Are you looking for a prime or zoom lens?

Zoom, preferably. I already have a 50mm prime... I'm just looking for a good walkaround lens to use instead of that. I've got my eye on a 70-200 as well, but that's not for a while.

I was thinking this would suit my needs pretty well:

Suppose I'll read up on the reviews.

IMO for walk around/carshow you need less than a 50mm. so a 70-200 would still be inconvenient. look into a good 18-XXX lens or a 20-70ish mm lens. i have my 18-270mm for general car show crap and i use my 35mm when i know people wont be getting in teh way and i can back up from the subject matter.

All I have is a 50 1.8 and the kit 18x55. @ car shows I always use the kit, trying my best to keep it in it's sweet spot between 30-35mm. I would prefer a crisp 18mm or less, but without spending some bucks that's not gonna happen.

There is just not enough room for 50mm+ in most car show scenes, unless you are going for something very specific (gauges, emblems, close-ups etc) something where the 1.8 is really going to make the difference. The only advantage I can see is the 1.8, as indoor car shows tend to not have the best lighting. But that's what iso is for right??

The 70-200 will be for track photos. I frequent events at Lime Rock so it will be for that type of thing. I'm pretty sold on the sigma 17-70.

That's exactly why I bought the 70-200. I also go to Limerock for events. I'm excited for the season to begin!!

The background is better in the first shot than in the second, since we can see cars in the dark behind the main subject. The ground looks wet, but I'd still get lower in elevation so it doesn't quite look like standing eye level.

So far so good though, you're definitely off to a good start! Give this another try during the daytime, since shooting at night is a bit more difficult overall than shooting during the day
Thanks for the helpful advice! I was able to get out and take a few more photos over the last week or so. I can certainly see what you mean about shooting in the daylight! Any help with these would be great! Thanks in advance!

Do you think the angle is too exaggerated in this one? (Sorry about the stupid parking pass on the mirror... I need to remember to remove that next time)

I retried the night shot a little closer to the lights from the opposite direction. Is the white balance any better this time?

Thanks again! Your advice is very much appreciated!

I try to keep it interesting, but not too wild, at least for the moment until I become comfortable with the art. I'll avoid sharing camera phone pics as much as possible, but will give you heads up when a shot is with a camera phone since I just got a Samsung Galaxy SIII and it's kind of fun to use.

I just got a tripod and I'm using a shared Sony Alpha NEX-6. I'm hoping to get a used Nikon D5000 with a Tamron 18-270MM lens. Ultimately, I'm planning on taking a roadtrip with my BRZ from Alaska down to Washington, Oregon, California (for a family reunion), Arizona and Colorado, all in early May through mid May. I'm assuming there will be MANY different photo opportunities with wildly varying backgrounds, so I guess I'm just looking to see what works and doesn't work for taking outdoor shots across the west coast. Right now I'm stuck with Alaska's white-all-over scenery, but I'm trying to make the best of what I've got!

Anyways, here are some recent shots with the Sony Alpha NEX-6, all without tripods:

Here are a few with the SGSIII:

Sony NEX-F3, no tripod:

Right now, Alaska is mostly dark, so I suppose I'll have to get familiar with setting up a tripod and doing longer exposures.

I'll have to look through this thread when I have more time tonight. Thanks in advance!
Welcome! It's usually easier for all of us (especially me) to critique a maximum of 3 photos at a time, but a lot of your shots are pretty similar so I can group things a bit. Your full car shots are decent, but you can work on the composition a bit. Try your best not to take photos from standing eye level, and try to make sure there's no distractions in the background that might grow out of the car or otherwise take the focus away from your subject. Your more close-up shots mostly lack a strong subject. For example, your 2 photos of your roof: what exactly is the subject in those, and what makes that interesting compared to the rest of the scene?

Overall, most of your shots are a little underexposed as well, need a little straightening, and don't really have your car posed for the camera. Instead, it just looks like the car's parked and you just decided to snap a quick photo. More effort into composing the shot and thinking about the photo as a whole will help you go farther, no matter what camera you're using

As was previously mentioned, a kit 18-55mm lens will probably be your best bet for a walk-around zoom lens. I'm not sure about aftermarket options out there for Canons, but if there's a constant ƒ2.8 lens out there around that focal length and price range, it might also be a good option. The 17-40mm ƒ4 is a great lens and will work great as a walk-around lens, but if I remember correctly it's a bit outside of your price range. Either way, for most walk-around stuff you need to use a wider focal length since often you find yourself too close for a normal lens (50mm on full frame, or 35mm on crop sensor).

Just keep in mind that portrait lenses tend to be in 85mm - 135mm range, since they have little/no distortion.

You're welcome! Yeah, on the first photo I"d say the angle is a bit too much. It actually might not be so bad if the car was on the right side of the frame, but because it's on the left side and it's facing left, it looks like the car's on its way to fall out of the frame. Remember, generally you want to have the car look like it's coming into the frame rather than leaving it, since people's eyes tend to follow the perceived path that the car is taking.

The night shot definitely has better white balance, but you've got another problem that often happens with night shots -- uneven lighting. The front of the car in particular is a lot darker than the rest of the car since the main light is to the rear of the driver's side. To fix this, most people either position the car so that more even light hits the car, use their own artificial lighting (strobes or light painting) or get really creative (often too much) with post-processing. Either way though, nothing quite replaces a big ball of fire 93 million miles away, especially in terms of making things look natural.

I couldn't sleep last night, so I did another edit from my little shoot last week. I was going to scrap this one at first, but I was able to get creative with some of the technical bits.

Haha first and more important tip: get someone else to drive while you take photos

Seriously though, to get good rolling shots, you really need to hang out the window. Here's an example of me hanging out the window for a rolling shot:

That's me being safe about it too. Now, I don't condone doing this, but if you really want to get some good shots, you have to hang out the window even more, and often kind of blind fire your shots while holding the camera out and closer to the ground. For example, I was most of the way out of the window on this shot, and the camera was maybe 2 feet off the ground:

The key is of course making sure your settings are where you want them and your polarizer is in the proper place before hanging your camera down lower out the window. Using burst mode and continuous autofocus, you'll end up with a bunch of throw-away shots, but you'll still get a good number of solid, sharp photos in the process as well. I also usually stick with an ultra-wide angle lens for rolling shots, but a regular wide angle will work fine too. As long as the focal length is under 50mm, you should be in good shape to take sharp rolling shots.

Regarding the edit of the last photo (which is taken at a bit too fast of a shutter speed, which is why it looks like the wheels aren't turning), what you're thinking doesn't sound like something that'll be easy to accomplish without Photoshop. Based on what you describe, I envision the car coming out of a dark tunnel, thus the front end is exposed while it gradually becomes dark as it goes toward the rear of the car. I'm not familiar with Aperture though, so I'm not sure if it's capable of doing that or not.

i'm an idiot and posted the same photo twice meant to make the background black on this photo, or if anyone can do it and make the car look meaner.

I forgot who originally gave me the idea, but I did that style of shot once. Parked the car in the garage on a bright day with just the nose sticking out. It was easy enough to add shadow and make everything but the nose of the car black. Not the best shot in the world, but you get the idea...

Ah, gotcha. 3 photos it is. Thanks for the words. I'll definitely take note and keep experimenting. With the roof ones I had no purpose, but totally agree. I'll continue working on exposure and composition. Appreciate it!

I normally do not like doing shop pictures because the lighting sucks and there are far too many distractions given the limited space. But...I do like how this one has the car sitting "in its element" so to speak.
