Default New 2006 WRB WRX Limited wagon owner....

I've been a long time fan, long time member, but never an owner of a Subaru vehicle until now. My wife finally relented and let me buy my car, and not one that she has to approve of (save for being 4 doors). After going through a 2002 325Ci, 2003 350z, 2002 Audi S4, and 2005 Infiniti FX35, I have finally found myself in a Subaru.

I was also looking at the Mazdaspeed3, which is a very nice ride. For the same price that I paid for the Limited ($24k), I could have gotten a car with a few more amenities. However, they were unwilling to budge even $100 from MSRP and I am unwilling to pay MSRP for anything.

In the end I picked up the WRB Limited Wagon and love it. I do not plan on doing an mods in the short term, as I have a project car that is eating all my hobbie money: 1972 240z. Plans for this car include an L28ET swap (old engine is pulled tomorrow) with a T03/04E hybrid turbo, 440cc injectors, Megasquirt, etc., etc. The mods on the little wagon will have to wait a few years.

See you on the road.

I'm actually in the market for a similar vehicle. How much did you end up paying?

I paid $24,250 pre-tax, title and tag at Irvine Subaru. It was an '06 model and they were trying to move them off their lot. Invoice on the car was mid-$25k if I remember correctly. The car came with homelink/autodimming mirror and a trunk mat.

It's a nice car; the Mazdaspeed3 is slightly nicer inside, but you give up the moonroof, all leather seats, and the heated seats. Also, the WRX wagon trunk is larger.

The MS3 has a great exhaust note, good looks, a nice powerband, but the shifter was incredibly vague and the neutral position for the transmission aligned you with 3rd gear. I kept stalling during my test drive because I kept putting it into 3rd. Also, the throttle is incredibly sensitive and the clutch feather light. I could not shift smooth for the life of me. In the end I know I got the right car for me.

Ooohh... I LOVE those Z cars. I test drove an '03 Z, and if I could identify an ounce of practicality in it, I think that would have been my choice. It was such an experience driving that car. I like the 240Z's... it was before they started becoming more heavy-ish, touring-oriented cars.

Thanks all for the compliments and the Scoobie owner's welcome.

I pulled the engine today in preparation of the build. Earlier this week I dismantled the engine while it was in the car: exhaust and intake manifolds, carbs, radiator, fan, electrical harness, etc. Actually pulling the engine today took 10 minutes. Going to strip the engine bay down and repaint with POR-15, then spray with a satin black before the new engine goes in.

I know what I said about not modding, but I have already been reading about exhausts and Accessport.

There used to be a thing with the 240 motors. I think it was a kawasaki 750 piston and rods, nissan diesel crank, and a few tricks.
Being an old fart I had a friend that did this to a 240 that would extend the front suspension on launch and roast the tires till it hooked up.

L28 block bored out to 89mm, L24 9mm bolt rods, N42 head, 1mm gasket and a Maxima diesel crank - net displacement is 3.1L. Add a set of triple Mikuni carbs and you producing upwards of 250whp.

While that may not seem like a lot in todays standards, the car only weighs 2300 lbs.

Congrats on the Subie.
As for the 240, one of the friends has an old z car like yours and has had it since it was new or near new and back then putting a twin turbo on it would make on e of thos things fly. Looks good keep up the work.
