sales

Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) today reported 41,536 vehicle sales for July 2022, a 17.1 percent decrease compared with July 2021 (50,125) while Crosstrek had its best July sales ever. The automaker also reported year-to-date sales of 305,331 a 17.8 percent decrease compared with the same period in 2021. Subaru continues to face inventory challenges as the result of microchip and supply chain issues affecting automakers across the globe.

“Customers know they can look to Subaru for the adventure-ready, family-friendly and safe vehicles they can count on, despite low inventory impacting the entire auto industry,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO of Subaru of America, Inc. “We are thankful for customers’ loyalty to our brand, even with supply chain challenges, and know this in large part to our goal of being More Than A Car Company®. We’re proud our retailers deliver impeccable customer service and continue to build relationships with our customers.”

In July, Crosstrek was a top performer by volume, and set a record of its best July ever, with 14,076 sales. The Impreza saw a 215 percent increase compared to July 2021, while the WRX increased by 9.8 percent. Year to date, the Ascent posted a 6 percent increase, while the BRZ carline posted an increase of 162 percent compared to the same period in 2021.

“While we continue to feel the effects of the ongoing supply chain issues, we are focused on delivering the high-quality vehicles Subaru is known for,” said Jeff Walters, Senior Vice President of Sales. “Demand for Subaru vehicles remains high, and we look forward to rolling out our competitively priced, 2023 model year vehicles this fall, including the updated Subaru Ascent, Outback, and Legacy.”

I went back in Subaru's archive to see if I could tell when the VA WRX/STI sales took over the GV/GR sales, and by how much. I couldn't really figure it out with the limited time I have.

I don't think less than 10% increase over a pandemic-riddled year of sales is really anything to brag about, but that's probably just me. Maybe if this car is unchanged in a couple of years and we STILL see a 10% increase YTD, then I'd probably consider that normal. But for a brand new model, it's kinda sad. Again, they'll cite supply chain issues, but I dunno. Lots of factors at play.

Nah, those are great numbers since they are really a quarter not YTD since the VB wasn't introduced until spring of this year. In addition, the VA sales account for the STi which usually sold about 500 units months, VB does not. Good to see the sales picking up and I have no doubt they will continue to do so as the year goes on. It also completely smashed the GTI, plastic cladding and all. Overall, fantastic numbers for the VB! Cheers.

It seems like sales are fairly stable. Notice the 1,400 to 2500 every other month. Possibly more of an issue with RORO deliveries, than actual demand. Not saying it's selling like hotcakes. I still think the cladding is terrible.

Still down 47% on the year. Summer time is always hot for car sales.

Not too many new WRXs and STIs where around last July/August.

It’s like when a team is losing 28-0 and they score a touchdown and celebrate. Look @ the scoreboard

1) Historically July is always a very strong month for car sales
2) I talked to my “friend” bc of how stupid someone’s post was above us and he said 1/4 of those are cars people where waiting for to come in they already had a deposit on who where excited for the car @ release
3) 30-60% dip is where we will end for the year on this car

Wait until it’s November and they’re down 55-60% YTD unless the lease programs keep getting more and more aggressive.

Dealer local to me is advertising $179/MO $4999 down on these cars right now.

Smashed the GTI bc they can’t build enough of them to support demand the Ukraine issue is messing w/ VWs ability to produce cars. Do some research

What does July being strong have anything to do with anything? Every month has been a strong month for sales dependent on availability. There's going to be a dip regardless based on virtually no sales for 25% of the year. Then there's no STI in the sales compared to last year which is another sizable chunk out of every month.

Nah, the sales up and the car wasn't even available all year with the dealers not getting them until late spring and that is with very limited trim/color availability. The auto wasn't even available till summer. Also, you seem to be immune to logic but there is no 2022 STI and 2021 WRX sales INCLUDED the STI. What we have here so far to go by for ALL of US 2022 WRX sales is about 4 months of sales, with more than half of that being limited to 6 speed manuals, specific colors and higher trims. Those are facts and I know they don't align with what your imaginary friend tells you but they are what they are.

Can you (or anyone with links to the data, I can't get them on my phone) do a favor and look up the sales of new model WRXs the July after they were released? Like when the VA replaced the GE/GH. Etc...

Let me know what you find out. Would be curious. I seem to recall it was something like 35%... and comparing that to almost 10%? LOL

Sure, in July 2014 Subaru sold 2,005 WRX and STI models. In July 2015 Subaru sold 3,716 WRX and STI models. In July 2021 Subaru sold 2,305 WRX and STI models. In July 2022 Subaru sold 2,530 WRX models only. Historically on average Subaru sold around 500 VA STI models a month. The overall car sales are down significantly and this is a completely different market than it was back then. Also, the WRX has really only been on sale here in the US for about 4 full months with limited spec availability and the automatic not being available until only about 2 months ago. Furthermore, to put things into perspective so far the VB outsold its closest competitor at a much higher rate than the VA did during the same period.

Which is why percentages matter, not whole numbers. Would you agree that numbers this year are better than last year for the same period?

Also, you may have confused 2015CY with 2015MY (or not gotten the jist of my discussion of old vs new models). The '15MY VA came out in '14, so should be with '14 numbers vs '13 numbers, not '14 vs '15 as it was the same car, and not different platforms. Try re-running them.

So if Subaru stopped making the STI I would assume that would mean more capacity to make more WRX's? And those 500 or so sales a month that would normally go to the STI, shouldn't that mean the WRX should see an even bigger boost in sales because the guy/girl who wanted an STI is likely going to have to settle for a WRX now?

There's no value proposition to make people WANT the new model over the old model like there was between '13 and '14. Sure, numbers are about the same, but that exemplifies stagnation as historically (and you can probably go back) when a new generation model is released, they usually bump about 25-30% from previous segment. Market was the same last and this year, but the new car? Not good enough for people to value a jump in buyers.
