UP Rattle but no leak / What kind of replacement nut for UP studs?
Two-parter here.
After putting in an uppipe, I'm leak free but I seem to have aquired a rattle. It's noticeable slightly at idle and louder only at sub-1000rpm engine speeds. After that it either goes away or is drowned out. In trying to track it down, I removed the turbo and exhaust manifold heat shields but the rattle is still there. I noticed that one of the uppipe studs is missing a nut on top. It's the one closest to the passenger side/front of the car - it doesn't connect through the turbo, only through a bracket that the turbo heatshield bolts up to. I figure that's the next most-likely candidate for the rattle. Can anyone tell me what kind of nut those use? I can provide a pic if this is confusing. Also, if that's not the issue, are there any other common sources of rattling from an uppipe install that I may not have thought of? Thanks.

I believe it's a M10 1.25, same as the rest of the nuts attaching turbo to UP and DP; you can grab a pack at Advance for a few bucks, Grade 8. They also carry a nice plastic box assortment of metric bolts, nuts & washers, all Grade 8, for twelve bucks or so. That size is in there, as well as a bunch of others you may find yourself needing down the line.
That particular nut connects the upper end of the UP & turbine side of the turbo to a bracket, that connects to the block. Without it, the next hard connection point is about halfway down the DP. It could be the source of your rattle. |

Thanks!
I picked up some M10 x 1.25 nuts, and that box assortment for next time. Nut did the trick, no more rattle. |

Dealership would have been the next stop, but it's labor day weekend and I'm impatient.
I was able to find a replacement at Pep Boys that was flanged like the OEM ones. |
